1. Optical Express Laser Eye Surgery Review

I’m very happy with my laser treatment. There’s nothing to worry about – there’s no pain, and I would recommend it to anybody. The aftercare at Optical Express is also very good. I just wish i had done it years ago. – Philip Lavelle

Optical Express uses world leading technology, and their laser platform – the VISX S4IR – delivers safe, accurate and precise results. Fun fact: Optical Express is the only vision correction provider to invest in the iFS150 intraLASE in each of its clinics – the same technology that led to NASA backing laser eye surgery for astronauts in 2007.

Over 99% of Optical Express patients achieved 20/20 vision or better following treatment, according to a study carried out in June 2017.

With over 25 years’ experience in eye care, Optical Express boasts excellent surgical outcomes, and has invested £400 million in technology to offer advanced methods for vision correction.

Optical Express has 128 clinics in the UK alone – far more than any other eye surgery provider. Its locations include London, Liverpool, Manchester, Leeds, Glasgow, Edinburgh, and Dublin, with many more situated in all corners of the country.

Laser Eye Surgery

Laser eye surgery is a simple procedure that can correct your vision in a matter of minutes. Optical Express offers the most popular types: LASIK and LASEK (if you are not suitable for the surgical LASIK).

In both treatments, a cool beam advanced laser reshapes the cornea (the surface of your eye). Optical Express uses a technology called iDesign, which is based on Wavefront technology and takes thousands of eye measurements to produce the best results.

Lens Replacement

Optical Express has 20 years’ experience in lens replacement surgery. This surgery is a popular treatment for people with long distance vision, short distance vision, and even cataracts.

An eye consultant can help you decide which surgery best suits your needs:

  • Refractive lens exchange (RLE) – This surgery replaces the natural lens with a synthetic intraocular lens (IOL) implant.
  • Phakic IOL – This type of IOL is an alternative to laser eye surgery for patients with strong prescriptions.
  • YAG laser treatment – YAG laser capsulotomy is a non-invasive procedure used to treat refractive former lens exchange patients whose vision starts to fade over the years.

Cataract Surgery

Optical Express performs the highest number of cataract surgeries – after the NHS, according to its website.

Cataracts are small, blurry patches on your eyes, giving you cloudy vision. Cataract surgery involves removing your damaged lens, and replacing it with a premium synthetic one for sharper near and distance vision.

Aftercare

Optical Express custom-fits its aftercare plan to every patient. This plan includes any medication that will aid the healing process, optometrist-led follow-up appointments, and an out-of-hours medical helpline.

Patients receive 12 months’ continued care as standard, and Optical Express recommends annual examinations to maintain your eye health.

Safety Record

All surgical procedures carry a degree of risk. However, laser eye surgery has an impressive success rate, and is the most popular elective surgery in the world.

99.2% of patients achieved at least 20|20 vision following surgery at Optical Express, based on a study of 190,231 Optical Express patients with the most common prescriptions. That’s why this eye clinic promises 20|20 vision or your money back.

Just be aware that the risks increase the more complicated the surgery. Optical Express will provide a screening service to check whether you are suitable for surgical treatment.

I had Wavefront Lasik. My treatment from intial consultation 7 months ago till signed off yesterday was fantastic. Everything was explained in detail and I was given ample opportunity to ask questions before progressing to the next stage of treatment. My only regret? The money I've wasted in the 10 years on disposable lenses and glasses. I did feel a little disconfort during surgery but it wasn't painful. The goggles at night weren't the most attractive - think a giant fly - but would recommend everyone to do this.

The consultation was very thorough and extremely professional and all my questions were answered honestly and in a friendly manner. I was very nervous before my treatment but the nurse accompanied me throughout the entire process and was extremely helpful and put me at ease. The aftercare service instills confidence in the treatment that you have had done and the predicted 1-2 days recovery time was spot on! Although the treatment itself can be quite unnerving, the results are amazing!

I had my surgery at the Bluewater clinic on 22/03/07. Wow!!!! I still can't quite get over the fact that I can see - after 17 years of wearing glasses full time, now I don't need them! My eyesight is still a bit blurry in the distance, but this will sort itself out in time, and driving, using the computer, watching TV, reading and so on are no problem at all. I was very nervous when I first went to the clinic on the day of my procedure, but the team were so friendly and Mr Crewe-Brown, the surgeon, was so reassuring, that I soon got over my apprehension. The actual laser surgery literally takes minutes, and wasn't painful at all. The most uncomfortable part (and even that wasn't too bad) was the creating of the flap. The weirdest bit was when the flap was lowered again, and, because your eyes are kept open (obviously), you can see it being replaced! Very odd experience! After care has been wonderful as well, with a lovely lady called Manjeet looking after my post-op checks. I now have 20/20 vision at the legal distance for driving, and it is getting better every day! I'm looking forward to going swimming for the first time and being able to see - and getting my hair cut and being able to see the actual cutting - and wearing normal sunglasses in the summer - and so much more that I couldn't do before. Laser eye surgery is the best invention in the world!

Lasik with Wavefront Sugery @ Bristol Surgeon: Mrs Joanna McGraw Date of Surgery: 23/03/07 Pre Op Prescription: -3.50 both eyes. Had surgery on Friday 23rd at about 3:15pm, total time in surgery was about 15 minutes, it was a little nerve wracking and I felt a bit claustrophobic with all the equipment around me but the surgery itself was totally painless, some pressure was felt but this was not painful at all, after surgery my eyesight was still a bit blurry but after time went on it improved minute by minute. I had no discomfort in either eye or the streaming which can happen, my eyes weren't even red. The post op check up the day after concluded that I can now read the bottom line of an eye chart (before I couldn't even read the top letter... lol). It's now day day three and the drops I have been given are going in religiously and the comfort drops help a bit with the dry eye, but it is not really that annoying. Each day is like a little miracle and it seems weird to be able to see everything but have no contacts in, I notice things now which I had never noticed before and take everything in.... my eyes tire about mid afternoon but hopefully that will get better as time goes on as it is still early days....

I had the surgery on the 13 December 2006 and I am here today for my one month check-up. I have been told that my eye sight is above the required driving standards so my eyes are nearly perfect and it is all thanks to Mr Osama Giladi (the surgeon) who has done a wonderful job!! I would recommend anyone who wears glasses or contact lenses to have this painless procedure done as it is the best money I have spent in a long time. The staff at the clinic are very helpful and put your mind at rest with any queries you may have, so what are you waiting for make your appointment today and get rid of your glasses.

Due to an incorrect eye test from my own optician my laser surgery was delayed and monthly eye tests carried out by Optical Express to obtain a stable presciption. this gave me confidence that the surgeon had my intrests at heart and would not perform surgery until he was fully satisfied that i was a suitable candidate. Had the surgery yesterday. excellant treatment from all staff, surgeon spent time with me before and after explaining everything. Slight discomfort during procedure - nothing to worry about. walked out and could see everythign clearly without glasses for the first time in years. reading perfect. would reccommend to anyone

21 Apr 2007

The best thing i have ever decided to do- I would recommend laser eye surgery to anyone who is fed up of wearing glasses. My eyes were -6.50 and -7.25 (very bad) and the day after surgery i woke up and could see well enough to drive AMAZING! The procedure was slightly uncomfortable but didn't hurt and only took 10-15 minutes. After the surgery my eyes didn't hurt at all. Thankyou to all the staff at Meadowhall Sheffield and Nottingham you have been great!!

I have had wavefront lasik treatment in Oxford three weeks ago, just required on one eye. The whole experience was very professional and reassuring from the free initial consultation, the surgery itself with Mrs Joanna McGraw, and the post-op aftercare with Chris Gasgoigne. They found microscopic bleeding on the first post-op appointment and just increased the drops, then back on recovery schedule. I also had some shady blurs at the outer edge of my vision for the first week, but these have dissappeared within a week or so and I am very happy with 20/20 in both eyes.

17 Apr 2007

I had Lasik on both eyes in August 2006..Although very pleased with the overall result, i still have a little perscription in my right eye. This is a little irritating when reading or watching TV, though my overall sight it comfortable. I have been told i can have an enhancement in my right eye, but i am undecided. Can any one who may have had an enhancement, please drop me a line..Good or bad. Many thanks

21 Apr 2007

I should have done this years ago!!! It is the day after the operation and my vision is already better now than 15 years ago / Pre-contacts. Dr Blomenfeld was very professional, as was his whole team. The operation was less uncomfortable than my last visit to the dentist.
