The first Ultralase clinic was opened in January 1991 at the Clatterbridge Hospital near Chester. At the time, all treatments performed were Photorefractive Keratotomy, or PRK, until the Lasik procedure was introduced in 1995.

With the introduction of Lasik, and the clear advantages it demonstrated for certain patients, Ultralase went through a period of dramatic growth through 2002.

2003 Ultralase introduced the revolutionary UltraPlus treatment with Wavefront technology, giving patients visual outcomes far surpassing those of standard laser treatments. Ultralase became the first provider to have all treatment outcomes verified by independent audit.

In March 2009, the commitment to clinical excellence led Ultralase to become the first UK provider to have all Great Britain surgeons certified in Laser Refractive Surgery by the Royal College of Ophthalmologists (RCOphth).

Ultralase Prices

Ultralase comes in second place in our list of the best laser eye surgery clinics in the UK for price, just after Optical Express. That’s because this clinic offers the full shebang: transparent prices, 0% finance options, free consultations, and competitive prices.

The cost of eye surgery at Ultralase ranges between £1,1695 and £2,995 (per eye), depending on the treatment type that you agree upon in discussion with a surgeon. These prices are in line with the average cost of eye surgery, but not quite as low as Optical Express.

Treatments Offered

You can count on Ultralase for the main laser eye and lens replacement surgery procedures. These include: LASIK and LASEK with Wavefront options, as well as refractive lens exchange (RLE), implantable contact lenses, and cataract surgery.

Is Ultralase Right for You?

With nearly 3,000 overall positive reviews from independent customers in the UK, Ultralase is one of the best-rated laser eye surgery clinics by patients. People value this clinic for its:

  • Friendly prices – Fixed and reasonable prices help you know what to expect.
  • Nationwide clinics – Ultralase has 20 clinics in the UK, including in London, Reading and St Albans.
  • Decent aftercare – Ultralase provides free aftercare – one check-up and drops for the first three months.

Despite glowing reviews, however, it’s worth reading the fine print if you do choose Ultralase. In 2015, BBC’s Watchdog exposed the problems countless laser eye surgery patients have experienced accessing their lifelong aftercare.

Most user reviews on Lasik Eyes show happy experiences, but then again most people never need to take advantage of their lifetime guarantee. If you would like to find out whether Ultralase is the top-rated laser eye surgery clinic near you, we’re here to help.

I am a very successful hairdresser with a large client base and a waiting list for appointments in Eastleigh, Hampshire. When I wanted to know more about Lasik I made endless enquiries with clinics, reading testimonials, and visiting websites. My decision to proceed with the treatment was not taken lightly. I had the treatment at the Guildford Clinic of Ultralase on the 10 Dec 2002. The treatment was as most people describe, quick, painless and effective almost immediately, but with the advised hazy mist which cleared overnight. The next day while having my first follow up check I was advised that I had an inflammation in one eye under the cornea and was issued suitable drops. I was asked to come the following day for another check-up. This carried on for 2 more days and then another visit on the following Monday. The staff were at all times efficient and thorough, and during these visits I was seen by the surgeon Mr Vinod Gupta, twice. On one occasion, he advised and carried out an "eye wash" where the cornea flap was lifted slightly and some cells which were causing the inflammation were washed out. I began to notice a marked improvement later that day in that eye and my sight has continued to improve since. On my last visit, my prescription was -0.25 in both eyes and it was felt that this will improve further having started with a prescription of -2.75 in both eyes and an acute astigmatism. I cannot recommend the staff and surgeon , Mr Gupta, at the Ultralase Clinic in Guildford highly enough. Yes people, things can happen, like inflammation and infection. But it was dealt with in a professional manner with all due care and attention and I am so very pleased that I was attending this clinic when the need arose.

It's been a month since my surgery and I just thought I'd post a quick note to update. I got my glasses out of their case for the last time today, and posted them off to the LCRS, where no doubt they will be sent to some poor person with eyes like mine used to be, or recycled. My vision is, at best, perfectly clear and at worst (when I'm tired) slightly blurry. I have not been to an opticians to get a new prescription, because I'm happy with my result. I am slightly curious, but not enough to book in for an appointment. I hope I'll never take my new eyesight for granted and if I do I only need to get out my old prescription to remember how bad they used to be!! Good luck for the 17th, Michelle. I hope all goes well. Keep updating.

I had laser surgery on both eyes in May 2002. My prescription was -5 in both eyes and I had worn specs and contacts lenses for 20 years. The consultation was thorough and they answered all of the many and varied questions I asked to my full satisfaction. They also carried out thorough tests before deciding that I was a suitable candidate for laser surgery. The service was friendly and professional. However, it was with a little trepidation that I signed the paperwork and agreed to the "risks" involved in surgery. Mr Vinod Gupta had carried out similar surgery on a friend who recommended him so I insisted that he carry out the surgery. The actual operation was painless, the most unpleasant experience being the burning smell when the laser was in use. After a restless night with streaming eyes which felt as though they were filled with grit. I had read other comments on the operation which said that there was slight discomfort but, in my opinion, this was an understatement. It was worth it in the morning when I opened my eyes and my vision was perfect. My eyes felt great. I was able to watch television, see objects in the distance clearly. It was a wonderful feeling. I have had several appointments since surgery to check up on my eyes and I still have 20/20 vision and have no problems with night vision or halos. I do experience, on rare occasions, a light in my left eye which travels from the top to bottom of the eye for a few seconds and then disappears. I've been advised that this has not happened as a result of surgery and that my eyes are healthy. If I do have any worries, I am free to call in and see an ophthalmologist. I would highly recommend this surgery to any one who is tired of the restrictions that poor sight brings and are sick of wearing specs and fiddling around with contact lenses. It's definitely worth it!!

I had my consultation with Ultralase at their brand new St Albans Clinic on Monday, and was very impressed. All of the staff were very pleasant and knowledgeable and the process was very thorough and efficient (and even the fact that I had to take my two children with me didn't seem to worry anyone!) I have astigmatism and long sight and have worn glasses for over 30 years. I been advised that I am a suitable candidate for treatment - so I'm booked in on 12 Feb! I will let you know how I get on.

Treated 3 January 2003 at Hammersmith by Mr Gupta. Prescription around -2.5 both eyes. Procedure very quick & painless. Some grittiness same night but next day excellent vision & no pain or discomfort at all. Almost 2wks on & vision better than 20/20 both eyes, although left is better than right. Eyes now feel absolutely normal & no dry eye or soreness. Have just stopped wearing the protective glasses & that's such a great feeling! Considered the treatment for several years before 'taking the plunge' & chose Ultralase Hammersmith as friend was treated there. All staff very pleasant & efficient. As my friend said - would like to recommend it unreservedly, but everyone is different & may not be as lucky as me. Friend still suffers with slight dry eye feeling 1 yr on but is still glad he had it done. I am certainly very pleased with the results so far, but look forward to my sight test in a couple of weeks when vision should be settled.

I had my first eye operated on Friday 17th. I can't believe the result and although the eye does get tired and is still a bit tender, I am amazed at what I can see. Everyone was very helpful and I hope the next eye is just as successful.

I've recently (16/01/03) visited the Ultralase clinic in Hammersmith for my suitability examination. I was treated very well & I felt that a through examination was undertaken even though I had a 7:40 pm appointment! I was told that I was a good candidate for surgery with a high chance of success in never having to wear glasses again! For the record I am about -5 in each eye, my corneal thickness is 560mc & my pupil size is 6.5mm. After a few days I received a follow-up phone call which gave me a good chance to ask some more questions that had occurred to me since then. When I had a question for the optician who'd examined me they even managed to get him on the phone for me there & then! After much consideration & worried thinking I've decided to go ahead with the treatment (Decided last week, operation is tomorrow!). I'll post a follow up reply after the op.

I've recently had laser eye treatment at Ultralase Leeds clinic. I have to say from my first enquiry about laser eye treatment all the way through to the follow up care I received after treatment Ultralase staff have treated me with the professionalism and dedication you would hope to find. I was very apprehensive about having laser eye treatment before contacting Ultralase. The whole process was explained to me down to the finest detail and every question I had was answered both honestly and accurately. They made me feel very much at ease about the procedure I was about to have. On the day of my treatment I was very nervous as you can imagine. From the moment I stepped into the clinic I was made welcome and every step was taken to ease my fears. The reception staff right through to the surgeon explained each stage I would go through. When you’re feeling nervous it really helps to hear a reassuring voice or two. I am a very keen sportsman, some of my friends would say football mad, and I hated the constant fiddling around with contact lenses before and after matches. The treatment has allowed me to throw away my contacts forever. If you’re thinking about having laser eye surgery I would definitely recommend giving Ultralase a call. They will answer all questions or reservations you have and you'll find the whole experience life changing.

Prescription prior to surgery -6.50 & -5.75. Vision not so good with contact lenses than with glasses, so decided to go try LASIK. Initial consultation very thorough but it was unsure if corneal thickness in my right eye was sufficient. After passing my file to Mr Gupta it was agreed that I was suitable for lasik. Operation on 8th November 2002, very scary but glad I went through with it. Prescription 3 months on -0.25 in both eyes and 6/5 vision. Need I say anymore. Best money ever spent. Thanks to all staff at Ultralase Chelmsford all very friendly and professional.

I've been wanting to get rid of my glasses for years! and could never really get on with contacts. The horror stories that went around put me off getting laser treatment. Now I wonder why I'd waited for so long !!. I did A LOT of research ,on the web , friends of friends of friends, and one name kept came up as highly recommended, so I went to Ultralase and specified treatment from Dr Vinod Gupta. The staff were really good and calming ,and the whole laser treatment took only ten mins. It is nerving when the first eye is done, as you do not know what is going to happen. The suction ring is uncomfortable, but not painfull, and I felt nothing else. The smell of the laser burning the eye was daunting, but when the next eye was done, I knew what to expect, so it was easier. An hour later I walked out of the clinic and was amazed how clear everything was. My eyes did feel gritty for the first day, and I did use the drops often, but this got better the next day. I've not really suffered from the halo effect at night, but when your eye-sight drops from -3.5 to 20/20 there's not much to complain about. The only real problem is that my eyes dry quickly, so I'm constantly using the eye-drops. I would recommend this to any one, but do your homework, as your eyes are not replaceable, to avoid average surgeons. OR use Dr Gupta, his reputation is well deserved..!!
