Manchester Royal Eye Hospital

Previous to surgery i was very short sighted (about -7.5), and for future career plans i had decided upon laser surgery.

I had consulted numerous websites and done a lot of research prior to treatment, including accessing this website. I discovered that Manchester was the best place to go, even coming all the way from Newcastle.

I was not wrong, and have been delighted with the results and service i obtained. My first visit was with the nurse, who was excellent in explaining the procedure, and did a number of tests to test my suitability. This put my mind at immediate ease. The second part was to meet my surgeon, Mr Leon Au. Mr Au took time in explaining things to me in considerable detail, which was very satisfactory.

I undertook Lasek surgery, which involves more pain but the longer term effects are said to be better. Mr Au demonstrated the equipment, and procedures. The surgery was over in about 10mins, and i did not feel any pain or difficulties due to the anaestetic drops used.

Due to my prescription Mr Au decided it was best not to fully correct my vision as this may cause future problems. However due to the quality of the laser used (0.6mm) the outcome was near perfect.

I was warned about the after pain lasting for a few days, but it was not as bad as i expected. It is best to go with someone as there is no way you can drive back or see very well immediately after. I was given a big bag of drops and medication which eliminated all pain.

After surgery vision is not great, but by the next morning the improvement is vast, and gets better with every day. I am now 2months after surgery and after a series of eye examinations my vision is near perfect.

After surgery, 3 or 4 aftercare visits are required with same surgeon. This was very good, as Mr Au could track my progress at every stage.

I could not be happier with my surgery, Mr Au and Manchester Centre for Vision. It was highly worthwhile and has transformed my life. I would highly recommend it to anyone.

I had LASEK surgery in August 2007 having spent the last couple of years (meticulously) researching the different procedures, clinics and surgeons. I had decided the Eye Hospital to beprobably the best option as the patient sees the same operating surgeon and clinical staff from start to finish. I had also decided on LASEK which seems to be slightly more hassle in the short-term but lower-risk long-term and equal in terms of potential outcomes. It is imperative to do your own research though as this will vary from individual to individual.

At the Manchester Eye Hospital there is no rush, no pressureand a very honest and matter of fact approach. I was also heartened to find that profits from laser surgery are invested back into NHS treatments rather than lining the coffers of some glossy private operation.

I had a moderate prescription of -0.4 in both eyes. The operation was not painful as such, though a bit surreal, and was over in 5 minutes. Afterwards I was highly uncomfortable – imagine peeling onions for a whole afternoon and the resulting tears and irritation. This gradually subsided after a week and was much better after a fortnight. There was a great deal of fluctuation in my eyesight for the first 2 – 3 weeks – varying from extreme super-vision to blurred vision and this was quite alarming – but this does decrease as the eyes settle and heal. It is all part of the process. After a month things had settled much more and I had reached -0.5 in both eyes. I was pleased but a little frustrated that I still had a slight prescription. As another month passed however there was even further improvement and stabilisation and now I have 0.0 prescription in both eyes.

To say I am pleased is an understatement and I could not recommend Mr.Brahma, Leon & the other staff highly enough.Make sure you research / discuss fully the processes involved as we are all different – all I can say is the Manchester Eye Hospital have transformed my vision and my quality of life has improved massively for me as a result and (for me at least) it was worth every penny.

I had my lasek surgery in April 2006 and I can honestly say it is one of the best things I have ever done. I had a relatively high prescription of -7.00 both eyes, had been wearing glasses from 6 years of age and contact lens from 18 years of age – nearly 50 years in total. I did my internet research, and chose the Manchester Eye Hospital as I believed they would have the very best care available. I didn't even bother looking at the high street clinics. I was treated courteously and efficiently before, during and after the treatment by all the staff from the medical staff through to the receptionist. I always felt I was in very safe hands, although I found the op a bit scary and the pain in one eye was almost unbearable for a couple of days. I was given lots of information both about the process and the aftercare and never felt that my case was just another dollar. I had opted for mono-vision (one eye left slightly under corrected) to reduce the need for contact lens or glasses, and am now -0.25 and -1.00. It took me a few months to really get used to it, but all the way through I was assured that the op could be repeated in the under-corrected eye if that's what I wanted. I am now more than happy with the result and I cannot recommend the Eye Hospital highly enough. It was worth every penny.

6 months on, and having been for my fifth post-op checkup (all of which were with the surgeon who performed my op), I am -0.25 in my left eye and 0.00 in my right. I am very pleased with the process in all areas, and would certainly recommend Lasek+wavefront as performed here. This isn't the cheapest clinic around, but you definitely get what you paid for.

Had my eyes treated with lasek+wavefront on 19th July, a procedure I was more comfortable with than Lasik, based on my research. And so far, so good. My vision is clear in both eyes after 2 weeks, albeit with some discomfort in bright light. As for the clinic, it presents a friendly, relaxed impression to prospective patients, and doesn't try-too-hard to be “slick” like some of the sharper commercial operators out there. It's part of the Royal Eye Hospital, which I understand treats complications presented by other clinics, so you're in the right place straight off, as you've always access to a consultant eye surgeon (they try to ensure you see the same guy all the way through pre and post op visits) and have 24 hour emergency access to the Eye Hospital – doubt many private clinics can offer that! Obviously, this access to this benefit depends on you living close to Manchester. I understand from the literature that surplus profits are reinvested in the Royal Eye Hospital's NHS operations and research. They don't go in for flash websites and glossy brochures, all of which appealed to me.
