The first Ultralase clinic was opened in January 1991 at the Clatterbridge Hospital near Chester. At the time, all treatments performed were Photorefractive Keratotomy, or PRK, until the Lasik procedure was introduced in 1995.

Having Ultralase treatment has been one of the best things I have ever done. It has made such a fantastic difference to my sight – to be told that I could now pilot a plane if I wanted because my sight was up to the required level was unbelievable, especially when I had always referred to myself as “blind as a bat”. I had considered laser treatment for many years, and following the
successful treatment of a friend of mine (along with the breakage of my
glasses!), I finally plucked up the courage to have my consultation. From
the minute I stepped in to the Ultralase office, I was at ease, and when I was informed that I was a suitable candidate, I was thrilled. I had to wait approx 1 month before my treatment, and during that time, I went through all kinds of emotions. I even spoke on the telephone to Maurice Quinlan, who was my initial first contact at Ultralase, and he gave me the confidence I needed to believe that finally this was the right time to do this. I had my =proceedure done at the Hammersmith clinic on Friday 22nd October at approx 12.15, and by 12.30 both eyes were done, and I COULD SEE! By my first check up, the next day, I had achieved 20/20 vision, and touch wood, absolutely no side effects! I have been putting contact lenses into my eyes for the last 25 years, and !

I consider myself EXTREMELY fortunate with the results that I have had. I was approx. -8.5 right eye and -4.75 left eye with high astigmatism in my right eye. After 7 months my left eye is now perfect, better than 20/20 and my right eye is marginally worse as I still have slight astigmatism. Considering some of the side effects I could have had (I did experience halo effect around headlights and street lights) I have had NO PROBLEMS WHATSOEVER. I do have some reservations about my vision in poor light…but doesn't everyone?!?!? I was particularly fastidious when it came to the aftercare treatment e.g. patches and glasses for two weeks afterwards.
