The first Ultralase clinic was opened in January 1991 at the Clatterbridge Hospital near Chester. At the time, all treatments performed were Photorefractive Keratotomy, or PRK, until the Lasik procedure was introduced in 1995.

With the introduction of Lasik, and the clear advantages it demonstrated for certain patients, Ultralase went through a period of dramatic growth through 2002.

2003 Ultralase introduced the revolutionary UltraPlus treatment with Wavefront technology, giving patients visual outcomes far surpassing those of standard laser treatments. Ultralase became the first provider to have all treatment outcomes verified by independent audit.

In March 2009, the commitment to clinical excellence led Ultralase to become the first UK provider to have all Great Britain surgeons certified in Laser Refractive Surgery by the Royal College of Ophthalmologists (RCOphth).

Ultralase Prices

Ultralase comes in second place in our list of the best laser eye surgery clinics in the UK for price, just after Optical Express. That’s because this clinic offers the full shebang: transparent prices, 0% finance options, free consultations, and competitive prices.

The cost of eye surgery at Ultralase ranges between £1,1695 and £2,995 (per eye), depending on the treatment type that you agree upon in discussion with a surgeon. These prices are in line with the average cost of eye surgery, but not quite as low as Optical Express.

Treatments Offered

You can count on Ultralase for the main laser eye and lens replacement surgery procedures. These include: LASIK and LASEK with Wavefront options, as well as refractive lens exchange (RLE), implantable contact lenses, and cataract surgery.

Is Ultralase Right for You?

With nearly 3,000 overall positive reviews from independent customers in the UK, Ultralase is one of the best-rated laser eye surgery clinics by patients. People value this clinic for its:

  • Friendly prices – Fixed and reasonable prices help you know what to expect.
  • Nationwide clinics – Ultralase has 20 clinics in the UK, including in London, Reading and St Albans.
  • Decent aftercare – Ultralase provides free aftercare – one check-up and drops for the first three months.

Despite glowing reviews, however, it’s worth reading the fine print if you do choose Ultralase. In 2015, BBC’s Watchdog exposed the problems countless laser eye surgery patients have experienced accessing their lifelong aftercare.

Most user reviews on Lasik Eyes show happy experiences, but then again most people never need to take advantage of their lifetime guarantee. If you would like to find out whether Ultralase is the top-rated laser eye surgery clinic near you, we’re here to help.

From the assessment day (Bristol Clinic) I have been less than pleased with ultralase. I saw different staff each time i have been there and felt very pressured into making an appointment for WAVEFRONT. As there were not DISadvtages of having wavefront, and i don't care about the money when it comes to your eyes, I decided to book in for 2 months time for Thurs 27th may. I was then told they would have to write to me re an appoiment cos of some problem. I was sent an appoinment for 27th, but no aftercare app was made - it was left to me to organise that, and payment was demanded 2m prior to the event, which would cost 50 quid in interest alone. obviously I did not pay it. on Mon 24th i receive a phone call "So you;re booked in for Lasik right?" I explained it was wavefront, i even signed a form withit on and everything, but they had stuffed up and could not perform the op anytime this week. I was so upset, this is the ONLY time i can possibly have it done, so he said i could go to B'ham, just what i wanted to do before/after a stressful op. No discount was offered and an apology was only offered when i told him how disapointed i was. Then it is revealed i actually need to go 3wks before hand for some more tests, which i was not told about. Since nothing could be done I phoned Boots and had Lasik done - they informed me that actually they could increase the width of the laser beam to cover my large pupils so I wouldn't be any more 2at risk" of night glare than anyone else (the reason i went for wavefront in the first place). So Now i can see thanks to Boots - they were fantastic, and didn't make me doubt them once unlike ultralase. I'm sure their surgeons are fine, but their admin staff did not fill me with confidence.

I had Ultra-Lasik treatment on the 14th May 2004, the whole experience was excellent, its was a painless process, quick, and the results brillant. I used to be a -8 in both eyes with a bad Astigmatism, i can now see to Driving Standard unaided by Glasses or Contact Lenses. I would recommend Ultralase to anyone thinking of having Laser Eye Treatment, mainly because they treat you like an individual, the treatments they offer can now be tailor made to your own eyes with Iris Recognition, I am totaly impressed with my new lease of live. Thankyou Ultralase.

Had the surgery 4 weeks ago now, very pleased with the results, was -2.5 and -3, could not read the top letter on the chart before and now I can read the second line from the bottom, it is expensive, but worth it, and it is so nice not to wear contacts or glasses anymore, Most painful part- when they pull off the protective sticky sheet they put on your face- blimey thought I was having a face wax!! The op was painless. Worst part- Not being allowed to wear make-up for 2 weeks (or being allowed to brush my horse due to the dust and hair) Jenny

Had Lasik at the St. Albans clinic a week ago. I chose the clinic because of the surgeon, Mr. Vinod Gupta, who is reputedly one of the best and most experienced in the country. Well, he certainly did not let me down. He has done an excellent job with my eyes and my shortsight (-3.75 and -4.00) has gone completely. A week on, I can read the bottom line on the chart, better than 20/20. I have also been quite lucky with my presbyopia (I am 45 years old) and I have not needed to use reading glasses, except in very poor light conditions and for very fine print. And I am told this is going to get better over the next few weeks as my vision stabilises! Also, night vision is very good, very little problem with glare; this should inprove, too. I am absolutely delighted as the results so far have surpassed my expectations. Many thanks to Mr. Gupta, and also to all the Ultralase staff who looked after me, both in Tottenham Court Road (initial consultation) and in St. Albans (treatment). They have all been absolutely superb, thoroughly professional and accomodating; nothing is too much trouble!

Fantastic service from start to finish - highly professional and worth every penny. At all stages, the advice was spot on + attentive, and gave me real confidence. I was certainly not tempted to risk my eyes on a cheaper alternative and know that I went with the best one on the market - it certainly pays to do your homework in this respect. My eyes are now 'better' than 20:20 vision - unbelievable...I'm still pinching myself that it's happened!

I had been considering laser surgery for a few years and after finding that I was suitable I decided to go for it! I was really nervous but the staff at Hammersmith Ultralase were very friendly and reassuring. My prescription was -5 in one eye and -6 in the other so I was quite blind! The treatment was not as bad as I had anticipated- infact I was dreading it! The nurse talked me through the procedure which was really good to know whats going on and that everything that was happening was normal. My vision was very blurry immediately afterwards but I could still see a definate improvement. The next day I could see really well and actually went shopping! I had my eyes tested a week later and I already had 20/20 vision! I would recommend anyone who is thinking about having their eyes done to go for it! I have worn glasses since I was four and this has already made such a difference to me! What can I say - Have it done today!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It is fantastic not to have to wear glasses or contact lenses anymore, I am so glad I went ahead with the treatment. The nurses were very reassuring and kept you imformed at each stage. My vision is excellent now.

I just had my second eye treated by the LCRS (One diamond surgery, one lens implant). Before the treatment I went around some of the laser clinics, and they all offered me what they had, he same for both eyes (I am a bit unusual to have such a difference between the two eyes). Anyway, at the LCRS I felt that it was my choice, rather then being sold something. Both treatment went well and now, "good-bye contacts", Hurray! I will recommend them to my firends.

I couldn't recommend this surgery enough. I was made at ease from the beginning. All the staff were professional and made me confident that I was in safe hands. Now I can see better than I could with my glasses.

Had my treatment on the 10th May with Ultralase and all I can say is .... Waw. As far as the treatment day was concerned, my appointment was scheduled with Paul Cherry in Cardiff at 10.30am. Got there at 10.00 and I was very surprised that I was totally unphased about the procedure and what was about to happen to me. I had done my homework and research on Mr. Cherry and given that he has performed over 7,000 Lasik procedures and was well versed and respected in his field I approached the treatment day with an open and easy mind (a bit like putting your trust in a pilot when your half way down a runway). I appreciate that everyone feels different about this but thats the way I approached it. As far as the treatment is concerned, it all went as described to me during my consultation. I was met by Mr. Cherry first and he took me through the consent form ensuring I fully understood what I was signing up to, he then checked my prescription and cornea thickness to enusre they were the same as were taken during the consultation. I then went through to the pre treatment room where I was given a "goody bag" containing 3 different types of drops, a set of very becoming eye shields for sleep time, some tape for securing the shields, and written instructions of how and when to administer the drops. The very nice lady then applied the anaesthetic drops (which worked immediately) and she took me through to the treatment room where Mr. Cherry was waiting with 2 assistants (and the pre treatment lady held my hand all the time). Up onto the bed, head on the cushion and 15 minutes later I was lead into the recovery room with not a hint of pain whatsoever. Some people have commented on other forums about the clamp being uncomfortable and the saline solution being unpleasant when they flush the eye before replacing the flap but the mind plays funny games and if you think that is what is going to happen then it probably will. The best advice I can give in terms of recovery is get as much shut eye as you can after the procedure. I was back home by 12.30 (father drove), put the cd player on random, closed the curtains, set the alarm on my mobile and fell asleep. Mobile woke me after an hour, applied the drops as directed, set the alarm for another 2 hours, applied the drops again and fell back to sleep. The eyes were a little gritty and sore until about 6pm but I can honestly say that after that I didnt have any major discomfort. Sight was a little blurry for 2-3 hours (which is to be expected) but woke up the next morning, removed those gorgeous eye shields and ...... waw, thought I had my glasses on! Went back for my check up and read 1 line from the bottom of the chart. My prescription pre treatment was -1.25 and -1.50 and here I was 1 day after with better than 20 20 vision. It's still early days but at the moment I'm sat here with no pain, no blurring, and I keep taking my clear lens protective glasses off constantly to prove to myself that there's no prescription between me and what I'm looking at ..... Why didn't I do this years ago! I appreciate that everyone is different and the decision to go ahead with this treatment is a personal one, all I can say is that my experience with Ultralase was first class and their team in Cardiff were very professional.
