I’m very happy with my laser treatment. There’s nothing to worry about – there’s no pain, and I would recommend it to anybody. The aftercare at Optical Express is also very good. I just wish i had done it years ago. – Philip Lavelle
Optical Express uses world leading technology, and their laser platform – the VISX S4IR – delivers safe, accurate and precise results. Fun fact: Optical Express is the only vision correction provider to invest in the iFS150 intraLASE in each of its clinics – the same technology that led to NASA backing laser eye surgery for astronauts in 2007.
Over 99% of Optical Express patients achieved 20/20 vision or better following treatment, according to a study carried out in June 2017.
With over 25 years’ experience in eye care, Optical Express boasts excellent surgical outcomes, and has invested £400 million in technology to offer advanced methods for vision correction.
Optical Express has 128 clinics in the UK alone – far more than any other eye surgery provider. Its locations include London, Liverpool, Manchester, Leeds, Glasgow, Edinburgh, and Dublin, with many more situated in all corners of the country.

Laser Eye Surgery
Laser eye surgery is a simple procedure that can correct your vision in a matter of minutes. Optical Express offers the most popular types: LASIK and LASEK (if you are not suitable for the surgical LASIK).
In both treatments, a cool beam advanced laser reshapes the cornea (the surface of your eye). Optical Express uses a technology called iDesign, which is based on Wavefront technology and takes thousands of eye measurements to produce the best results.
Lens Replacement
Optical Express has 20 years’ experience in lens replacement surgery. This surgery is a popular treatment for people with long distance vision, short distance vision, and even cataracts.
An eye consultant can help you decide which surgery best suits your needs:
- Refractive lens exchange (RLE) – This surgery replaces the natural lens with a synthetic intraocular lens (IOL) implant.
- Phakic IOL – This type of IOL is an alternative to laser eye surgery for patients with strong prescriptions.
- YAG laser treatment – YAG laser capsulotomy is a non-invasive procedure used to treat refractive former lens exchange patients whose vision starts to fade over the years.
Cataract Surgery
Optical Express performs the highest number of cataract surgeries – after the NHS, according to its website.
Cataracts are small, blurry patches on your eyes, giving you cloudy vision. Cataract surgery involves removing your damaged lens, and replacing it with a premium synthetic one for sharper near and distance vision.
Aftercare
Optical Express custom-fits its aftercare plan to every patient. This plan includes any medication that will aid the healing process, optometrist-led follow-up appointments, and an out-of-hours medical helpline.
Patients receive 12 months’ continued care as standard, and Optical Express recommends annual examinations to maintain your eye health.
Safety Record
All surgical procedures carry a degree of risk. However, laser eye surgery has an impressive success rate, and is the most popular elective surgery in the world.
99.2% of patients achieved at least 20|20 vision following surgery at Optical Express, based on a study of 190,231 Optical Express patients with the most common prescriptions. That’s why this eye clinic promises 20|20 vision or your money back.
Just be aware that the risks increase the more complicated the surgery. Optical Express will provide a screening service to check whether you are suitable for surgical treatment.
4. The Verdict

After thinking about this for a year I cannot believe how easy it was when I eventually went into Opticall Express in East Kilbride who arranged treatment at Renfield Street in Glasgow. The staff were all helpful and friendly and put you at your ease at all times. Am really enjoying being able to see normally again and after one month have better than 20/20 vision. Would recommend this to all.

The results of my surgery have been incredible! On the day of the surgery I was initially a little nervous but as soon as I met with my surgeon, he and the nurses put me totally at ease. The procedure itself was not at all painful and it was over so quickly, I could see straight away - it was amazing! My first post op appointment the following day confirmed I already had better than 20/20 vision and I've not experienced any pain or discomfort. Everything looks so much brighter and clearer - I've not stopped smiling! This is the best thing I have ever done and I've not stopped talking about it! A huge thank you to all the staff at Optical Express for my new eyes!

Totally life-changing. Everyone at all the clinics were super-friendly and reassuring. Treatment a bit nerve-wrecking but everyone goes out of their way to put you at ease. Wonderful experience. My vision is now better than 20:20 and I am absolutely delighted with everything.

I've had worse hairdresser appointments than laser surgery, honestly it was the most bizarre experiance ever, I felt nothing during the surgery and afterwards just 2 hours worth of irritiation like an eyelash was caught in my eye and after the 2 hours i had the best vision of my life!!!! Colours look different to me now they are so much brighter, and i can put my make up on properly and not look like a drag queen !!! I recommend this to absolutly anyone, don't be put off by anything it's fantastic !!!!!!!

Excellent service received at Optical Express in both St Albans and Cambridge where I had the treatment. The staff at Cambridge on the day of my op were really nice and very welcoming. The surgeon Stephan Klopper was excellent. The actual procedure was abit uncomfortable but considering I was in the theatre room for less than 15 mins it's over in no time. After the op and the anesethetic had worn off it was quite painful but after 3 hours sleep and some strong pain killers I felt alot better and the pain had gone. The next day I had my follow up appointment at St Albans where they confirmed my vision was now better than 20/20. Previously I had been -1.50 and -1.75 short sighted. I would recommend Optical Express to anyone considering treatment. The price I paid was half that quoted by both Ultralase and Optimax.

My surgery was carried out at Optical Express - Dundee - (Laser Consultation & Surgery Clinic) 96 High Street Dundee DD1 1SD The surgeon who completed my operation was Susanna Boytha both she and her team looked after me extremely well putting me at ease from the start. I would also like to thank the staff at the Dundee High street branch for all their help. My operation has been a complete success and the after care has been excellent. I would recommend this procedure to anyone who may be considering it,

My surgeon was Stefan Klopper who was excellent. I had initial problems with excessive inflammation which required a "flap lift" operation 2 days after the operation which was a bit unsettling. Apparently this was unusual and due to a strong immune system. I had the all clear from the inflammation 10 days after the operation, but the only continuing problem was quite bad light sensitivity for around 6 weeks which made driving to work (20 miles each way) very trying. I have a desk job but if I had to rely on driving for a living then this could have been quite a problem. The light sensitivity cleared up after one of the Optical Express staff (Trveor Pillay) suggested that I use the PRED40 (eye drops) once a day for a week and after that the sensitivity really settled down. After 2 months I had no sensitivity issues at all. I am 50 years old and had quite bad short sightedness, i.e. around minus 6.00 and I needed varifocals to read (old age!). The varifocals were one of the reasons why I had the operation. Now, my eyesight is 6/4 which is excellent (better than the old 20/20). My left eye is the best for distance vision. My right eye is minus 0.25 (very slight shortsightedness) but the unexpected bonus is that because of this I can read without glasses unless the light is very poor and the letters very small. It seems therefore as if I now have the best of both worlds. If I do need help with reading I use "readers" from Boots. Even though I read all day as part of my job, I rarely need to use them. The staff and support at Optical Express are excellent in my experience. If there has been a problem they have dealt with it promptly and have always been available on the phone to discuss any concerns. The treatment isn't cheap but then £600 for new glasses every 2 years isn't cheap either! Mike

I had my initial consultation back in December, knowing that my prescription was very likely to be too high for laser surgery (I was about minus 10.5 in both eyes). I attended the Harley Street clinic in London, and was seen promptly by one of the counsellors, Tanya. (Tanyas great, whenever I called to enquire, she'd recognise my voice and seemed to genuinely care about my concerns). She put me through loads of tests, explaining each one thoroughly and putting my mind at ease. As expected, I wasn't suitable for laser treatment, but I could be considered for Lens implants. I then spoke to an Ophthalmologist, who confirmed that I was suitable for Phakic lens implants. He was great to the point that, he even pointed out a few things about my eyes that would need to be treated - recommending better contacts for my eyes if I didn't chose to go ahead with surgery etc. I decided to go ahead with the treatment and booked in for the 7th January. I had a pre-surgery consultation with the surgeon, who went into further detail and did a few more tests - I was really concerned at one point when the surgeon wanted more tests done, as she wasn't happy with one aspect of my left eye. but after repeat tests, she was happy - she was just checking, which I actually found reassuring. In relation to the srgery itself - your eye is basically paralysed - no pain, no movement, very limited vision. doubled with the sedative, its a breeze. 10 minutes on a table, eye patch on and away you go! After the first eye, I cant deny, it was quite painful. I seemed to have a lot of pressure in my eye, and like it was full of glass. I took pain killers, went to sleep and woke up 5 hours later to put eye drops in and hey presto, i could see and the pain had gone! The second eye was much the same, only this time, no pain at all. I went for my follow up appointment with the surgeon the day after the second eye was treated. I had my eye looked at, the lens was perfectly in place and more importantly...I had better than 20/20 vision! 20/10! Daily, my vision improves. Minor niggles I have disappear, and i wake up with clear vision, go to bed with clear vision, sit in a hot heated room without dry eyes, and no longer worry about losing a lens! i would defo recommend Optical Express!

From someone who has worn glasses for more than 40 years, this has made a real difference to quality of my eyesight since treatment was carried out. I would like to thank the all the staff at the Kirkcaldy Branch of Optical Express from the beginning to see if I would be suitable to the after-care treatment received was just wonderful, as was the treatment in Edinburgh, as all the staff members that I came into contact with where very helpful and reassuring to know that I was in capable hands and there was no pressure put upon me at any time to decide what was the best way forward for me. Thanks for the new lease of life. Kind Regards to all Ronnie

I have had poor vision all my life & have worn glasses for 43 years, not any more & never again thanks to the wavefront treatment I had at Optical Express. I went to the store in Bolton and I could not have received better treatment anywhere. The staff were extremely professional & proficient throughout & went out of their way to show care & consideration both to me & for me every step of the way. [In fact I could not have been better treated if I had been their own mum.] Everything was fully explained every step of the way and nothing was too much trouble. As for the treatment itself, when they say you won't feel anything it's true , it is completely painless and takes literally seconds to complete. I went home & to bed to rest for a couple of hours, & was astounded when I woke & realised I could see clearly without my glasses. It felt like I was day dreaming until I looked in a mirror & on top of that my eyes looked perfectly normal i.e. no redness or inflammation of any kind. I am now nearly two weeks into the new me , my eyes are wonderful, my sight is better than twenty twenty & I read everything everywhere because I can. If I said thank you to the staff at Optical Express Bolton everyday for the rest of my life it would not come any where near to expressing my heartfelt gratitude for the gift that they have given me in my sight. Thank-you
