The first Ultralase clinic was opened in January 1991 at the Clatterbridge Hospital near Chester. At the time, all treatments performed were Photorefractive Keratotomy, or PRK, until the Lasik procedure was introduced in 1995.

With the introduction of Lasik, and the clear advantages it demonstrated for certain patients, Ultralase went through a period of dramatic growth through 2002.

2003 Ultralase introduced the revolutionary UltraPlus treatment with Wavefront technology, giving patients visual outcomes far surpassing those of standard laser treatments. Ultralase became the first provider to have all treatment outcomes verified by independent audit.

In March 2009, the commitment to clinical excellence led Ultralase to become the first UK provider to have all Great Britain surgeons certified in Laser Refractive Surgery by the Royal College of Ophthalmologists (RCOphth).

Ultralase Prices

Ultralase comes in second place in our list of the best laser eye surgery clinics in the UK for price, just after Optical Express. That’s because this clinic offers the full shebang: transparent prices, 0% finance options, free consultations, and competitive prices.

The cost of eye surgery at Ultralase ranges between £1,1695 and £2,995 (per eye), depending on the treatment type that you agree upon in discussion with a surgeon. These prices are in line with the average cost of eye surgery, but not quite as low as Optical Express.

Treatments Offered

You can count on Ultralase for the main laser eye and lens replacement surgery procedures. These include: LASIK and LASEK with Wavefront options, as well as refractive lens exchange (RLE), implantable contact lenses, and cataract surgery.

Is Ultralase Right for You?

With nearly 3,000 overall positive reviews from independent customers in the UK, Ultralase is one of the best-rated laser eye surgery clinics by patients. People value this clinic for its:

  • Friendly prices – Fixed and reasonable prices help you know what to expect.
  • Nationwide clinics – Ultralase has 20 clinics in the UK, including in London, Reading and St Albans.
  • Decent aftercare – Ultralase provides free aftercare – one check-up and drops for the first three months.

Despite glowing reviews, however, it’s worth reading the fine print if you do choose Ultralase. In 2015, BBC’s Watchdog exposed the problems countless laser eye surgery patients have experienced accessing their lifelong aftercare.

Most user reviews on Lasik Eyes show happy experiences, but then again most people never need to take advantage of their lifetime guarantee. If you would like to find out whether Ultralase is the top-rated laser eye surgery clinic near you, we’re here to help.

Ultralase are fantastic! They accepted me 3 months prior to taking a year out travelling. When I came back for a check-up, I needed my left eye 'tweaked'. Superb - all still under my original aftercare. Supremely professional and very caring!

I have worn glasses and contact lenses since I was a child. It's fantastic not to be tied to that anymore. A simple, painless treatment that is over so quickly, with excellent results! Definitely recommended!!

I had Lasek Wavefront treatment done by Mr S Perera at St Albans Ultralase clinic on 29/5/4 as my corneas were too thin for the newer Lasik treatment. My prescriptions were about -3.5 with astigmatism in my left eye and 3 in right eye. I had been concerned as I have a large pupil, but at 6mm (I think) it was ok as they can work up to 8mm or more, not sure on that. My friend had had Lasik with another company in London (which was not convenient to me)and was thrilled as she could see the next day and was driving in 2 days, so my expectation was along those lines. It was all explained to me that healing took longer with Lasek but ultimately gave the same results, although somewhat more painful recovery. On the day of surgery, which was on the Saturday, following a Thursday consultation (which gave me less chance to think about the pros and cons, but also less time to worry...) there was an hour and a half wait, but I was lucky to be able to control nerves with hypnosis, (being a hypnotherapist, myself) but the girl due after me was getting very nervous. The consultant was not happy to operate on the previous lady until he had redone her tests, which in itself was actually very reassuring, although it made it a long day. It was indeed painful once the anaesthetic wore off and my eyes watered and nose ran constantly for a couple of days. I was stunned to see so well straight away, that I was overwhelmed ! It took quite a while for my eyes to settle down, they did say judge after 3 months and now it is 4 months nearly. I am thrilled as I can see the little trees on the horizon, I can see the leaves in the distance, I can see things in the distance I didn't even know where there, having worn glasses since the age of 11. I was told I would have dry eyes, but I haven't and also that as I am 45 I would have to use reading glasses, but I can focus on the tiniest writing, now and it is wonderful. Playing badminton is great, as the halo effect has diminished and is far less than with glasses in the past when I had about 8 lights to contend with. Gym is much easier without specs falling down nose. Swimming is fantastic, though I get spalshed in the eyes where-as before my specs protected, but got so wet and vision blurred with the water. I would recommend this treatment to anyone and did make an appointment to have it done at Boots a couple of years before, but bottled out the dau before. Ultralase were excellent, though one optometrist was a tiny bit brusque with me, but they changed me to a different gentleman straight away. I am thrilled to have had the courage to have this op., as it is wonderful to see so clearly now, it is as if I couldn't see properly at all before !! Many thanks to everyone who helped me to really see for the first time. God Bless.

I had laser surgery at the Birmingham Ultralase clinic in the summer of 2003 and have never looked back. I can still remember getting up the following morning, looking up the road and the miracle of being able to read a car number plate without squinting. I now have 20 - 20 vision and have never had any problems since the surgery. Since I had it done, my sister and two of her daughters have had laser treatment in Essex and they too have been delighted with the results.

Great. One of the best things I've ever done. I would recommend, and have recommended, to anyone.

Amazing how easy it was. So fiew side effects and very little discomfort, specially when compared to the results. My eyesight is now better than with glasses or lenses. A lot of money (to me) but really worth every penny. Staff and the service were excellent. I am over the moon with the result, for very little inconvenience. I would recommend it to anyone, as I said - the best money every spent!

I was treated at Ultralase's Chelmsford clinic at the beginning of August, and I can honestly say that everything about my experience was first-class. From the minute that I first stepped in to the clinic, to my recent checkup, at which it was announced that I had better than 20/20 vision, I knew that I was in safe hands. Naturally, before making the decision to have treatment, I did a lot of research, which showed me that Ultralase were head and shoulders above the competition. As a local politician myself, I noted that Ultralase got a mention in the House of Commons as being the best. Everybody in the clinic really lived up to this, and the treatment itself has been nothing short of life-changing. So much so that I have recommended Ultralase treatment to my wife, who has already arranged a consultation. I have read up on all of the laser eye treatment providers, and I would advise anybody considering treatment that you can trust Ultralase.

This is my account of what happened on my treatment day on the 25th September in the Leeds clinic in case anyone is deciding whether to go ahead with treatment and wants to know more about what will happen. I arrived at the clinic and was given a copy of the consent form to look at whilst helping myself to a drink. (I was booked in for ultralasik plus treatment). I surprised myself that I wasn’t more nervous but it did help that there were other people in the waiting room that had their surgery the previous day and seemed perfectly alright! I was then led through to the pre-treatment room where hubby and I read some magazines for about 20 mins. Then it was time to get my eyes checked by the surgeon to see if everything was OK and answer any questions I had. The surgeon (Eduardo Fiaschetti) seemed really nice and even though he was relatively new to Ultralase, he put me at ease and was confident everything would be alright. After about another 20 minute wait the nurse came to get me and went through when to use my eye drops, and showed me what to do with the eye guards to wear at night. She cleaned my eyes with this brown stuff (I think it was iodine) then administered the first of the anaesthetic eye drops. Then there was the ominous buzzing noise in the room which meant it was time for me to go through. This was the first point I began to feel really nervous and even asked the nurse about what would happen if the eye drops didn’t work! Once in the treatment room everything seemed to go really quickly. I was told to lie on the bed with my head in the moulded headrest, then the surgeon put little white strips on my eyelashes to keep them out of the way – this was a little uncomfortable at first but ok once they were in place, and I was slid under the laser machine. The next thing was the thing I was most dreading – the eye clamp. For some reason this was different to what I was expecting and turned out to be (from what I could see) a metal ring which was put against my eyelids and he twisted the handle and it gently opened them up. Again this was uncomfortable but after a minute I couldn’t really feel it. The nurse then explained I was going to feel some pressure on my eye and I braced myself for the suction ring thing. Again it was good to have done some reading on this site as it prepared me for what it might feel like, although I had visualised a ring coming down from the machine above me but it was actually something the surgeon held in his hand. I was also warned beforehand that my vision would go black for a while, but it was just like someone had pressed the ‘fade out’ button on a camcorder and everything slowly disappeared – a very weird feeling! Then the ‘flap cutter’ was put on my eye and I could feel this little contraption going round on my eye in a circular motion – again very strange but not painful at all. After that the surgeon moved the flap back and everything went very blurry. The nurse advised me how many laser phases there were going to be and counted as they went through the programme. I was expecting to be able to feel something but there was no sensation of this at all and only lasted about a minute in total. There was a slight smell but not that bad. Then the surgeon replaced the flap and pushed it back in place – a very strange thing to see someone moving your eye back in place with a little plastic implement! The strips and clamp were removed and a contact lens put in and an eye guard put over my eye to cover it. Then it was off the bed to wait for them to prepare the laser for my left eye. This was fine but more sensitive as some people have said previously. And that was it! I put my sunglasses on and went to greet hubby in the post-treatment room but my eyes weren’t as light sensitive as I thought they would be and my vision was already pretty clear! I rested for the rest of the day but was amazed when I woke up only a few hours later and my vision was just about as clear as with my glasses. It's now just a week since the op and my vision is as clear (if not clearer) as it was with my contacts/glasses and I’ve no pain or discomfort. It’s almost an anticlimax as I’d booked the week off work and was ready to be pampered but I feel fine apart from a slight dryness now as I’m working on the computer or watching TV for too long. I had my check-up the day after my treatment and even though they weren’t really concerned with my vision at this stage, was surprised when I could read the 3rd line up which is 20/20 vision. (I was previously –3.75 with astigmatism in both eyes). Finally I'd just like to say that all the staff at Ultralase were excellent, I couldn't fault them. If anyone has any queries, feel free to email me (elizabethmarles@hotmail.com). The procedure isn’t as bad as you build it up to be and the results are immediate and fantastic. I’d advise anyone wondering to go for it!

I have worn glasses and latterly extended wear lenses for the last 55 years and am nowfree with the exception of reading glasses. I feel 10 years younger! I had my treatment at Ultralase in Bristol and I could not have hoped for a better result. I have gone from +4.50 to virtually zero in the time I have sometimes spent looking for my glasses. I am still expecting to wake up and find that it was all a dream. All the staff at the Bristol Clinic were brilliant from the consultation phase to the surgery and finally the aftercare. Totally brilliant!

It had considered laser eye treatment for some time, and now I’ve had it done, my only regret is not going ahead sooner. I had worn glasses for years, so having perfect vision now is an incredible feeling. Having said that, it is very important if you are considering treatment, to do your research and make sure you’re happy with the company you choose. I spent a lot of time looking into it, and found Ultralase’s website a great help. This convinced me to have a consultation, at which my expectations were consistantly exceeded. From the minute I walked in the door, I was treated kindly and considerately by all of the staff at the Leeds clinic. I was particularly impressed with the detail of examination, which gave me great confidence, and all of my (many) questions were answered honestly and concisely. At no point did I feel as thought I was being pressured into anything. They went to great lengths to give me all the facts, then let ME decide whether to go ahead. As it happened, it was an easy decision as the benefits massively outweighed any potential risk. On the treatment day itself I was naturally a little nervous, but everyone involved was very reassuring, and the personal service that I received went way beyond my expectations once again. The treatment was a bit of a non-event. It was over in no time, and I could tell the difference immediately. I can’t put into words what a difference this has all made to my day to day life. My greatest thanks go to Ultralase. I was constantly impressed with their level of expertise, and the caring, dedicated nature of the staff – nothing was ever too much trouble. I recommend them wholeheartedly.
