I had surgery carried out in April 2008 on both eyes by Optical Express in Inverness. Following surgery my right eye cornea displaced, so I contacted Optical Express and arranged an appointment. My plane was delayed and I was told I could not be seen, and would need to make another appointment. By the time I was seen for corrective treatment my cornea had been displaced for a week. Following this I was experiencing severe ghosting in my right eye. I reported this in August 2008 and an Optical Express optometrist recommended me for surgeon review for an enhancement procedure in my left eye. The surgeon review declared there was nothing to treat in either eye. In frustration I turned to the NHS as my sight was so bad I was unable to work. On proof of NHS referral, Optical Express agreed to re-scan my eyes in March 2009. This scan confirmed that I was suffering with high order aberrations which was very pronounced in my right eye, but that my eyes were too dry to operate. I had been left without lubricating drops since August 2008 as there were none in stock and staff failed to provide any as agreed despite many reminders. Over the next few months members of staff failed to organise an operation date for me, again, despite reminders. I finally wrote to the Chief Executive to express my lack of confidence and requested that Optical Express pay for my treatment at the Centre for Sight. This was finally agreed and the Centre for Sight have now operated on both my eyes with the utmost care and excellence (see my review). Over two years later my eyes are now OK and I have finally been discharged. In conclusion whilst my eyes are now good, thanks to the Centre for Sight, the appalling "after care" provided by Optical Express comprised delays in treating a displaced cornea; a continued failure to provide eye-drops; failure to diagnose & several conflicting diagnoses of problems; & a failure to organise operation dates. I would strongly not recommend their services.

Almost two years has now passed since my procedure. I can honestly say that my sight is excellent, no halo's, blurring or lack of focus. The last check up showed my eyes were better than 20/20. This is pretty amazing seeing that my eyesight was very, very poor and I also carried a pretty bad astigmatism. For those of you who are contemplating using optical Express my experience was very positive. The nerves were handled very well by the staff and the procedure for both eyes was over in less that 20 minutes. No pain but slightly uncomfortable after. the drops helped a great deal. Its a bit like peeling a load of onions one after another. Your eyes cant stop streaming. Nothing to worry about just a little annoying. Optical Express - Southampton Had to wait about an hour for the consultation - even someone who turned up nearly two hours late for their appointment was seen first! It was a real conveyor-belt system with one person doing tests and another doing the consultation and back to the first for post-consultation stuff...of course you had to wait each time before being seen. The whole process is an excuse for a two-hour hard sell, including statements that their machines are better than other leading clinics. When I complained about the pricing (well over £3,000, not the £395 advertised) I was told that they couldn't discuss discounts because their phone system was down - I might have believed it if I hadn't seen one of the staff on the phone during the numerous waiting periods. I asked for evidence of people getting surgery for £395 by emailing their customer services. They refused on the basis it was "proprietory information". If you like hard sell/cattle market treatment then optical express is the one for you.

After four consultation at different clinics I eventually decided NOT to go for optical express. Whilst I'm sure they can laser eyes as well as the next surgeon, their customer service leaves a lot to be desired. I received a phone call from a girl at OE asking if i had any further questions or had decided anything regarding my eyes. I told her I had chosen a different clinic and had my surgery booked already. She then went on to you scare tactic to try to get me to reconsider going elsewhere; saying the other companies statics may not be reliable and that their laser won't be the latest technology. Who need that 4 days before an operation? It left me worried, and a little upset. I assume their sales team work on commission. It was like those people who go door to door to convince you to change your gas/electricity supplier. I had no problem with the consultation itself, but if you're getting your eyes done at an Optical Express, be wary of their sales tactics.
