The first Ultralase clinic was opened in January 1991 at the Clatterbridge Hospital near Chester. At the time, all treatments performed were Photorefractive Keratotomy, or PRK, until the Lasik procedure was introduced in 1995.

With the introduction of Lasik, and the clear advantages it demonstrated for certain patients, Ultralase went through a period of dramatic growth through 2002.

2003 Ultralase introduced the revolutionary UltraPlus treatment with Wavefront technology, giving patients visual outcomes far surpassing those of standard laser treatments. Ultralase became the first provider to have all treatment outcomes verified by independent audit.

In March 2009, the commitment to clinical excellence led Ultralase to become the first UK provider to have all Great Britain surgeons certified in Laser Refractive Surgery by the Royal College of Ophthalmologists (RCOphth).

Ultralase Prices

Ultralase comes in second place in our list of the best laser eye surgery clinics in the UK for price, just after Optical Express. That’s because this clinic offers the full shebang: transparent prices, 0% finance options, free consultations, and competitive prices.

The cost of eye surgery at Ultralase ranges between £1,1695 and £2,995 (per eye), depending on the treatment type that you agree upon in discussion with a surgeon. These prices are in line with the average cost of eye surgery, but not quite as low as Optical Express.

Treatments Offered

You can count on Ultralase for the main laser eye and lens replacement surgery procedures. These include: LASIK and LASEK with Wavefront options, as well as refractive lens exchange (RLE), implantable contact lenses, and cataract surgery.

Is Ultralase Right for You?

With nearly 3,000 overall positive reviews from independent customers in the UK, Ultralase is one of the best-rated laser eye surgery clinics by patients. People value this clinic for its:

  • Friendly prices – Fixed and reasonable prices help you know what to expect.
  • Nationwide clinics – Ultralase has 20 clinics in the UK, including in London, Reading and St Albans.
  • Decent aftercare – Ultralase provides free aftercare – one check-up and drops for the first three months.

Despite glowing reviews, however, it’s worth reading the fine print if you do choose Ultralase. In 2015, BBC’s Watchdog exposed the problems countless laser eye surgery patients have experienced accessing their lifelong aftercare.

Most user reviews on Lasik Eyes show happy experiences, but then again most people never need to take advantage of their lifetime guarantee. If you would like to find out whether Ultralase is the top-rated laser eye surgery clinic near you, we’re here to help.

I had my LASIK done at Chester 4 days ago. Forty minutes after the exam I was 20/20 in one eye, and within a couple of hours I was seeing as well with both eyes as I ever did with glasses or contact lenses. I was mildly myopic before (-2.25, -3, a bit of astigmatism) but I didn't expect such a fast result. All the staff have been fantastic all the time.

I had my treatment done at Hammersmith nearly five weeks ago. I can endorse everyone's comments about the professional treatment before and post-op. The only thing that took me by surprise was the amount of pain I suffered for about six hours afterwards - really nasty. I wonder now if I was reacting badly to the drops - I now use (infrequently) the Refresh drops which have no preservative. My vision is much better in the morning - by evening I notice the difference in my eyes becomes more marked and driving at might is not brilliant. I'm using reading specs, but that's because I'm old (50) and needed them with my contacts before the op.
All in all I'm glad I had the procedure done, but I wish my left eye could have been improved to the same degree as my right. Am having my second check up in Guildford day after tomorrow, and might be told more about the imbalance in my sight then.
I'd be pleased to talk to anyone considering going ahead . . .

I had surgery just over 5 weeks ago. The staff at Cardiff are all great and I cannot fault them… however I have experienced a Roller Coaster of emotions and results since the procedure.. An abrasion on the right eye, debris under the flap, dry eye and now I have been told that I have been left with astigmatism and short sightedness in the right eye. Although I am sure that all will come right in the end I have to wait a minimum of 2 more months before they can decide what to do next leaving me with double (sometime treble) & blurred vision in the right eye and daily variable vision in the left. I have kept a diary of events which is updated regularly. www.bdprice.alphaphe.com/LASIK.htm - check it out.

Update: I had my LASIK surgery (done by Dr. Paul Cherry) over a month ago and recently had another checkup at Ultralase (Bristol). I haven't had any problems and my left eye has improved quite a bit since the op (it wasn't as good as I'd hoped for the first couple of weeks) - my vision being about 20/20. I'd thoroughly recommend having the treatment, and I know that several friends have now said they are interested in getting their eyes fixed sometime.

I had the treatment performed on 30.05.02 and although its early days I can see better than when I wore the specs (I was a -7). The treatment was painless and all the staff were friendly and made me aware that I may still need specs noting my prescription. Reading is slightly blurred however I'm going for a follow up on Friday and they are even showing the England match. By the way my wife had the treatment performed here two years ago and although she had no probs and eyesight is fully restored it's still taken me all this time to pluck up the courage. doh.

I had my eyes done in Hammersmith on 6 June by Vinod Gupta. (I was -3.75 R -1.5 L plus mild astigmatism). Results are fantastic - I now have 6/6 vision and it's so wonderful to be able to see properly! From consultation to post-op everything was fantastic and I couldn't fault the staff. As for the actual op, I was so scared I was almost in tears so I went for a sedative. The nurse, Tracey, was really good at reassuring me and even held my hand during the operation. Throughout the operation everything was explained clearly and everything went extremely smoothly. Probably the worst bit was being able to see the corneal flap flipped back! Mr Gupta is excellent - very reassuring calm & confident - and I felt 100% sure about entrusting my eyes to him. The operation was over in a very short time and the smell wasn't anything like as bad as I had expected - just a faint whiff as if you'd put your arm too close to a gas ring for a few seconds. After lying with eyes closed in a darkened room for 20 mins it was time to go. Didn't really need the sunglasses as my eyes weren't even light-sensitive. The only side effect I had was a gritty feeling which wore off within a few hours, also of course my vision was a bit hazy for a few hours, but no discomfort or anything else. Close-up focus is still a bit funny but that will sort itself out. I've been raving about Ultralase ever since and have been boring everybody senseless with how wonderful it is to be able to see properly. I'd thoroughly recommend Ultralase and in particular Mr Gupta - his reputation is well deserved.

Had my treatment on Friday (14/6/02). I found all the staff at Guildford helpful and kind. The treatment was painless and successful as the following day check up shows I now have 20/20 vision.I had some discomfort (lasting only a couple of hours)on Friday evening but believe me its worth it!

Treatment carried out on 28.6.02 at the Bristol branch. Probably the most frightening thing I have ever done! My eyesight was quite bad -7 with an astigmatism in my left eye that had taken some time to settle when I stopped wearing gas permeable contact lenses. The procedure itself was uncomfortable but not at all painful and the nurse was very supportive, holding my hand! I spent the first week convinced I was going to wrinkle my flaps or get an infection! To begin with I was longsighted and the astigmatism was still a bit odd giving me double vision. This appeared to make me feel very sick and I was glad I had booked time off of work. I also found the drops clogged up my eyelashes and I was too frightened to clean them off so I ended up with my eyes weighted down until I went for my chech up. I cannot fault the support given to me by ultralase every time I phoned and the check up a week later was very reassuring. Today is my first day not wearing the clear glassess which is a relief and I feel much happier with the results. To be fair my surgeon had warned me that with my prescription I may well need to wear glassess for fine work but so far I can see to drive, read work etc. The sight does seem to vary a little each day and the astigmatism is still noticeable if I look out of the one eye but my brain seems to have come to terms with it and so generally I don't notice it. I was warned that I would probably have some problems with dry eye but so far this has been OK - infact I find the drops tend to crystalise and cause more problems so I have stopped using the artificial tears. So all in all I am pleased with the result and I am sure once the month is up and I can return to normal, eye make-up, washing my face etc I will appreciate the freedom I now have. To wake up and see the alarm clock is truly amazing! Thanks to all those who have added to this site. I found it extremely helpful.

Very professional. I had my both my pre & post consultations at Chelmsford and my surgery at Tottenham Court Road, London…Mr Vinod Gupta (surgeon) was fantastic. Best £1700 spent ever!! I was fine afterwards immediately. Even went for Sushi afterwards it was just like a bit of Chlorine after swimming. Top-Tip ***Get a late booking so you can get home and go to sleep** Wake up fine next morning.

Had a very strong long sighted presciption with astigmatism (+5.0 -3.00) both eyes. Have done lots of research - this site has been a very valuable source of information and thanks to everyone and I would encourage anyone who has had surgery to share their comments as first hand experience is always the best. I have also visited two other clinics who advertise the fact that they can treat upto my prescription - Ultralase and The Eye Clinic - see those site for comments. Was refused treatment at both of these clinics as I was not guaranteed a 100 per cent correction and that wasnt good for them. My long term expectations were for me to have less reliance on glasses but I wasnt expecting total freedom. After looking at this web site I made an appointment with Accuvision and as I had to travel my consultation was booked and hour before surgery if I was suitable. So on Friday 26th July - three days ago - I went to London and met the most professional people i could possible wish to entrust my eyes to. Had a very thorough consultation with Vik - who seemed confident and reasuring - everything explained - my prescription nothing was guaranteed and i was happy to proceed. So within 20 minutes I was ready to lie under the laser. There were several viewers in the room - from other companies - which I have to say made me feel better because they were viewing what appeared to be an expert. Anyway the procedure itself was over very quickly - the only discomfort (not pain) was the suction and the eye clamps but both are bearable for a short period of time. Joined my husband in the waiting room and kept my eyes shut. The worst bit of the whole day was feeling travel sick in the car because I couldnt get my bearings. By 9pm - six hours post op - I could watch tv across the room. Slept well - with the annoying bee like eye shields. Woke up very early the next morning because I was so excited and had to read something - it was perfect - I couldnt have asked for more. Went for my check at the clinic and I had 20/20 in both eyes - what a result less than 24 hours post op. I have had a bit of blurring - which I was expecting but otherwise no pain at all - eyes are a little dry but the drops work well. Have my next check on Friday - will keep you all informed.
