The first Ultralase clinic was opened in January 1991 at the Clatterbridge Hospital near Chester. At the time, all treatments performed were Photorefractive Keratotomy, or PRK, until the Lasik procedure was introduced in 1995.
With the introduction of Lasik, and the clear advantages it demonstrated for certain patients, Ultralase went through a period of dramatic growth through 2002.
2003 Ultralase introduced the revolutionary UltraPlus treatment with Wavefront technology, giving patients visual outcomes far surpassing those of standard laser treatments. Ultralase became the first provider to have all treatment outcomes verified by independent audit.
In March 2009, the commitment to clinical excellence led Ultralase to become the first UK provider to have all Great Britain surgeons certified in Laser Refractive Surgery by the Royal College of Ophthalmologists (RCOphth).
Ultralase Prices
Ultralase comes in second place in our list of the best laser eye surgery clinics in the UK for price, just after Optical Express. That’s because this clinic offers the full shebang: transparent prices, 0% finance options, free consultations, and competitive prices.
The cost of eye surgery at Ultralase ranges between £1,1695 and £2,995 (per eye), depending on the treatment type that you agree upon in discussion with a surgeon. These prices are in line with the average cost of eye surgery, but not quite as low as Optical Express.
Treatments Offered
You can count on Ultralase for the main laser eye and lens replacement surgery procedures. These include: LASIK and LASEK with Wavefront options, as well as refractive lens exchange (RLE), implantable contact lenses, and cataract surgery.
Is Ultralase Right for You?
With nearly 3,000 overall positive reviews from independent customers in the UK, Ultralase is one of the best-rated laser eye surgery clinics by patients. People value this clinic for its:
- Friendly prices – Fixed and reasonable prices help you know what to expect.
- Nationwide clinics – Ultralase has 20 clinics in the UK, including in London, Reading and St Albans.
- Decent aftercare – Ultralase provides free aftercare – one check-up and drops for the first three months.
Despite glowing reviews, however, it’s worth reading the fine print if you do choose Ultralase. In 2015, BBC’s Watchdog exposed the problems countless laser eye surgery patients have experienced accessing their lifelong aftercare.
Most user reviews on Lasik Eyes show happy experiences, but then again most people never need to take advantage of their lifetime guarantee. If you would like to find out whether Ultralase is the top-rated laser eye surgery clinic near you, we’re here to help.

Our Testimonials
From being absolutely terrified to completely elated! Throughout the entire process I've felt supported and very well cared for. I couldn't fault a thing. Definitely the best money I've ever spent, worth every penny! I would recommend laser treatment at Ultralase to anyone!
I presented LCRS with something of a challenge with my extreme myopia and astigmatism (I used to be -12 and -13. The only option open to that kind of problem was a lens implant. During my consultation Dr. David Jory explained everthing to me – the potential problems, the likely result. I had my first implant at the beginning of May 2005. Due to a reaction to one of the drops after the operation, I suffered from high pressure in the eyeball afterwards, but once that was sorted out, I started feeling very good about the results. The month between the two operations was difficult because of the continuing myopia in the other uncorrected eye, but once the second implant was done at the beginning of June 2005, it really started to come home to me that after years of a combination of specs and contact lenses, I was now free of all that. Following the two operations I am OK to drive, and need mild reading glasses to read a book and to work. My short-sightedness has been corrected to within (to me) acceptable levels (around -1.25 so far I think) Some astigmatism remained, and at the time of writing I have had one further micro-surgery procedure on eye 1, which is helping to correct it, and I am scheduled for another in the right eye in a couple of weeks.
Being at the top end of the age range for this kind of procedure, I knew that I would not achieve the perfect vision of a 20-year old, but I now have vision good enough to drive, watch TV, in fact, as good as it was with contacts – and – the best – I can see clearly in the morning when I wake. I don't need to carry contact lens solutions with me in case of an emergency, or a spare pair of specs, and I feel free of a burden.
I believe that the vision reading will improve over time as the eyes (and my brain) adjust to the new situation.
Anyone reading this with extremely high levels of myopia which cannot be corrected by laser can be assured that a lens implant is an alternative, but it IS quite expensive. However the follow-up surgery and the check-ups are included in the price, and for me it's been worthwhile – even though it's still early days (only 7 weeks since the first operation)
I may add to this after some more time has gone by.
MY OPTITION HAD TOLD ME THAT BECAUSE MY SIGHT WAS +3.5 IN BOTH EYES TREATMENT WAS NOT FOR ME. HOW WRONG THIS PERSON WAS – I HAD MY CONSULTATION AND ALL THAT WAS EXPLAINED. I BOOKED MY TREATMENT WHILST AT THE CONSULTATION. I WORE CONTACT LENSES WHICH I HAD TO LEAVE OUT. I MADE A MISTAKE AND LEFT THEM IN TO LONG, SO I HAD TO REMAKE MY TREATMENT APPOINTMENT. ULTRALASE WERE GREAT, NO FUSS JUST BOOKED TWO WEEKS LATER. I ARRIVED FOR MY TREATMENT WHERE THE NURSE HELD MY HAND THROUGH ALL THE TREATMENT. TREATMENT WAS OK WITH NO PAIN AND THE IMMEDIATE BENEFIT OF VISION WITH NO LENSES OR GLASSES. I HAVE FOUND OVER THE LAST MONTH MY EYES HAVE HAVE JUST GOT BETTER. AT THIS CHECKUP 1 MONTH ON MY VISION IS AT 20/20. CAN YOU IMAGINE MY JOY, ESSPECIALLY WHEN MY VERY WRONG OPTITION SAID IT AINT FOR ME!
FANTASTIC SERVICES FROM A FRIENDLY STAFF. ALL QUESTIONS ANSWERED IN DETAIL BUT IN A LANGUAGE THAT WAS EASY TO UNDERSTAND.
9 MONTHS ON I HAVE COMPLETELY FORGOTTON THE PAIN OF GLASSES AND CONTACTS.
OVERALL WELL WORTH THE MONEY WITH EXCELLENT RESULTS.
Wish I'd had laser eye surgery sooner! Highly recommend Ultralase – very professional staff. Its great to wake up in the morning and be able to see clearly. Also not having to bother about contact lenses and solutions is brilliant. Ultralase is great!
