1. Optical Express Laser Eye Surgery Review

I’m very happy with my laser treatment. There’s nothing to worry about – there’s no pain, and I would recommend it to anybody. The aftercare at Optical Express is also very good. I just wish i had done it years ago. – Philip Lavelle

Optical Express uses world leading technology, and their laser platform – the VISX S4IR – delivers safe, accurate and precise results. Fun fact: Optical Express is the only vision correction provider to invest in the iFS150 intraLASE in each of its clinics – the same technology that led to NASA backing laser eye surgery for astronauts in 2007.

Over 99% of Optical Express patients achieved 20/20 vision or better following treatment, according to a study carried out in June 2017.

With over 25 years’ experience in eye care, Optical Express boasts excellent surgical outcomes, and has invested £400 million in technology to offer advanced methods for vision correction.

Optical Express has 128 clinics in the UK alone – far more than any other eye surgery provider. Its locations include London, Liverpool, Manchester, Leeds, Glasgow, Edinburgh, and Dublin, with many more situated in all corners of the country.

True, it was an expensive operation, but I spent £500 a year on contact lenses and optician appointments – I see it as an investment! – Dave Reyner

Laser eye surgery at Optical Express costs from just £595, or from £1,995 for lens replacement surgery. Of course, these prices depend on the treatment you choose, as well as your prescription, so you’ll want to pop in for a free consultation to get a tailored quote.

Optical Express is one of the cheapest laser eye surgery clinics in the UK. Its prices are well below average, compared to over 70 leading eye clinics and hospitals nationwide.

Laser Eye Surgery

Laser eye surgery is a simple procedure that can correct your vision in a matter of minutes. Optical Express offers the most popular types: LASIK and LASEK (if you are not suitable for the surgical LASIK).

In both treatments, a cool beam advanced laser reshapes the cornea (the surface of your eye). Optical Express uses a technology called iDesign, which is based on Wavefront technology and takes thousands of eye measurements to produce the best results.

Lens Replacement

Optical Express has 20 years’ experience in lens replacement surgery. This surgery is a popular treatment for people with long distance vision, short distance vision, and even cataracts.

An eye consultant can help you decide which surgery best suits your needs:

  • Refractive lens exchange (RLE) – This surgery replaces the natural lens with a synthetic intraocular lens (IOL) implant.
  • Phakic IOL – This type of IOL is an alternative to laser eye surgery for patients with strong prescriptions.
  • YAG laser treatment – YAG laser capsulotomy is a non-invasive procedure used to treat refractive former lens exchange patients whose vision starts to fade over the years.

Cataract Surgery

Optical Express performs the highest number of cataract surgeries – after the NHS, according to its website.

Cataracts are small, blurry patches on your eyes, giving you cloudy vision. Cataract surgery involves removing your damaged lens, and replacing it with a premium synthetic one for sharper near and distance vision.

Aftercare

Optical Express custom-fits its aftercare plan to every patient. This plan includes any medication that will aid the healing process, optometrist-led follow-up appointments, and an out-of-hours medical helpline.

Patients receive 12 months’ continued care as standard, and Optical Express recommends annual examinations to maintain your eye health.

Safety Record

All surgical procedures carry a degree of risk. However, laser eye surgery has an impressive success rate, and is the most popular elective surgery in the world.

99.2% of patients achieved at least 20|20 vision following surgery at Optical Express, based on a study of 190,231 Optical Express patients with the most common prescriptions. That’s why this eye clinic promises 20|20 vision or your money back.

Just be aware that the risks increase the more complicated the surgery. Optical Express will provide a screening service to check whether you are suitable for surgical treatment.

Completely painless procedure, would definately recommend it. Wish i'd done it sooner. I now have 20/20 vision, having worn glasses for 20 years.Very good after care arrangements in place. Only problem was 2 hour delay from appointment time for surgery until surgery done , with no explanation.

I have today had my 3 month check up at Milton Keynes Optical Express. I am 35 and wore glasses for short-sightedness for 25 years. I have better than 20-20 vision and I find it quite incredible. There is slight glare at night compared to before the procedure, but i think this is lessening. the whole process was fairly easy, physically, and very worthwhile. At Optical Express the surgeon, optometrist (Darcey) and counsellor were all very good, although the counsellor was a bit dim. The only criticism I would make that there was no pro-action on their part. when i had questions i would telephone and never be able to reach a counsellor or optometrist. there was no voicemail and my messages left with at reception were rarely passed on. my calls were never returned. the clinic operates using a diary stretching only a few weeks into the future, so appointments for the procedure and check ups are very hit and miss. i was awaiting a call offering me a date for the procedure, and would probably still be waiting had i not phoned up and pestered them until i happily discovered a cancellation. so the patient care was excellent in one way, and terrible in another. i was told that if i had any questions i need only phone them to ask. the reality was that i could never get to speak to anyone or have my calls returned. having said that, i am very pleased with the procedure, and the medical side was very professional indeed.

I had LASIK surgery on 21/7/04 at Shaftesbury Ave. I would recommend the surgery, my prescription was -3.75 left and -2.50 right (astigmatism) and I can now see perfectly! The procedure was nowhere near as bad as I was expecting, it really DIDN'T hurt. The worse experience was dealing with the nerves as it was happening. I wasn't in the 'theatre' for more than 15 minutes and felt fine afterwards. It was more comfortable to keep my eyes closed. My eyes felt gritty after the anaesthetic had worn off, I took some pain killers and went to bed. By 8 o'clock that evening my vision was good and my eyes no longer felt uncomfortable. By the following morning I could see perfectly! I had better than 20/20 vision 24 hours after surgery. I would say the worse thing about the whole experience has been the conflicting information the clinic have given me. To start off with they said I couldn't wear make-up for a week, on the day they said this should actually be two and a half weeks. Then they said I shouldn't rub or touch my eyes, so how do you get make-up off without that? The optician the day after, also said I shouldn't get water into my eyes. She never specified how long for! So if you can cope with that then go for it! I had my month check three days ago and all is well. Life without glasses is completely different, I'm more confident than ever before.

I had LASIK treatment in Southampton in October. From the initial consultation through surgery and the follow-up appointments I found the staff at Optical Express to be friendly and helpful with very accurate diagnosis, advice and giudance. The only reason I do not give them a 5 star rating is I believe there was an unnecessary amount of waiting around on the day of the treatment. The result of the treatment exceeded my expectations.

I had lasik performed on 4/01/02. Perscription was L -5.75 R -5.50 .Its been three years now and eyes are still great no complaints .

07 Feb 2005

I have Lasek surgery on the 21st January 2005. I arrived at the Manchester clinic at 2.15pm on the 21st and only had to wait a couple of minutes before I was seen. I had to have my eyes checked by the surgeon (Mr Khan) and then i was ready for my Surgery. It was a little stramge at first but the staff made me feel at ease and even held my hand as i was terrified. The surgery took about 14 minutes with the laser on each eye for just over a minute. The procedure was not painful although felt very strange. I could see a little clearer afterwards but was told that might sight would get better in the following days. I felt tired when i got home and went straight to bed. The morning after my eyes were swollen and felt like a burning sensation in my eyes. I must warn you, if you are having Lasek surgery it is quite painful afterwards, but i am glad i have done it. My eyes were -5.00 in both eyes and I can see so clear now. Good Luck!!!!!!

14 Feb 2005

I found the staff extremely supportive and informative. Every thing was explained in great detail. The only bad point is how long I was kept in the waiting room, didn't help the nerves much! Eyes taken about 5 days to settle. On the whole very impressed.

06 Apr 2005

Had LASIK done at the Birmingham Optical Express clinic on March 1st. I was nervous before the treatment, especially as the patient before me had just had some sort of fi in the waitng room and the nurses seemed a little at a loss as to what to do. However things went really well and by 8pm that evening I was happily watching TV. I've had no problems at all and no discomfort. I have just had my 1 month check and have more than 20/20 vision. My only advice would be to take a book to read as there is a lot of waiting around both at the various consultations and on the day of the procedure.

28 Apr 2005

I had Wavefront surgery performed by Dr Eve on April 21. The surgery itself was superb and the aftercare excellent. Unfortunately the patient counsellor I had my consultation with gave some bad advice and on the day of the surgery the medical team advised against performing regular LASIK surgery due to the size of my pupils. I had to pay an extra £800 on the day to cover the cost of the more expensive Wavefront procedure. While I understand the reasons for this, my surgery was booked 3 months in advance.. surely I could've been contacted before then? Aside from this I have been very impressed with the team at Optical Express.

24 May 2005

Thought I would leave my comments as I found this site benficial prior to my surgery. I had LASEK in Belfast on 7th May (suitable for LASIK also). I arrived at 3pm for my appointment to find the staff waiting for me, so no long wait. I was ready to go home at 4pm. The procedure was totally pain free. Going to the dentist is worse. I could see an improvement about 30 seconds after surgery which I hadn't expected. About two hours later I experienced discomfort (but no pain) which lasted for 36 hours. It was mostly a constant watering of the eyes and an inability to keep them opened. However vast improvement by day two although vision still blurred. By day five my vision was very good and by two week check up I have 20/20 vision. My prescription was about -4.5 in each eye which required about 45 seconds of lasering. Overall very happy with procedure and would do it again without hestitation. Mr Aziz and his staff were very polite and courteous. Be prepared though, this is very much an express service as the name suggests and does feel a little bit like being on a production line. Excellent value for money though and would recommend Optical Express.
