I’m very happy with my laser treatment. There’s nothing to worry about – there’s no pain, and I would recommend it to anybody. The aftercare at Optical Express is also very good. I just wish i had done it years ago. – Philip Lavelle
Optical Express uses world leading technology, and their laser platform – the VISX S4IR – delivers safe, accurate and precise results. Fun fact: Optical Express is the only vision correction provider to invest in the iFS150 intraLASE in each of its clinics – the same technology that led to NASA backing laser eye surgery for astronauts in 2007.
Over 99% of Optical Express patients achieved 20/20 vision or better following treatment, according to a study carried out in June 2017.
With over 25 years’ experience in eye care, Optical Express boasts excellent surgical outcomes, and has invested £400 million in technology to offer advanced methods for vision correction.
Optical Express has 128 clinics in the UK alone – far more than any other eye surgery provider. Its locations include London, Liverpool, Manchester, Leeds, Glasgow, Edinburgh, and Dublin, with many more situated in all corners of the country.

Laser Eye Surgery
Laser eye surgery is a simple procedure that can correct your vision in a matter of minutes. Optical Express offers the most popular types: LASIK and LASEK (if you are not suitable for the surgical LASIK).
In both treatments, a cool beam advanced laser reshapes the cornea (the surface of your eye). Optical Express uses a technology called iDesign, which is based on Wavefront technology and takes thousands of eye measurements to produce the best results.
Lens Replacement
Optical Express has 20 years’ experience in lens replacement surgery. This surgery is a popular treatment for people with long distance vision, short distance vision, and even cataracts.
An eye consultant can help you decide which surgery best suits your needs:
- Refractive lens exchange (RLE) – This surgery replaces the natural lens with a synthetic intraocular lens (IOL) implant.
- Phakic IOL – This type of IOL is an alternative to laser eye surgery for patients with strong prescriptions.
- YAG laser treatment – YAG laser capsulotomy is a non-invasive procedure used to treat refractive former lens exchange patients whose vision starts to fade over the years.
Cataract Surgery
Optical Express performs the highest number of cataract surgeries – after the NHS, according to its website.
Cataracts are small, blurry patches on your eyes, giving you cloudy vision. Cataract surgery involves removing your damaged lens, and replacing it with a premium synthetic one for sharper near and distance vision.
Aftercare
Optical Express custom-fits its aftercare plan to every patient. This plan includes any medication that will aid the healing process, optometrist-led follow-up appointments, and an out-of-hours medical helpline.
Patients receive 12 months’ continued care as standard, and Optical Express recommends annual examinations to maintain your eye health.
Safety Record
All surgical procedures carry a degree of risk. However, laser eye surgery has an impressive success rate, and is the most popular elective surgery in the world.
99.2% of patients achieved at least 20|20 vision following surgery at Optical Express, based on a study of 190,231 Optical Express patients with the most common prescriptions. That’s why this eye clinic promises 20|20 vision or your money back.
Just be aware that the risks increase the more complicated the surgery. Optical Express will provide a screening service to check whether you are suitable for surgical treatment.
4. The Verdict

I have had wavefront lasik treatment in Oxford three weeks ago, just required on one eye. The whole experience was very professional and reassuring from the free initial consultation, the surgery itself with Mrs Joanna McGraw, and the post-op aftercare with Chris Gasgoigne. They found microscopic bleeding on the first post-op appointment and just increased the drops, then back on recovery schedule. I also had some shady blurs at the outer edge of my vision for the first week, but these have dissappeared within a week or so and I am very happy with 20/20 in both eyes.

I had the surgery on the 13 December 2006 and I am here today for my one month check-up. I have been told that my eye sight is above the required driving standards so my eyes are nearly perfect and it is all thanks to Mr Osama Giladi (the surgeon) who has done a wonderful job!! I would recommend anyone who wears glasses or contact lenses to have this painless procedure done as it is the best money I have spent in a long time. The staff at the clinic are very helpful and put your mind at rest with any queries you may have, so what are you waiting for make your appointment today and get rid of your glasses.

had a consultation last week in Torquay all went well just had a bit of a shock when the cost doubled but had been forewarned on this web site that it often happens. Have been booked into Bristol on may 2nd so will let you know how it goes.

I had Lasik on both eyes in August 2006..Although very pleased with the overall result, i still have a little perscription in my right eye. This is a little irritating when reading or watching TV, though my overall sight it comfortable. I have been told i can have an enhancement in my right eye, but i am undecided. Can any one who may have had an enhancement, please drop me a line..Good or bad. Many thanks

I had wavefront lasik with intralase on 30th March at Optical Express in Glasgow city centre. My surgeon was absolutely fantastic, she reassured me throughout the procedure, which was uncomfortable but not painful. I noticed an improvement in my vision straight away, and the next day was even better, however, 11 days later the vision in my right eye is still quite blurred, and nowhere near the vision I have in my left eye. When I went to my check up last Saturday they said it was because my eyes were still healing, but I am worried I'll need an enhancement. My pre- surgery prescription was -7 in my left eye and -9 in my right. I just wondered if there is anyone else out there who has had lasik with such a high prescription, and if so, how long did it take for your vision to settle? I would really appreciate any replies.

Date of operation: 5/1/2007 Branch: Glasgow Surgeon: Mr David Teenan Treatment: Wavefront Intralase - Lasik (both eyes) Hello folks. My name's Greg and I'm 21 years old. I had my laser eye surgery just over 3 months ago as I am intending on enlisting in the British Army, though felt glasses would be a hindrance for my (hopefully) future career (My prescription was quite moderate). Currently I experience halos at night, slight astigmatism in my left eye and at times dry eyes (a side effect that's admittedly exacerbated by my working conditions, though I don't really consider it bothersome). My eye sight though is very functional and near perfect minor complications aside. Glasgow clinic, staff were / are very friendly, chatty (especially "Greta from South Dakota", excellent councilor!) and professional, all staff I encountered, great personal skills. The surgeon himself Mr David Teenan very patient, professional and direct with you. Surgery itself, usual notes of interest; slight burning smell detected when laser used, brief pressure in eye when tube attached, slight discomfort when clamps applied (my long eye lashes really are a pain in the backside, especially with that air puff test and administering drops!) Absolutely no pain felt during surgery. When the anesthetic wears off you really want to find yourself in a dark room attempting to grab a couple of hours sleep as your eyes are that light sensitive. I read through the other recent Glasgow comments and would echo the sentiments regarding the long waiting times / "conveyor belt" feeling. The place REALLY is busy and regardless of the money spent (mine most likely being the highest) it's very surreal seeing the volume of people entering and leaving the waiting lounge / treatment room. Aftercare treatment I'm pleased with also - I'm receiving additional aftercare appointments to monitor any changes in the astigmatism in my left eye and am satisfied that my eyes will fully settle as time goes. I'll need to pass a VERY thorough eye examination by an Army Ophthalmologist (unfortunately Britain has yet to catch up with the USA who are very pro-laser eye surgery in their armed forces) so if I find myself somewhere hot, arid and sandy in 1-2 years time then you'll know that an eye specialist independent of Optical Express has deemed my new eyes satisfactory. I'll update come that time. So to conclude, big thumbs up for the Glasgow Clinic. Any questions, feel free to e-mail. Cheers,
Clare
I had my wavefront lasik treatment just over a week ago at optical express newcastle. The staff were all really friendly and professional which helped me feel at ease as i was a bit nervous. I had various checks before I went in for my actual treatment. I was quite surprised that I didn't have to be kept waiting. The surgeon said I would hear a buzzing noise when they cut my cornea but i didn't realize how loud it would be and I flinched. Luckily it didn't affect my eye! There was no pain at all during treatment but the smell of burning was a bit off putting! 1/2hr after treatment I was in a restaurant accross the road from optical express with my sunglasses on and my eyes were stinging quite badly and tears were streaming down my face,I just wanted to get home. Once at home I went to sleep as adviced and the next morning I felt alot better in my right eye but my left was still sore. At my check up I could see ok in my right eye but I had double vision in my left. I kept taking all my different drops and my left eye started to feel better. a week on I have better that 20/20 vision. It's amazing I don't know why everyone doesn't have it done. All those years I wore my horrid glasses and uncomfortable contact lenses!

Lasik with Wavefront Sugery @ Bristol Surgeon: Mrs Joanna McGraw Date of Surgery: 23/03/07 Pre Op Prescription: -3.50 both eyes. Had surgery on Friday 23rd at about 3:15pm, total time in surgery was about 15 minutes, it was a little nerve wracking and I felt a bit claustrophobic with all the equipment around me but the surgery itself was totally painless, some pressure was felt but this was not painful at all, after surgery my eyesight was still a bit blurry but after time went on it improved minute by minute. I had no discomfort in either eye or the streaming which can happen, my eyes weren't even red. The post op check up the day after concluded that I can now read the bottom line of an eye chart (before I couldn't even read the top letter... lol). It's now day day three and the drops I have been given are going in religiously and the comfort drops help a bit with the dry eye, but it is not really that annoying. Each day is like a little miracle and it seems weird to be able to see everything but have no contacts in, I notice things now which I had never noticed before and take everything in.... my eyes tire about mid afternoon but hopefully that will get better as time goes on as it is still early days....

PLEASE BE WARNED IF YOU SUFFER FROM DRY EYES. Optical Express - BLUEWATER. Had a complete disaster. My friend previously had surgery here. She was happy with surgery but didn't think customer service was up to scratch but I decided to give it a go. From first impressions, customer service was pretty awful. Staff were like robots, just reading a script. No personal service whatsoever. Next I met the optometrist. Now I'm aware I suffer from quite severe dry eyes and have done so for years. I wanted to be sure the surgery would be suitable for me. I made sure I asked about the dry eyes part but just literally got, "it'll be fine". I wasn't happy with the brief response so prodded a bit more and was just told that as I already had dry eyes, I'd have them still after, which wasn't of course a huge revelation to me. So I asked one last thing, if the dry eyes would get worse, she said no, it'd be fine. So surgery was booked for February this year, payment made. First disappointment, surgery cancelled due to surgeon falling ill which is fair enough. Surgery was rearranged. I went to meet the surgeon, Mr Wayne Crewe-Brown, just before the surgery. This was like an hour before. The first thing I said to him was about my dry eyes concern. The man was shocked that I was sitting actually there and had got that far. I found out then that dry eyes is a common side effect of laser eye surgery which I was NEVER told. You would've thought that would've been pretty important info for me. Then the surgeon went onto explain "what if", worse case scenario which I was horrified to hear. I can't believe none of this info was presented to me til an HOUR before surgery. It was clearly a mutual agreement that Mr Wayne Crewe-Brown & myself thought that it just wasn't worth the risk for me to go ahead as I was in a vulnerable category and had I known all this info before, I would never have gone ahead. So I left hugely upset and disappointed. I'd like to stress at this point that I couldn't fault Mr Wayne Crewe-Brown. He was completely honest and frank with me and offered me his professional opinion, which I truly value as I know he is a man with experience in the field. He was great. So that was it basically. Just to rub more salt into the wounds, I made an official complaint to their Head Office immediately after in February. I was told I’d get a full response within 10 days. It is now nearly 2 months later and still nothing. I am SO disgusted with the whole service, it’s so unprofessional. I just want to say, especially if you suffer from dry eyes or have any other major pre-surgery concerns, don’t take it for granted they’ll give you all the information you’ll need. I actually prompted the woman to get more info but still got nothing. I’ve learnt at the end of the day, you get what you pay for. Also if it matters to you that you get people that help you feel at ease about your surgery and treat you as an individual, this is not the place. Had I also known beforehand that respectable places like Moorfields Eye Hospital carry out laser eye surgery, I would’ve gone to them. If Optical Express can EVER be bothered to respond to my complaint, I will post back here, but don’t hold your breath. Overall - the WORST customer experience of my life and even more so disturbing that these people seem to forget that these were my EYES they were dealing with and they didn't seem to care less that they could’ve risked damaging my eyes / vision indefinitely. ABSOLUTELY DISGUSTED.

I had Lasik with wavefront and Intralase just over two weeks ago. Actual operation wasn't pleasant but was over so quickly you don't really have time to fret. Very efficiently executed. The first week post op was pretty nasty for me. couldn't really do much. Second week better and I am now into my third week. Each day my eyes feel more comfortable although I can relate to the comments about headaches - like a pulling sensation when you get a brand new prescription in your glasses. As far as vision is concerned I was around -8.00 and was told that I might be left with a small prescription and although this doesn't settle down for a month after the op I reckon I will be left with around -1.5 or close to that. 20/20 is what I have now - which isn't as good as with glasses which give much better than 20/20 it seems. Overall a good move
