Ultralase

The first Ultralase clinic was opened in January 1991 at the Clatterbridge Hospital near Chester. At the time, all treatments performed were Photorefractive Keratotomy, or PRK, until the Lasik procedure was introduced in 1995.

With the introduction of Lasik, and the clear advantages it demonstrated for certain patients, Ultralase went through a period of dramatic growth through 2002.

2003 Ultralase introduced the revolutionary UltraPlus treatment with Wavefront technology, giving patients visual outcomes far surpassing those of standard laser treatments. Ultralase became the first provider to have all treatment outcomes verified by independent audit.

In March 2009, the commitment to clinical excellence led Ultralase to become the first UK provider to have all Great Britain surgeons certified in Laser Refractive Surgery by the Royal College of Ophthalmologists (RCOphth).

Ultralase comes in second place in our list of the best laser eye surgery clinics in the UK for price, just after Optical Express. That’s because this clinic offers the full shebang: transparent prices, 0% finance options, free consultations, and competitive prices.

The cost of eye surgery at Ultralase ranges between £1,1695 and £2,995 (per eye), depending on the treatment type that you agree upon in discussion with a surgeon. These prices are in line with the average cost of eye surgery, but not quite as low as Optical Express.

You can count on Ultralase for the main laser eye and lens replacement surgery procedures. These include: LASIK and LASEK with Wavefront options, as well as refractive lens exchange (RLE), implantable contact lenses, and cataract surgery.

With nearly 3,000 overall positive reviews from independent customers in the UK, Ultralase is one of the best-rated laser eye surgery clinics by patients. People value this clinic for its:

  • Friendly prices – Fixed and reasonable prices help you know what to expect.
  • Nationwide clinics – Ultralase has 20 clinics in the UK, including in London, Reading and St Albans.
  • Decent aftercare – Ultralase provides free aftercare – one check-up and drops for the first three months.

Despite glowing reviews, however, it’s worth reading the fine print if you do choose Ultralase. In 2015, BBC’s Watchdog exposed the problems countless laser eye surgery patients have experienced accessing their lifelong aftercare.

Most user reviews on Lasik Eyes show happy experiences, but then again most people never need to take advantage of their lifetime guarantee. If you would like to find out whether Ultralase is the top-rated laser eye surgery clinic near you, we’re here to help.

I had laser surgery at the Birmingham Ultralase clinic in the summer of 2003 and have never looked back. I can still remember getting up the following morning, looking up the road and the miracle of being able to read a car number plate without squinting. I now have 20 – 20 vision and have never had any problems since the surgery. Since I had it done, my sister and two of her daughters have had laser treatment in Essex and they too have been delighted with the results.

I had Lasek Wavefront treatment done by Mr S Perera at St Albans Ultralase clinic on 29/5/4 as my corneas were too thin for the newer Lasik treatment. My prescriptions were about -3.5 with astigmatism in my left eye and 3 in right eye. I had been concerned as I have a large pupil, but at 6mm (I think) it was ok as they can work up to 8mm or more, not sure on that.

My friend had had Lasik with another company in London (which was not convenient to me)and was thrilled as she could see the next day and was driving in 2 days, so my expectation was along those lines.

It was all explained to me that healing took longer with Lasek but ultimately gave the same results, although somewhat more painful recovery.

On the day of surgery, which was on the Saturday, following a Thursday consultation (which gave me less chance to think about the pros and cons, but also less time to worry…) there was an hour and a half wait, but I was lucky to be able to control nerves with hypnosis, (being a hypnotherapist, myself) but the girl due after me was getting very nervous.

The consultant was not happy to operate on the previous lady until he had redone her tests, which in itself was actually very reassuring, although it made it a long day.

It was indeed painful once the anaesthetic wore off and my eyes watered and nose ran constantly for a couple of days. I was stunned to see so well straight away, that I was overwhelmed !

It took quite a while for my eyes to settle down, they did say judge after 3 months and now it is 4 months nearly. I am thrilled as I can see the little trees on the horizon, I can see the leaves in the distance, I can see things in the distance I didn't even know where there, having worn glasses since the age of 11.

I was told I would have dry eyes, but I haven't and also that as I am 45 I would have to use reading glasses, but I can focus on the tiniest writing, now and it is wonderful.

Playing badminton is great, as the halo effect has diminished and is far less than with glasses in the past when I had about 8 lights to contend with. Gym is much easier without specs falling down nose. Swimming is fantastic, though I get spalshed in the eyes where-as before my specs protected, but got so wet and vision blurred with the water.

I would recommend this treatment to anyone and did make an appointment to have it done at Boots a couple of years before, but bottled out the dau before. Ultralase were excellent, though one optometrist was a tiny bit brusque with me, but they changed me to a different gentleman straight away.

I am thrilled to have had the courage to have this op., as it is wonderful to see so clearly now, it is as if I couldn't see properly at all before !!

Many thanks to everyone who helped me to really see for the first time. God Bless.

I have worn glasses and contact lenses since I was a child. It's fantastic not to be tied to that anymore. A simple, painless treatment that is over so quickly, with excellent results! Definitely recommended!!

Ultralase are fantastic! They accepted me 3 months prior to taking a year out travelling. When I came back for a check-up, I needed my left eye 'tweaked'. Superb – all still under my original aftercare. Supremely professional and very caring!

I turned up on the doorstep of Leeds Ultralase after Optimax cancelled my appointment by telephone 45 minutes before I was booked in (I was actually walking to the clinic from the railway station!). I was told that I had been booked in BY MISTAKE!!. Optimax apparently did not wish to treat me with LASEK due to my prescription (-7 and -8), however Ultralase has no problems with this and immediately gave me a full consultation. The staff were extremely professional and the clinic impressive. Everything seemed very high tech (they do wavefront at no extra cost and have iris recognition as standard). I would highly recommend Ultralase to anyone thinking of having laser treatment. You definitely get what you pay for and I could see why Ultralse were more expensive than Optimax as soon as I walked in to the clinic. There is no point in going for the cheapest clinic where your eyesight is at stake.
