The first Ultralase clinic was opened in January 1991 at the Clatterbridge Hospital near Chester. At the time, all treatments performed were Photorefractive Keratotomy, or PRK, until the Lasik procedure was introduced in 1995.
With the introduction of Lasik, and the clear advantages it demonstrated for certain patients, Ultralase went through a period of dramatic growth through 2002.
2003 Ultralase introduced the revolutionary UltraPlus treatment with Wavefront technology, giving patients visual outcomes far surpassing those of standard laser treatments. Ultralase became the first provider to have all treatment outcomes verified by independent audit.
In March 2009, the commitment to clinical excellence led Ultralase to become the first UK provider to have all Great Britain surgeons certified in Laser Refractive Surgery by the Royal College of Ophthalmologists (RCOphth).
Ultralase Prices
Ultralase comes in second place in our list of the best laser eye surgery clinics in the UK for price, just after Optical Express. That’s because this clinic offers the full shebang: transparent prices, 0% finance options, free consultations, and competitive prices.
The cost of eye surgery at Ultralase ranges between £1,1695 and £2,995 (per eye), depending on the treatment type that you agree upon in discussion with a surgeon. These prices are in line with the average cost of eye surgery, but not quite as low as Optical Express.
Treatments Offered
You can count on Ultralase for the main laser eye and lens replacement surgery procedures. These include: LASIK and LASEK with Wavefront options, as well as refractive lens exchange (RLE), implantable contact lenses, and cataract surgery.
Is Ultralase Right for You?
With nearly 3,000 overall positive reviews from independent customers in the UK, Ultralase is one of the best-rated laser eye surgery clinics by patients. People value this clinic for its:
- Friendly prices – Fixed and reasonable prices help you know what to expect.
- Nationwide clinics – Ultralase has 20 clinics in the UK, including in London, Reading and St Albans.
- Decent aftercare – Ultralase provides free aftercare – one check-up and drops for the first three months.
Despite glowing reviews, however, it’s worth reading the fine print if you do choose Ultralase. In 2015, BBC’s Watchdog exposed the problems countless laser eye surgery patients have experienced accessing their lifelong aftercare.

Ultralase really changed my day to day life. I used to really struggle with contacts, when I went out and without them couldn't recognise people from more than 5 meters away. I used to spend a fortune on glasses and never really liked wearing them - I used to wear prescription sunglasses but had to carry round normal glasses as well for when I was in buildings. I do alot of clay pidgeon shooting and wear glasses for safety on dry days but when it was raining, one drop of rain on my glasses would distract me completely. When I go swimming I can see the other people in the pool as well . So all in all it really has changed so many of the things that I had had to make do with before - I reccomend it to everyone - IT WILL CHANGE YOUR LIFE !

I have worn contact lenses for 17 years, my prescription -4.75.The staff at guildford were fantastic so calming and very proffesional, the treatment was over so quickly and straight away Ii could tell the difference, this procedure has changed my life, evenings out are so clear when driving and no dirty contacts to deal with or sore eyes the next morning..I would recommend this treatment my vision is now better than 20/20...one word to sum up would be FANTASTIC

I really can't praise Ultralase enough with regards to their professionalism and genuine care for their patients. I was absolutely terrified about having my eyes lasered (it took me 4 years to pluck up the courage to wear contact lenses!) but they immediately put me at ease and I am amazed at the results. The only really painful part about the whole procedure is being unable to wear eye make up for a fortnight. I think I was the guniea pig for a lot of people in my office but now they are all making appointments to have it done. If I can do it, anybody can.

From start to finish, the staff at the Ultralase clinic in Birmingham were friendly and helpful. They didn't mind how many questions how asked, no matter how stupid they seemed! On the treatment day, I was put at ease and knew what to expect. As vision in my right eye was not very short sighted, I only had my left eye treated. Although I had originally said I would have both eyes treated, I was not pressurised in any way to have them both done. The treatment was successful and the staff have continued to be helpful when I have attended my after-care appointments. I would recommend Ultralase to anyone considering laser eye surgery as a friendly, helpful organisation with no pressure to have treatment if you are not entirely convinced it is right for you.

I had LASIK surgery at the Guildford Ultralase in November 2003. It's unbelievable! Having worn glasses since I was 6yrs old and having been unable to wear contact lenses, the freedom is incredible. The staff were lovely and so thorough that I felt very reassured and in good hands. It's been so life changing for me that I have recommended the treatment to a number of people - I still can't believe how well it turned out!

With a prescription need of minus 9 I had already been turned down by one laser clinic who said my only option was implantable contact lenses. When I went for my consultancy with Ultralase it was very thorough and my results suggested that there was a possibility that I could undergo LASIK. The optician took away my results to discuss with the surgeon and then contacted me a few days later to give me the good news. I underwent Ultra LASIK a week later and it was explained to me that I would be left with a slight prescription need. The staff at Ultralase were extremely thorough and I found the procedure painless and unproblematic. After a few hours of experiencing light sensitivity I went to bed and awoke to no sensitivity and the ability to see well for the first time ever. A week later I am achieving 20/20 vision and my sight is still improving each day. I am absolutely thrilled with the results and would have no hesitation in recommending Ultralase.

I had wavefront-guided LASEK in June 2004 and right from the moment the procedure was finished I was delighted with the results, I simply sat up and I could see. It was just an incredible feeling for me having needed glasses or lenses since I was eight and would recommend it to anyone. Personnally I had no hesitation, it was a natural reaction for me to discuss the decision with loved ones and was shocked when my Mum said go for it when I was expecting her to be nervous, in her day Contact lenses were a new thing and she was put off them by a lot of people she knew but eventually in her 30's decided to go for it and now regrets all those years she sufferred with glasses, so she was determined to support this new treatment as it is just the next step up from glasses.....and believe me its been the ultimate one for me. I went to the barrier reef in Australia 10 years ago but could not wear glasses or contact lenses to snorkle so I missed seeing so much, now I am looking forward to going back again next year to see everything with fresh eyes. I would just like to thank all the staff at St Albans who made me feel confident and comfortable. MICHAELA

I went for an initial consultation at the Guildford clinic to see if I was suitable for Wavefront. Well first off I met with what I have to describe as a friendly person who did my prescription but inherently didn’t come across as very professional. My fears where later proved correct when he put drops in my eyes to test me on the wavefront machine (the one with the white/black round circles) only to find the room that this machine was in was occupied. I waited for half an hour which meant the eye drops where not effective when I was tested finally on the machine. The advisor said I should come in for a retest in 3 weeks time, there next available slot! To make things worse I then talked to the nurse councillor who goes through the prices with you only to find her contradicting information compared to what I have been told by the previous gentlemen, and that he only comes in once a week for a few hours! All this boast about there staff being full time committed to only Ultralase is a little thin after this. In all they need to have a better management system there, the room being occupied when it was my turn was simply unacceptable! Eventually I went to Optical Express which did an excellent consultation, went through the procedures in much more detail and more importently went through the risks in depth; they came across as more honest and professional. There machine stated that I can have wavefront and I am indeed going to go with them at Shaftsbury Avenue (London). I keep you updated on the results. P.S I don’t know why this website promotes the Zyoptix (Ultralase) machine so much, the VISX 4 machine (which optical express has) in clinical trials has a higher percentage of people obtaining 20/20 vision then the Zyoptix (96% vs 91%), and as far as I can see less complications? Look at the official FDA report on the VISX 4 at http://www.fda.gov/cdrh/pdf/p930016S016a.pdf Especially look at pages 2-3 which go through complications, and the latest Zyoptix lazer at http://www.fda.gov/cdrh/pdf/P990027S006a.pdf Again look at pages 2-3. You decide?

The staff at Ultralase were excellent and made me feel completely at ease. I couldn't belive how quickly the treatment worked and I could see perfectly to drive the next day! My friend went to ultralase and had her eyes done too after she had seen how pleased I was with the results.

My life has been changed dramatically since my operation with Ultralase. It is absolutely wonderful; waking up in the morning and being able to see!! No more fumbling and poking in my eyes to use contact lenses. I would and do recommend it to everyone!
