The first Ultralase clinic was opened in January 1991 at the Clatterbridge Hospital near Chester. At the time, all treatments performed were Photorefractive Keratotomy, or PRK, until the Lasik procedure was introduced in 1995.

With the introduction of Lasik, and the clear advantages it demonstrated for certain patients, Ultralase went through a period of dramatic growth through 2002.

2003 Ultralase introduced the revolutionary UltraPlus treatment with Wavefront technology, giving patients visual outcomes far surpassing those of standard laser treatments. Ultralase became the first provider to have all treatment outcomes verified by independent audit.

In March 2009, the commitment to clinical excellence led Ultralase to become the first UK provider to have all Great Britain surgeons certified in Laser Refractive Surgery by the Royal College of Ophthalmologists (RCOphth).

Ultralase Prices

Ultralase comes in second place in our list of the best laser eye surgery clinics in the UK for price, just after Optical Express. That’s because this clinic offers the full shebang: transparent prices, 0% finance options, free consultations, and competitive prices.

The cost of eye surgery at Ultralase ranges between £1,1695 and £2,995 (per eye), depending on the treatment type that you agree upon in discussion with a surgeon. These prices are in line with the average cost of eye surgery, but not quite as low as Optical Express.

Treatments Offered

You can count on Ultralase for the main laser eye and lens replacement surgery procedures. These include: LASIK and LASEK with Wavefront options, as well as refractive lens exchange (RLE), implantable contact lenses, and cataract surgery.

Is Ultralase Right for You?

With nearly 3,000 overall positive reviews from independent customers in the UK, Ultralase is one of the best-rated laser eye surgery clinics by patients. People value this clinic for its:

  • Friendly prices – Fixed and reasonable prices help you know what to expect.
  • Nationwide clinics – Ultralase has 20 clinics in the UK, including in London, Reading and St Albans.
  • Decent aftercare – Ultralase provides free aftercare – one check-up and drops for the first three months.

Despite glowing reviews, however, it’s worth reading the fine print if you do choose Ultralase. In 2015, BBC’s Watchdog exposed the problems countless laser eye surgery patients have experienced accessing their lifelong aftercare.

Most user reviews on Lasik Eyes show happy experiences, but then again most people never need to take advantage of their lifetime guarantee. If you would like to find out whether Ultralase is the top-rated laser eye surgery clinic near you, we’re here to help.

I spent months researching this topic, probably new as much as the surgeon, or at least that what I thought... I eventually got Lasik surgery with Wavefront technology. At first I was unhappy that my left eye wasn't as good as my right eye, but the surgeon told me to give it time, something about being in the + and always stating everything is excellent. What I noticed over the weeks was that the left eye continued to get better and the right eye if anything got a slightly worse. Anyway its 6 weeks now and I believe I currently have better than 20/20 vision be not sure if its going to get better or worse as time progresses. The only side affect I have are dry eyes, I work in IT so looking at a computer all day doesn't help, this I am advised will return to normal over time but I will have to wait and see. I also am more short sighted than before the operation, something I didn't even know was a possible side affect, this 2 I am told will improve with time... Well advise is 1. Pick lasik with Wavefront, its currently the best procedure out today. 2. find the best consultant in the country to perform the operation, ask them what % of patients get 20:20 vision with your vision and what % get 20:10 or 20:30. Because I work in IT I spent a lot of time researching what technology is the best but only really realised that the surgeon plays just as big a role, after the operation. 3. Be prepared for some complication, be it dry eyes, not perfect vision, night vision problems 4. Over time your eyesight will change so if you 20:20 the day after the operation it don't mean you will be 20:20 a week or two down the road. 5. If your happy with all the above go for it, its still the best money I have spent...

I just had second consultation at Ultralase Cardiff where they have offered LASEK not LASIK due to my cornea being too thin. I am absolutely terrified as they will only correct one eye at a time and I worry I will be so uncomfortable I won't return for the second eye. I also don't understand the pricing as Optimax charge £495 per eye whereas Ultralase charge £995 per eye. BIG difference! Another fear is that they will not say which surgeon will perform the surgery so I can't research their background. Any advise please contact as I am in limbo trying to decide.

Following the comments I made on 8th Jan, a guy presumably from Head Office (he quoted an 0113 telephone number) emailed me. One sentence said "Whilst we aim to match a person's best corrected visual acuity with treatment, there are many occasions upon which we do improve on it" I replied on the 12th indicating I was very surprised by this fact that my best corrected vision could be improved upon, couldn't find anything on the internet to back this up, and asked him for some supporting evidence. As yet he has not replied, so I don't know whether he's on holiday, or that fact is just a myth. Can anyone clarify

I had my first eye operated on Friday 17th. I can't believe the result and although the eye does get tired and is still a bit tender, I am amazed at what I can see. Everyone was very helpful and I hope the next eye is just as successful.

I attended the Ultralase clinic in Chelmsford on Friday 24th January for a consultation. I must say, it was very thoroughly done, and I left feeling that their primary goal was patient care, rather than getting patients through the door for surgery. I was told that because of my right eye (-8.25), I was a borderline case for surgery, which was not really what I wanted to hear, but at least they were honest and straightforward with the facts. I am waiting to hear from Ultralase today, as they have referred my file to their chief surgeon, Mr Vinod Gupta, for his expert assessment. I also have another consultation with Optimax on Friday, and it will be interesting to see if they say the same things to me.

I've recently (16/01/03) visited the Ultralase clinic in Hammersmith for my suitability examination. I was treated very well & I felt that a through examination was undertaken even though I had a 7:40 pm appointment! I was told that I was a good candidate for surgery with a high chance of success in never having to wear glasses again! For the record I am about -5 in each eye, my corneal thickness is 560mc & my pupil size is 6.5mm. After a few days I received a follow-up phone call which gave me a good chance to ask some more questions that had occurred to me since then. When I had a question for the optician who'd examined me they even managed to get him on the phone for me there & then! After much consideration & worried thinking I've decided to go ahead with the treatment (Decided last week, operation is tomorrow!). I'll post a follow up reply after the op.

I've recently had laser eye treatment at Ultralase Leeds clinic. I have to say from my first enquiry about laser eye treatment all the way through to the follow up care I received after treatment Ultralase staff have treated me with the professionalism and dedication you would hope to find. I was very apprehensive about having laser eye treatment before contacting Ultralase. The whole process was explained to me down to the finest detail and every question I had was answered both honestly and accurately. They made me feel very much at ease about the procedure I was about to have. On the day of my treatment I was very nervous as you can imagine. From the moment I stepped into the clinic I was made welcome and every step was taken to ease my fears. The reception staff right through to the surgeon explained each stage I would go through. When you’re feeling nervous it really helps to hear a reassuring voice or two. I am a very keen sportsman, some of my friends would say football mad, and I hated the constant fiddling around with contact lenses before and after matches. The treatment has allowed me to throw away my contacts forever. If you’re thinking about having laser eye surgery I would definitely recommend giving Ultralase a call. They will answer all questions or reservations you have and you'll find the whole experience life changing.

Prescription prior to surgery -6.50 & -5.75. Vision not so good with contact lenses than with glasses, so decided to go try LASIK. Initial consultation very thorough but it was unsure if corneal thickness in my right eye was sufficient. After passing my file to Mr Gupta it was agreed that I was suitable for lasik. Operation on 8th November 2002, very scary but glad I went through with it. Prescription 3 months on -0.25 in both eyes and 6/5 vision. Need I say anymore. Best money ever spent. Thanks to all staff at Ultralase Chelmsford all very friendly and professional.

I've been wanting to get rid of my glasses for years! and could never really get on with contacts. The horror stories that went around put me off getting laser treatment. Now I wonder why I'd waited for so long !!. I did A LOT of research ,on the web , friends of friends of friends, and one name kept came up as highly recommended, so I went to Ultralase and specified treatment from Dr Vinod Gupta. The staff were really good and calming ,and the whole laser treatment took only ten mins. It is nerving when the first eye is done, as you do not know what is going to happen. The suction ring is uncomfortable, but not painfull, and I felt nothing else. The smell of the laser burning the eye was daunting, but when the next eye was done, I knew what to expect, so it was easier. An hour later I walked out of the clinic and was amazed how clear everything was. My eyes did feel gritty for the first day, and I did use the drops often, but this got better the next day. I've not really suffered from the halo effect at night, but when your eye-sight drops from -3.5 to 20/20 there's not much to complain about. The only real problem is that my eyes dry quickly, so I'm constantly using the eye-drops. I would recommend this to any one, but do your homework, as your eyes are not replaceable, to avoid average surgeons. OR use Dr Gupta, his reputation is well deserved..!!

I had wavefront guided Lasik at Accuvision four days ago. I had a mild short-sightedness and astigmatism. I am, so far, very happy with the results. Vision in my left eye is very good; vision in my right eye is better than it was but I'm hoping it will improve. I found the actual procedure extremely unpleasant and would not want to go through it again. Despite that the discomfort is short lived and I have no regrets. Post surgery I had no pain in one eye whilst the other was really quite sore with 'shooting pains'. I wouldn't really describe them as gritty, more prickly! I found the team pleasant and professional. However I agree with the comments posted regarding the rude receptionist, her attitude prior to surgery nearly prevented my going there. On the negative: I would have welcomed a sedative/anxiolytic beforehand (Accuvision won't let you have one). I would also have welcomed somewhere a little more private/comfortable to recover for the hour afterwards. When the operation was finished I felt very emotional and stressed - sitting in a busy waiting room with my eyes shut was disorientating and distressing. Overall I would go through it all again and would choose Accuvision.
