Mr Alexander C W Ionides Reviews
I can’t recommend Alex Ionides and Moorfields Eye Hospital highly enough. The hospital itself has the best staff, equipment and surgery; and Alex was fantastic from the start to the end of the process. He is both highly qualified and extremely empathetic. Most importantly he was also extremely impressive in the operating room. I have just had my 6 month check-in and my sight is better than 20.20. Thank you Alex and team!
I am very happy that I no longer have to wear contacts/ glasses which I have done since I was 16. Mr Ionides was very informative and put my mind at ease. The procedure itself was completely painless and well organised.
I would highly recommend Mr Ionides and his team to anyone looking to have their eyesight corrected.
I have worn glasses since I was 11 and at 57, was very shortsighted with a strong astigmatism, -11/50 / -10.50 astigmatism +5.50 / +4.00. I had previously been told that I was not suitable for laser surgery due to my thin corneas. I heard about lens replacement and started looking at my options. I considered one of the high street chains but was not left feeling confident after a consultation, my main concern was not having any personal contact with the consultant doing the surgery. Given that you only have one pair of eyes, I decided to pay for a consultation at Moorfields. Mr Ionides considered all aspects of my sight and instead of opting for trying to correct all aspects of my vision with lens replacement, offered a combination lens replacement with Lasik surgery. He took time to explain in detail every aspect and what I could expect. I wasn’t promised being glasses free but there was a good chance. The lens replacement surgery itself was pain free though a did have a headache the next day, manageable with pain relief. The amazing experience of waking up the next day and being able to see out of one eye is difficult to describe but made everything worthwhile. The aftercare was exemplary, as well as scheduled follow up appointments with Mr Ionides, I had his email address and was able to contact him at any time if needed. I took advantage of this and he either came back with an answer or arranged an additional appointment to see me. Recovery from the Lasik took longer than the lens replacement and has taken over 6 months for my vision to settle, long distance is 20/20 though I do need glasses for close up reading only. I would have no hesitation in recommending Moorfields, and Mr Ionides – you get what you pay for and in this case, you are paying for specialist consultants at the top of their game and the best level of care and after care available
Mr. Ionides came highly recommended to me by his peers at Moorfield Eye Hospital, so I was very happy of the opportunity to have him as my eye surgeon. The service was extremely professional throughout and I felt in safe hands at all times.
Following my initial eye examination I was advised based on the thinness of my cornea to go for the LASEK as opposed to LASIK. The surgery itself was quick (10mins) and pain free. The aftercare included a list of different eye drops which kept me comfortable while my eyes healed, two to three weeks. I was able to function normally everyday within three days of surgery and as long as you stick to the routine of applying the eye drops there was no real discomfort. I could see the difference in my vision within day one though blurred at times and now two months later I have almost perfect eyesight which I am told will keep improving.
I recommend to anyone who has struggled with poor eyesight to have Laser eye surgery and consult with Mr. Ionides who is a highly experienced and professional surgeon.
Last month I had lens replacement surgery to correct the myopia and astigmatism in my eyes after 40+ years of wearing glasses. Right from the get go, Mr Alex Ionides was very caring and empathetic, taking the time to answer all of my questions (even if they may have been asked more than once!) very patiently, efficiently and in good humour. He immediately put me at ease and on both days of the surgery, I had 100% trust and faith in his expertise and abilities. I felt very comfortable throughout. Since the surgery, I’m so happy with my near and distance vision and being free from wearing glasses. It was a bit weird between the surgeries, having one eye seeing perfectly and the other having blurred vision so I didn’t drive very much, but this is all explained in advance. I’m so glad that I had the surgery and am thankful to Alex. I knew wholeheartedly that I was in the best hands. If you want the best in every respect, Alex Ionides is the surgeon for you.
I have recommended Alex to multiple people who have all had similar very positive experiences. Within an hour of having the surgery I could for the first time in my life read the small print on my phone. The surgery was pain free and only took around 5 mins per eye. I was 40 years old at the time of the operation.
One eye which had a high stigmatism had to be done twice, this was within the originial price of the surgery. Once I had 20/20 vision I then had other surgery to straighten a lazy eye. No professional had every suggested that I have laser eye surgery to correct my vision before operating on a lazy eye. Seems the most logical approach.
Alex has really good interpersonal skills, highly professional and I could not recommend him or the operation more highly. It was totally life changing. Thank you.

I had LASEK eye surgery in April 2017 by Alexander Ionides (I did not qualify for LASIK as my corneas were too thin). My prep appointments at Moorfields hospital were very helpful and clarified many questions. The procedure itself was painless, very quick and I felt completely at ease. I had no pain afterwards but, as expected, vision was blurry for a few days, during which period I could also not read any books or from a computer screen. After a week my vision had recovered substantially and has been improving further during the months since (one eye now has 6/6 vision, the other 6/4.8, which is even better). Throughout the process, dr. Ionides has been extremely helpful, friendly and always responded very quickly to questions/emails etc. Highly recommended!
I had Lasek surgery about 7 months ago and it was the best decision I made. Mr Ionides was fantastic. I was very apprehensive about having surgery on my eyes but Mr Ionides soon put me at ease about the procedure. He answered all of my questions honestly and I came away from the consultation assured that I was doing the right thing. On the day of the surgery, I was so nervous to a point where I was almost panicking but Mr Ionides and his team were so reassuring and took such great care of me that I soon relaxed and I wasn’t worried because I knew I was in very good hands. I would highly recommend Mr Ionides and Moorfields Eye Hospital to anyone considering Laser Eye Surgery. It may be more expensive but paying that little extra gives you that reassurance that you are in safe hands and you are being taken good care of.
After nearly 17 years of wearing contact lenses, my corneas decided they’d had enough of too little oxygen and being squashed by thick pieces of plastic that *still* didn’t give me great vision and rewarded me with two bad eye infections within 6 months. I switched over to dailies which were expensive and troublesome and also had to switch between glasses and contact lenses constantly as I couldn’t wear contacts for more than 8 hours per day.
I’m a -11 prescription in both eyes, and my glasses made my eyes look tiny. Getting them thinned was hugely costly and they still didn’t look great. And so started my refractive eye surgery journey.
I work for a consumer charity and saw that Moorfield Eye Hospital was rated highly across pre-operative, operative and post-operative care. I tried a few high street chains but felt they were pushy.
I looked up surgeons on the Moorfields website and the first person I came across was Dr Ionides. I saw that he performs cataract surgery and teaches others to perform the surgery. That gave me confidence as the surgery I had is a bit more invasive than LASIK.
As soon as I called, his PA Leigh McEvoy put me straight at ease. I booked my appointment and was subjected to vigorous eye tests. I was informed of the risks and complications. I was fully informed.
I was told I wasn’t eligible for LASIK, but I was eligible for Implantable Contact Lenses.
I’m a bit of a worrier, so I did thorough research on the procedure. I looked at medical papers and journals on safety, efficacy and trends in clinical outcomes of the procedure across the world. Before I even booked the surgery, Dr Ionides’ response to my worries and concerns made me see I had absolutely chosen the right surgeon. Never once did I feel obligated to book. He discussed the papers with me and reassured me that the procedure was safe and that I would continue to be monitored at Moorfields.
Throughout the whole process, Dr Ionides has been wonderful. A great character, he has been calming, reassuring, professional and gave me confidence in the procedure from start to finish. His aftercare has been second to none – he’s always happy to see me if I have any problems (I had slightly raised eye pressures after the procedure which is normal) and he saw me every week until they started to reduce.
Dr Ionides is a world-class surgeon working at a world-class medical institution. While pricer than other places, you get what you pay for and this procedure has been worth every penny. My eyes are still healing after 5 months, but my vision is fantastic. My life is completely different and I’ve got a freedom I never thought possible. I can’t say thank you enough to Dr Ionides and his team.
The care before, during and after was excellent and the surgery was amazing.
I can now see perfectly after 30 years of glasses and lenses and I do not need reading glasses.
The surgery was completely pain free and the discomfort after was minimal due to the drops that were provided.
I would recommend the clinic and Mr Ionides to anyone, my daughter has already had her sight corrected by him.
