Mr David Allamby specialises in LASIK, LASEK, Conductive Keratoplasty (CK) and other laser eye treatments at Focus Clinic, which he himself founded, and where he now works as the medical director.

Mr Allamby also happened to be the first surgeon in the UK to perform CK for long-sightedness (presbyopia), helping to free his patients from reading glasses. He also stands out as one of the only laser eye surgeons in the UK to focus solely on refractive laser treatment full-time, making him a leader in this field.

For these reasons and many more, David Allamby sits proudly in the list of the 10 top laser eye surgeons in the UK, based on thousands of patient reviews on Lasik Eyes since 2002.

1. Qualifications

Mr David Allamby, FRCS(Ed), FRCOphth graduated from Sheffield University Medical School in 1987, and has specialised in ophthalmic surgery since 1989. He became a fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, and then a fellow of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists in 1993.

David Allamby has worked at some of the United Kingdom’s leading eye centres, including Moorfields Eye Hospital in London and the Manchester Royal Eye Hospital.

As you would expect from a leading laser eye surgeon, Mr Allamby has published work – in ocular scar formation – whilst at the University of Manchester, which received funding from the prestigious Wellcome Trust grant.

2. Experience

Mr Allamby peforms the main types of laser eye surgery: LASIK and LASEK laser eye treatment, and CK radio eye correction – an innovative treatment for age-related vision issues – using state-of-the-art technology.

He works closely with each of his patients to determine which procedure most suits them, believing in the importance of his clients’ active participation through a process of full informed consent, so they can decide together which option is best.

In addition to clocking up more than 3,000 LASIK and LASEK laser surgeries to date, Mr Allamby has performed over 2,000 CK radio eye treatments, as well as providing CK surgery training to visiting consultants from countries around the world.

His particular expertise lies in the enhanced ‘light touch’ CK technique (a technique now adopted as standard by surgeons across the globe), which he partly pioneered at FOCUS Laser Vision and has more experience in than any other doctor in the world.

As a thought leader, David also runs a new informational blog for anyone wanting to learn more about LASIK and PRK laser eye surgery. It includes general information for UK patients, polling on key topics (currently on LASIK prices), informational videos and PDFs including watching live LASIK eye surgery and of course the opportunity to post your replies to blog topics, ask questions and request blog postings on subjects of interest.

3. Focus Clinic

Mr Allamby is the Chief Surgeon at Focus Clinic, a renowned Harley Street eye clinic. Focus enjoys a reputation as the go-to for celebrities, and claims of a 99.7% success rate for standard surgeries.

What makes it different? As you would expect from any independent eye clinic, it’s the consultants who led Focus Clinics, which means you’re unlikely to face hard sales strategies to use particular equipment, or accept a specific treatment.

Is there anything to look out for? As always, when choosing the right laser eye surgery provider for you, you don’t need to feel pressured into paying than you are comfortable with. With no finance options, and some of the highest laser eye surgery costs, this clinic won’t be for everyone.

4. Mr David Allamby Review: The Verdict

So, is Mr Allamby the right eye surgeon for you? Of course, that all depends on where you live, which treatment would suit your prescription, and what your budget is.

David Allamby is the medical director of one of the best laser eye surgery clinics in London, so if you live in the capital you may like to arrange an initial consultation with him to discuss your options.

That said, you’ll find cheaper laser and lens replacement costs elsewhere. If your optometrist diagnoses you with uncomplicated eye health, common procedures such as LASIK have a high success rate wherever you go, so you don’t have to feel pressured into paying more than you would like.

The people at Focus are just beyond accomodating, really great staff. I wasn't nervous about the procedure, probably should have been, but if I was then the service and kind staff would have been enough to put me at my ease. The procedure is quick and painless - a little stressful (as eye surgery would be no matter where you get it done) but certainly no pain. Have recommended the clinic to all that have enquired about my treatment. Thank you to all at Focus.

I'm absolutely delighted with the results. My vision was perfect within an hour of leaving the clinic. I'm generally a bit of a wimp and so was very nervous about surgery but everyone put me at ease and it was over in a flash (8 minutes). It was not painful although it was a bit uncomfortable. Everyone was very friendly and professional and made me feel relaxed and the level of personal attention was great. I felt like an individual unlike so many other health care experiences.A really great experience, I have been telling everyone I know how great it is and thoroughly recommend this clinic to anyone.

I had my surgery only yesterday afternoon and today, at my 1st check-up, I have better than 20:20 vision! The surgery itself was uncomfortable but not agony and was over in less than 10 minutes. Immediately after I could see brilliantly! I did have a fair amount of stinging and watering but after taking everyone's advice to have a nap when I got home, after only 1.5 hours of sleep they were dramatically better. And today? Well, it feels like I have a pair of dry lenses in, and even that feeling is diminishing as the hours pass. But best of all, everything is crystal clear!I cannot recommend Focus Laser Vision highly enough. From the really friendly lady on reception (I'm sorry, I never got your name!) to Ritu and Malisa, to Agnes who goes through the drops and to Mr Allamby himself and his lovely helpers actually during surgery - all wonderful! No pressure, just really friendly people who want the best for you. No hard-sell - in fact my surgery was delayed for a couple of weeks because of a slight inflammation - they wanted to ensure it had cleared up before surgery.I was thinking about surgery for 5 years before I plucked up the courage to do it. If you're the same, visit the lovely people at Focus Laser Vision - they'll really put your mind at rest without making you feel that you have to book this minute. Thoroughly, totally, completely recommended!

Less than one day after surgery I have near perfect vision and I cannot praise Mr Allamby and his team enough, from the initial consultation through to surgery everyone involved shown a high level of care and commitment and I would not hesitate in recommending them. The blending procedure I had was quick and painless this was performed at 11am and afterwards went back to the hotel for a sleep.Having had 2-3 hours rest I went to a restaurant where I was not only able to read from the menu but also the tiny ingredients on the sachets of condiments.Anybody thinking of this procedure book a consultation you will be glad you did. Many many thanks to all.

Glad to have got rid of the varifocal glasses.Thank you for all the professional guidance I received before and after the surgery.

I underwent the Z-Kamra procedure at Focus Clinics a couple of months ago and it has far exceeded all my expectations. I had the combination of the insertion of the Kamra Inlay to deal with my presbyopia (reading vision) and laser correction for my myopia (short sight). I now have a near vision of J1 (the bottom line of the reading chart) and see 20/12 (I’m told that’s better than 20/20).The care, dedication and expertise before, during and after the procedure have been exceptional. I am most grateful to Mr Allamby and the Focus team. The treatment has given me a new confidence and freedom that for me was unobtainable with glasses and contact lenses.I would go through it all again tomorrow without the slightest hesitation.Thank you so much.

Helpful, pleasant, considerate and thoughtful staff, particularly Joanne on reception, who is exceptional! The whole ethos of this place is based on client-care and customer-satisfaction. I really can't fault them - absolutely excellent. By the way, getting rid of my glasses and being able to read/sew etc is FANTASTIC too!

I had Z-Lasik to both eyes 6 weeks ago and have just been for my monthly check up. Extremely positive experience with Focus and Dave Allamby and his team. Very professional and slick set up. Procedure itself was quick and mildly disconcerting, but by no means painful. Eyes were sore initially once the meds wore off, but anaesthetic drops helped and by the evening I could watch TV comfortably. Some dryness over the first month, but now my eyes are absolutely fine and vision is excellent - 2 lines better than 20/20 (20/12 ?) I got a great deal with a discount voucher, but even without, would thoroughly recommend Focus to anyone thinking about Laser eye surgery.

The atmosphere in the clinic is relaxed and helpful. This new technique was clearly explained, and even demonstrated. The surgery was almost painless, just a little discomfort when pressure had to be applied, and the results immediate. Within 24 hours both eyes were painfree, and my distance vision near perfect.3 months later and my distance vision is better than 20/20 and I now have my peripheral vision back! My reading improved sharply in the first week and noticeably more after one month - no more glasses needed for work (i.e. using a computer). It's very easy to take it all for granted, like I did years ago, so I have to remember what a pain glasses are - how they pinch and get dirty so quickly - to appreciate not having them anymore.Definietly recommend the procedure.

Everyone at Focus could not have been more helpful and reassuring. The operation went extremely well and the results have beyond my expectations. I would recommend Focus to anyone and only wish I had my eyes done years ago
