The first Ultralase clinic was opened in January 1991 at the Clatterbridge Hospital near Chester. At the time, all treatments performed were Photorefractive Keratotomy, or PRK, until the Lasik procedure was introduced in 1995.

With the introduction of Lasik, and the clear advantages it demonstrated for certain patients, Ultralase went through a period of dramatic growth through 2002.

2003 Ultralase introduced the revolutionary UltraPlus treatment with Wavefront technology, giving patients visual outcomes far surpassing those of standard laser treatments. Ultralase became the first provider to have all treatment outcomes verified by independent audit.

In March 2009, the commitment to clinical excellence led Ultralase to become the first UK provider to have all Great Britain surgeons certified in Laser Refractive Surgery by the Royal College of Ophthalmologists (RCOphth).

Ultralase Prices

Ultralase comes in second place in our list of the best laser eye surgery clinics in the UK for price, just after Optical Express. That’s because this clinic offers the full shebang: transparent prices, 0% finance options, free consultations, and competitive prices.

The cost of eye surgery at Ultralase ranges between £1,1695 and £2,995 (per eye), depending on the treatment type that you agree upon in discussion with a surgeon. These prices are in line with the average cost of eye surgery, but not quite as low as Optical Express.

Treatments Offered

You can count on Ultralase for the main laser eye and lens replacement surgery procedures. These include: LASIK and LASEK with Wavefront options, as well as refractive lens exchange (RLE), implantable contact lenses, and cataract surgery.

Is Ultralase Right for You?

With nearly 3,000 overall positive reviews from independent customers in the UK, Ultralase is one of the best-rated laser eye surgery clinics by patients. People value this clinic for its:

  • Friendly prices – Fixed and reasonable prices help you know what to expect.
  • Nationwide clinics – Ultralase has 20 clinics in the UK, including in London, Reading and St Albans.
  • Decent aftercare – Ultralase provides free aftercare – one check-up and drops for the first three months.

Despite glowing reviews, however, it’s worth reading the fine print if you do choose Ultralase. In 2015, BBC’s Watchdog exposed the problems countless laser eye surgery patients have experienced accessing their lifelong aftercare.

Most user reviews on Lasik Eyes show happy experiences, but then again most people never need to take advantage of their lifetime guarantee. If you would like to find out whether Ultralase is the top-rated laser eye surgery clinic near you, we’re here to help.

I had the treatment performed on 30.05.02 and although its early days I can see better than when I wore the specs (I was a -7). The treatment was painless and all the staff were friendly and made me aware that I may still need specs noting my prescription. Reading is slightly blurred however I'm going for a follow up on Friday and they are even showing the England match. By the way my wife had the treatment performed here two years ago and although she had no probs and eyesight is fully restored it's still taken me all this time to pluck up the courage. doh.

It is now over 7 months since I had my laser treatment at Ultralase in Chester. It is the best money I have ever spent. I should have had it done years ago.

Treatment 29/4/02 by Paul Cherry,Bristol. prescription prior to treatment R -5, L -4.75.

After watching this web-site for 8 months, I became extremely optimistic about the results LASIK surgery could offer. Due to my panicky, pessimistic nature I had tried to read and find out about everything that could possibly go wrong and there is no denying it there are quite a few things. Why Ultralase -I chose Ultralase because they had good feedback and years of experience, and ultimately because having informed my brother of my findings he had been to Bristol, found he was suitable and had the surgery the following week - I was gob smacked, he was amazed - with his results.
So off we sped to Bristol, 1 hour and 5 or 6 tests later it was established that I too was a suitable candidate for treatment. I would not say I was excited, rather even more nervous, I had now to decide if I wanted to go ahead. One question I did ask was whether I was border line on any of the tests as this would have been an important factor to me. I booked myself for surgery on 29th April which was approx. 3 weeks away - enough time to mull it over, plus, the fact I wanted Paul Cherry who was not available until then.
The day of surgery - yep, I felt like backing out. I studied my children trying to imprint their faces into my hysterical mind. I prayed all the way to Bristol (2-3hours)I'll be a better person etc etc but please don't let anything major go wrong. I had definitely read too much.
Having had Mr Cherry retest certain aspects of my sight, nice bloke but by this time I was so panicky and felt so ill that I really could not concentrate on what he wanted and felt he was a little exasperated but said his conclusions were indicating the same way as the optometrist and was happy to go ahead. I think if I had been given the consent form prior to any of this I would probably have backed out, that form is scary reading, you just have to tell yourself they need to cover themselves and try not to read too in-depth. I was not asked if I would like a sedative I think on reflection I should have had one. Blindly led (as I had no glasses on) to the surgery table, I was spoken to
step by step as to what was happening to me. I think the worse part was the smell of the laser on the eye, perhaps you should be offered something to rub under your nose I'll suggest it on my next check up. Also don't swallow whilst the laser is working. 15 mins later all done, blurry milky vision - normal. No pain. Another 15 mins on our way to our hotel. By 10.00pm sitting in a restaurant. Vision was still a bit blurry. Dreadful nightmares that night. Vision next day pretty good could read third line up from bottom of chart. Eyes felt like they had grit in them for about 3/4 days. I couldn't fault them for aftercare, having made a phone call about one eye being quite red and irritable they were brilliant could not do enough and did not brush the issue off, were happy for me to go in there and then to have it checked. Note eye drops seem to go in easy blue box then pink also they forget to tell you to leave 2/3mins between drops.
2 weeks on and my eyes are better than 20/20 they feel gritty towards the end of the day and I still wonder what the hell have I done, but I am amazed with the results. There are so many things I have wanted to do but felt restricted with glasses.
I would sincerely recommend Ultralase for their professionalism, and genuine interest in you as an individual and of course their results.

I had my LASIK done at Chester 4 days ago. Forty minutes after the exam I was 20/20 in one eye, and within a couple of hours I was seeing as well with both eyes as I ever did with glasses or contact lenses. I was mildly myopic before (-2.25, -3, a bit of astigmatism) but I didn't expect such a fast result. All the staff have been fantastic all the time.

I had my treatment done at Hammersmith nearly five weeks ago. I can endorse everyone's comments about the professional treatment before and post-op. The only thing that took me by surprise was the amount of pain I suffered for about six hours afterwards - really nasty. I wonder now if I was reacting badly to the drops - I now use (infrequently) the Refresh drops which have no preservative. My vision is much better in the morning - by evening I notice the difference in my eyes becomes more marked and driving at might is not brilliant. I'm using reading specs, but that's because I'm old (50) and needed them with my contacts before the op.
All in all I'm glad I had the procedure done, but I wish my left eye could have been improved to the same degree as my right. Am having my second check up in Guildford day after tomorrow, and might be told more about the imbalance in my sight then.
I'd be pleased to talk to anyone considering going ahead . . .

I Had my surgery done by Mr Gupta 2 days ago at the new St Albans clinic (-5.00 right, -3.25 left)... I had been extremely nervous in the run up, and during the little sleep I was getting, I kept waking up and thinking "What am I thinking of?". The fact that about 7 people at work hadn't had it done and had not been blinded and were happy with it had persuaded me to do it. I had also been impressed with Ultralase service and lack of pressure into having the treatment at the consultations. The optometrist was very uncertain as to whether I could have it done as I already had a dry left eye and there was some corneal scarring. They told me to come back and see Mr Gupta who had a look at it for 30 seconds and said it was fine - a quick decision was very reassuring, and I got the feeling he was only going to do it if he was certain. After much gibbering paranoia I went for it. The nurse was very reassuring which relaxed my nerves and in I went. It was NOT a pleasant experience, but over in 10 minutes. Whilst horrendous, I did feel in safe hands and when it was over I could see enough to think "this is going to be OK". Sight started coming back and Mr Gupta pronounced that he was "very happy" with it - fine by me! Went home with the missus who couldn't park my car, but thankfully I could see well enough to do a mean reverse park. Took it easy and could see quite well after 4 hours. Strapped on the night guards and slept (worrying if I would wake up blind - thankfully not). Was OK next day, but a little light sensitive. Went for a check up the next day, which was short but just to clear up that there were no problems. Still light sensitive on day 2, but vision still improving. Back to work the day after (today) not too great focussing on the PC screen but got by - bit of a headache, but I probably overdid it. I feel that this will improve. Driving at night was fine, but the lights do have quite a halo effect. All in all I have been impressed with the results but I know that it is not over yet. Got to make sure that I look after the eyes and don't get an infection - or more likely, get drunk and do something awful to them. If it carries on like this I would definitely move it to a 5 star review. Ultralase were very professional and I got the impression that they weren't prepared to compromise health for cash. Rather than say "go and do it" have a read of this sit and make your own mind up. Fingers crossed I will go through the recovery period without any problems.

I had LASIK in 1997 by Mr Paul Cherry in Leeds (even then I think he had done about 100 LASIK operations). 5 years later still no problems (touch wood). I did not have bilateral treatment as this seemed just too risky. 15 minutes after the operation on my second eye. The flap came loose! Went back into have it put back in place, then 5 minutes later it came loose again. Eventually on the third attempt it stayed in place (by this time he was considering putting a stitch in my eye to keep the flap in place!). Short term effects of this were a lot of pain for 24hrs. Long term effects - probably slight poorer vision. I think the main thing is to have an experienced surgeon, so if there is a complication, there's a good chance he can overcome it.

10 Feb 2002

Three weeks now, and my vision is excellent, better than 20/20. very pleased with this side of things. I had trouble with the drops and a lot of discomfort and streaming eyes, which I wasn't told about as an after effect. Ultralase told me that I probably was allergic to the drops. Further confusion about how long to stay away from activities, I was told one month before the operation, but spoke to a consultant the other day who recommends three months.

29 Mar 2002

It has been 10 days since the operation...I called in to the clinic on Saturday as I had a slight irritation with my left eye, I expected to have a "don't worry about it" or "on your way , it is supposed to feel like that" but I was there for 2 and a half hours while the optometrist frantically tried to contact a surgeon for advice!! I tried to remain calm but I was slightly concerned when he mentioned going to see the surgeon again as I had a small but deep corneal abrasion....no Idea what that was so I just nodded away agreeing with him.
To cut a long 3 hours short....I was told to double the anti-biotic drops and they sent me on my way and said to call back on monday.
Monday came....saw a different optometrist...same answer again...continue the drops come back Saturday.
My vision is 20/20+ in one eye and 20/20 in the other...no more grittiness but I will let you know more after tomorrows visit.
The results have been amazing but every time I wake up in the morning I think that it is getting worse due to the sodding plastic eye shields.....only 4 days left to wear them...and counting them down.
At present....night driving is still a bit of an adventure....many bright lights.....like 4th of July on acid!!
Cheers.....

I'm due to have my second eye done on Fri 29th Nov. I'm pleased with my focusing range, especially in the mornings, the sensitivity to bright lights has diminished now. I'm not sure, though that I will be able to drive at night, as like you Michelle, I've got quite bad starbursts from headlights, and streetlamps. I think I may have some astigmatism, still because although my focusing is good, It can be blurry at times. I can't wait to have my second eye done, and I'm very grateful that my eyes are still healthy ( no infections, or pain). I'm really pleased your op was a success Michelle, and you've been able to get rid of your specs. I'll follow up after Fri. Wish me luck!!
