The first Ultralase clinic was opened in January 1991 at the Clatterbridge Hospital near Chester. At the time, all treatments performed were Photorefractive Keratotomy, or PRK, until the Lasik procedure was introduced in 1995.

With the introduction of Lasik, and the clear advantages it demonstrated for certain patients, Ultralase went through a period of dramatic growth through 2002.

2003 Ultralase introduced the revolutionary UltraPlus treatment with Wavefront technology, giving patients visual outcomes far surpassing those of standard laser treatments. Ultralase became the first provider to have all treatment outcomes verified by independent audit.

In March 2009, the commitment to clinical excellence led Ultralase to become the first UK provider to have all Great Britain surgeons certified in Laser Refractive Surgery by the Royal College of Ophthalmologists (RCOphth).

Ultralase Prices

Ultralase comes in second place in our list of the best laser eye surgery clinics in the UK for price, just after Optical Express. That’s because this clinic offers the full shebang: transparent prices, 0% finance options, free consultations, and competitive prices.

The cost of eye surgery at Ultralase ranges between £1,1695 and £2,995 (per eye), depending on the treatment type that you agree upon in discussion with a surgeon. These prices are in line with the average cost of eye surgery, but not quite as low as Optical Express.

Treatments Offered

You can count on Ultralase for the main laser eye and lens replacement surgery procedures. These include: LASIK and LASEK with Wavefront options, as well as refractive lens exchange (RLE), implantable contact lenses, and cataract surgery.

Is Ultralase Right for You?

With nearly 3,000 overall positive reviews from independent customers in the UK, Ultralase is one of the best-rated laser eye surgery clinics by patients. People value this clinic for its:

  • Friendly prices – Fixed and reasonable prices help you know what to expect.
  • Nationwide clinics – Ultralase has 20 clinics in the UK, including in London, Reading and St Albans.
  • Decent aftercare – Ultralase provides free aftercare – one check-up and drops for the first three months.

Despite glowing reviews, however, it’s worth reading the fine print if you do choose Ultralase. In 2015, BBC’s Watchdog exposed the problems countless laser eye surgery patients have experienced accessing their lifelong aftercare.

Most user reviews on Lasik Eyes show happy experiences, but then again most people never need to take advantage of their lifetime guarantee. If you would like to find out whether Ultralase is the top-rated laser eye surgery clinic near you, we’re here to help.

Had surgery in my left eye on 18 October and was amazed at how quick and painless it was. Very little pain experienced the next day, though eyelid very swollen, and I was very nauseous. Had it tested Wednesday after and eye tested at -0.75 (was previously -5.00) and still had a slight astigmatism which meant everything was a bit blurry, but two weeks after the surgery it had regressed to -1.75. Apparently my eye healed too well? I'm not sure how this works, but it does mean I will have to have follow up surgery to that eye in three months, and I cannot read with the eye. I was warned this might be necessary, but it is annoying all the same. I will have to get new glasses made up for that eye in the meantime. It has been difficult during the three weeks since, mainly because I had to wear a contact lens in my right eye, which I am not used to, so I have struggled at work, especially looking at a computer. As I am now within 5 days of my second eye op, I cannot wear the lens, so I am having to wear my glasses with the left lens covered (there is too much of a difference between my eyes to simply take out the left glasses lens). Second op is on 15th November. Hoping for a better result this time - will have a very difficult time of it next week if its not!

its been a week today since my treatment. I am still wearing my glasses, but have taken my lens out of the left side of my glasses. This balances my sight a lot better, My eyesight is better in the mornings than at night. Still using the eye drops, which sometimes sting, but overall I am still really pleased. Hope all goes well with your treatment, Linda.

I had bilateral LASIK treatment on the 21 December 2001 at Ultralase Hammersmith clinic, the surgeon was Mr Gupta. My eyes were -5.00 and -5.75 with a degree of astigmatism, the exact amount I cannot remember, I was 38 at the time of treatment. When I had my pre-op assessment my pupil size and corneal thicknesses were found to be OK as far as the LASIK procedure requires it to be (it would have been interesting to have been told just what the measurements were). I received no pushy sales pitch and the atmosphere was relaxed, almost casual. The emphasis was on "playing down" rather than "hyping up" my chances of having post-op perfect vision, but my questions were well dealt with and I was sent off with all the required information to consider in order to make up my own mind about my options. I decided to go ahead with the procedure partly on the basis that I could see that their track record with the Technolas 217c laser were good and that they had some very experienced staff. Come the big day I was extra lucky to get Mr Gupta how has amassed a very significant amount of experience as a refractive surgeon and latterly as a LASIK practitioner. I was not so much nervous as fascinated. The micro-surgery was hitch free, although the suction on the eye was uncomfortable-but necessary. The laser application only odd in that you can smell a slight burning smell! My flaps were floated back in place and there were no difficulties such as wrinkling or poor adhesion. I waited in reception for 30 minutes with my eyes shut before Mr Gupta had a look and pronounced that I would not need contact eye shielding. My sight was poor at this stage and very light sensitive, the fact that tears streamed down my fact was a good sign, if they didn't it would have been a bit odd! Next morning after a peaceful night I looked out of the window and I had at least 20/20 vision. That was confirmed at the next day follow-up at Ultralase. One week on the day time vision was getting better all the time although I did notice that I was a bit Long sighted and low light level acuity was poor, I also had halos around high pressure sodium street lights. All this was normal and would, with time, improve I was told. This was a correct prediction as my sight steadily improved as recorded at the one and the final 6 month post-op follow up consultations at Ultralase. I would say that almost one year on I have possibly 20/15 eye sight, but not "super vision" or 20/10-8 eye sight. Would I have had this level of visual acuity if I had been custom treated with moving Wavefront diagnosis? I can't say. However, I do think that a lot depends on the competency of the practitioner. No matter how good the laser is, in terms of its power of resolution and its active eye tracking system, if the stromal surface of the cornea to be ablated has been poorly prepared there will not be a good, and possibly a very poor result. Mr Gupta at Ultralase was perfectly competent so a good result was reasonably predictable. My only residual concerns are for the future, will my eyes be affected by as yet to be documented side effects due to the thinning of the cornea and will the flap maintain its adhesion and fully heal with time? No one can know at this stage. My view is that if you have good health, thick corneas and a competent surgeon using up to date technology and techniques the risk is acceptable.

Had my consultation this morning and all questions dealt with. Very professional and realistic. I am keen to go ahead only worried about coping 4 weeks with one eye, how are you managing Angela?

after having my left eye treated at the above clinic on 1st Nov., I can say I am really pleased with my result. It is not perfect, but my prescription was -6.5 and my sight is getting better each day. no pain, which I am grateful of, and can't wait to get my other eye treated so I can perhaps wander around without specs

Hello, I am looking into having LASIK performed by Ultralase. The nearest clinic to me is St Albans, Hertfordshire, but I have not read any comments re this centre. Has anyone any feedback regarding this clinic? Thanks

Had my consultation today. Very friendly and answered all my questions. I have very thick corneas (560 microns) but have large pupils (7-7.5mm) and they told me that there is a good chance of night time problems. If anybody has had surgery with large pupils, please let me know your findings. I will not go ahead until I have researched this more. Thanks.

I had my treatment at Tottenham Court Road in London, on Friday 11 October. I was treated by Dr Pascal Annonier, who was very calm and reassuring. I was a straightforward myopia case (-4 in both eyes) and it was confirmed the morning after the treatment and again yesterday (11 days after) that I now have 6/5 vision which is excellent. I have to check whether my night vision is not as good, but it has not occurred to me yet. The first few hours after the operation I was very light sensitive, but the next day my eyes already felt almost normal. Service at Ultralase is in general fine; especially on the day itself there were some very friendly nurses who 'talked me through'. I still have dry eyes in the morning and my eyes overcompensate that by tearing/crying for 2-3 minutes and a burning sensation, but apart from that everything's fine. Looking forward to taking of the protection glasses, but obviously care still needs to be taken for the next couple of weeks.

I've got my consultation next week with Ultralase after hearing good reports from friends. I've scoured the web (this is an excellent site BTW) for information and have turned up a few things. I have read that up to 49% of all LASIK patients have reduced night time vision afterwards. Is this true? This is extremely important and may stop me having the treatment. Thanks.

I HAD BILATERAL SURGERY ON MARCH 6TH 200O BY ANNUPAM CHATTERJEE FOR SEVERE MYOPIA. ABSOLUTELY DISASTROUS. I HAVE EXTREMELY LARGE PUPILS AND NOW KNOW I WAS IN A THE VERY HIGH RISK GROUP FOR LOW LIGHT VISION PROBLEMS. NOW I CANNOT SEE WELL ENOUGH TO EVEN DRIVE AT NIGHT OR EVEN IN THE DAY WHEN LIGHT IS POOR --THIS IS DUE TO SEVERE FLARING/HALOES. THE PUPIL SIZE ISSUE (WHICH I UNDERSTAND IS A STANDARD ONE FOR DISCUSSION BY LASIK SURGEONS WITH THEIR PATIENTS) WAS EITHER NOT PICKED UP BY THE SURGEON OR HE CHOSE TO IGNORE IT. NO DISCUSSION OVER CONSENT FORM--WHICH WAS OVERTLY MISLEADING ANYWAY--AND TOO MUCH MATERIAL WAS TAKEN FROM CORNEAS MAKING FURTHER SURGERY VERY RISKY---A WORD OF WARNING-IF ANYONE IS CONSIDERING LASIK THEY MUST HAVE AN INDEPENDENT EYE EXAM/ RISK ASSESSMENT DONE BY A SURGEON WHO WILL NOT BENEFIT FINANCIALLY FROM THE PROCEDURE.
