As well as treating patients, he now trains younger surgeons in this field. Here is his timeline to date:
- 1991: Consultant at the Altnagelvin Area Hospital in Derry
- 1992: Founder of AllClear, an independent laser refractive surgery provider
- 1992: One of the first surgeons in the UK to perform photorefractive keratectomy (PRK)
- 1995: Consultant at the Mater Hospital in Belfast
Mr Kervick has been performing laser eye surgery since 1998. He became a Consultant in 1991, and is currently a Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon at the Mater Hospital in Cork.
Known for his work in treating cataracts, Mr Kervick specialises in a specific style of vision correction called phacoemulsification. This involves performing cataract surgery using a tiny incision on the eye surface (cornea) using an excimer laser.
With anaesthetic eye drops alone, the surgeon is able to insert folding intraocular lenses. And the Mater Private Hospital prides itself on offering premium multifocal lenses.
For those not suitable for this type of treatment (perhaps due to age limits or complex eye prescriptions), Mr Kervick also provides refractive lens exchange (RLE), also known as clear lens extraction.
