The first Ultralase clinic was opened in January 1991 at the Clatterbridge Hospital near Chester. At the time, all treatments performed were Photorefractive Keratotomy, or PRK, until the Lasik procedure was introduced in 1995.

With the introduction of Lasik, and the clear advantages it demonstrated for certain patients, Ultralase went through a period of dramatic growth through 2002.

2003 Ultralase introduced the revolutionary UltraPlus treatment with Wavefront technology, giving patients visual outcomes far surpassing those of standard laser treatments. Ultralase became the first provider to have all treatment outcomes verified by independent audit.

In March 2009, the commitment to clinical excellence led Ultralase to become the first UK provider to have all Great Britain surgeons certified in Laser Refractive Surgery by the Royal College of Ophthalmologists (RCOphth).

Ultralase Prices

Ultralase comes in second place in our list of the best laser eye surgery clinics in the UK for price, just after Optical Express. That’s because this clinic offers the full shebang: transparent prices, 0% finance options, free consultations, and competitive prices.

The cost of eye surgery at Ultralase ranges between £1,1695 and £2,995 (per eye), depending on the treatment type that you agree upon in discussion with a surgeon. These prices are in line with the average cost of eye surgery, but not quite as low as Optical Express.

Treatments Offered

You can count on Ultralase for the main laser eye and lens replacement surgery procedures. These include: LASIK and LASEK with Wavefront options, as well as refractive lens exchange (RLE), implantable contact lenses, and cataract surgery.

Is Ultralase Right for You?

With nearly 3,000 overall positive reviews from independent customers in the UK, Ultralase is one of the best-rated laser eye surgery clinics by patients. People value this clinic for its:

  • Friendly prices – Fixed and reasonable prices help you know what to expect.
  • Nationwide clinics – Ultralase has 20 clinics in the UK, including in London, Reading and St Albans.
  • Decent aftercare – Ultralase provides free aftercare – one check-up and drops for the first three months.

Despite glowing reviews, however, it’s worth reading the fine print if you do choose Ultralase. In 2015, BBC’s Watchdog exposed the problems countless laser eye surgery patients have experienced accessing their lifelong aftercare.

Most user reviews on Lasik Eyes show happy experiences, but then again most people never need to take advantage of their lifetime guarantee. If you would like to find out whether Ultralase is the top-rated laser eye surgery clinic near you, we’re here to help.

I wore contact lenses from the age of 16 and hated it. The hassle of cleaning them, carrying all the solutions around and then getting sore eyes when I was tired was driving me mad. I had my consultation and treatment with Ultralase in January this year. The consultation was very thorough and every question I had was answered clearly and concisely. The treatment itself takes only 20 minutes and it is amazing to think that I now have 20/20 vision! I chose Ultralase because I had heard so many good things about their service and their experience. It is all true - everyone is so friendly, polite and professional and I can't stop talking about it even 11 months later! I was treated at the central London clinic.

I had my initial consultation at the beginning of May. Because I had been wearing gas permeable lenses for approx 25 years, my eyes were slightly 'out of shape'. I was also told that my cornea was border line on thickness. I was advised to leave my lenses out for at least 6 weeks to enable my eyes to return to their normal shape which I did. I returned at the beginning of August and was told that my eyes were in much better state and I was a suitable candidate although I could still have a slight under correction due to the thickness of the cornea. My original prescription was -7 in both eyes. I have to say that through all these consultations the Guildford clinic were very thorough , honest and bore no pressure. At this stage they also advised that they were also undertaking LASEK treatment which may give me a better outcome, but after explaining the procedure I was not totally convinced that this was for me. Anyway, finally on the 5th November (2 weeks ago) I underwent the LASIK treatment and I can honestly say that I am 'blown away' with the outcome. Mr Gupta was the surgeon and on the day all the staff at Guildford were excellent. I felt really at ease; they went through all the procedure beforehand and explained everything that was happening as it was performed. When I came out from under the laser I could actually read the time from the clock on the wall which was something I would never have been able to do beforehand! Initially I had a little inflammation in both eyes which was not visible but picked up in my consultation 24 hours later. Anti inflammation drops treated this and by the Friday my eyes were clear. Although I have not yet had a proper eye test I was able to read the 20/20 vision line on the wall apart from one letter. I will be returning on the 3rd December for my next check up. For me the outcome has been excellent bearing in mind that I was expecting a slight under correction and I can only commend Mr Gupta on his excellence. I can highly recommend the Guildford clinic, especially Keith and Corinne the Opthalmists who have been fair, honest and totally professional throughout. The level of customer service has been high. I am now totally boring in my recommendation - long may my sight be as good as it is now. Thanks Ultralase.

Had second op three days ago and am extremely pleased. It was a bit more painful than the first - a lot of watering throughout the evening following and the morning after, but, miraculously just before lunch time the watering stopped, the redness disappeared and the swelling went down - and I could read the small print on the signage on the other side of the field at Twickenham Stadium (which brought tears to my eyes - tears of joy that is!) The eye still feels scratchy when I blink, but I experienced that last time and its goes away pretty quickly, just need to keep the eye wet with artificial tears so it doesn't dry out. Angela - glasses are gone! I did have an optician appointment made for today as I was so sure that I would need them to look at the computer - mainly for my left eye, but even though that is still a bit short sighted (-1.00 when measured on Friday), the two eyes together are working great. Distance viewing is not as good today as it was on Saturday, but I expect it will continue to fluctuate over the next few weeks. All in all at the moment I am extremely glad I did it - whereas two weeks ago I was having severe regrets! I would definitely say it has been a success, and it will only get better once the left eye is redone. Angela, let me know how you go with your second eye.

Leeds Clinic - Treatment May 2001 I was very nervous about undergoing LASIK but reassured by talking to friends who had already been treated with good results. Leeds clinic was busy but very professional and I felt under no pressure to proceed. The process itself was, as promised, painless and the same evening I had great vision. The aftercare is a bit of a chore but doesn't last long. Now more than eighteen months on I still enjoy the fact that I never have to remember where my specs are!

2 weeks since my op. My eye has healed very well, I've stopped using the eye drops now. I've had no pain, but my eye does water sometimes, especially on bright, sunny mornings, which makes driving awkward. I will mention this when I next visit the clinic (29th Nov). I've noticed a definite fluctuation in focusing range, very good in the morning, but quite poor at night. Hope this settles down. I've spent the past 2 weeks winking at everything to check the very big difference in my 'new' eye and my 'bad' eye, which has been a great source of amusement for my work colleagues. I hope your op has been a success, Michelle, have you now been able to get rid of your glasses?

I first read about LASIK in 1994 and thought it would be a last resort for me should my eyes deteriorate, I tried other natural ways of maintaining my sight, non has given me the dramatic improvements to my sight that I now enjoy from the treatment I received at Ultralase. From the first contact everything has been carried out in a relaxed yet professional manner with client comfort being paramount.

I had LASIK in 1997 by Mr Paul Cherry in Leeds (even then I think he had done about 100 LASIK operations). 5 years later still no problems (touch wood). I did not have bilateral treatment as this seemed just too risky. 15 minutes after the operation on my second eye. The flap came loose! Went back into have it put back in place, then 5 minutes later it came loose again. Eventually on the third attempt it stayed in place (by this time he was considering putting a stitch in my eye to keep the flap in place!). Short term effects of this were a lot of pain for 24hrs. Long term effects - probably slight poorer vision. I think the main thing is to have an experienced surgeon, so if there is a complication, there's a good chance he can overcome it.

I only started wearing glasses at 24 and could not get used to wearing contact lenses. I really wanted to have the surgery as I hated wearing glasses. I chose Ultralase as the consultation was carried very thorough and everything was explained to clearly and nothing was left out. There was no pressure and was left with me to call back and book a suitable date. I was so keen to have it done that I came with a date in mind. So I booked straight away.

I had my treatment carried out at the Hammersmith clinic. I've gone from -2 and an astigmatism to having 6/4 vision within 48 hours in both eyes so there's not much more I can say on that other than I CAN SEE. The staff were all friendly and professional and the nurses really reassured me as I was shaking like a leaf before treatment. The surgeon answered all my questions. Now having my aftercare in the Chelmsford clinic and the they are good as well. The main thing is obviously the results but having friendly and reassuring staff really made things better for me. They told me all about the procedure and this made me understand what was happening and not panic. Have already recommended them and a friend is due for treatment in Chelmsford next week . If anyone wants to email feel free.

I had surgery at the Manchester clinic with Dr Chaterjee over a month ago now. I'm fairly pleased with the results. I had an eye infection the other week and felt that the clinic took me seriously and I received a high standard of care. My vision is not perfect, but certainly an improvement on before and so far (touch wood), I'm happy with the outcome. I do have very dry eyes and that has also been a bit of a problem. My only other gripe is that until my infection, I saw a different consultant every single time.
