The first Ultralase clinic was opened in January 1991 at the Clatterbridge Hospital near Chester. At the time, all treatments performed were Photorefractive Keratotomy, or PRK, until the Lasik procedure was introduced in 1995.

With the introduction of Lasik, and the clear advantages it demonstrated for certain patients, Ultralase went through a period of dramatic growth through 2002.

2003 Ultralase introduced the revolutionary UltraPlus treatment with Wavefront technology, giving patients visual outcomes far surpassing those of standard laser treatments. Ultralase became the first provider to have all treatment outcomes verified by independent audit.

In March 2009, the commitment to clinical excellence led Ultralase to become the first UK provider to have all Great Britain surgeons certified in Laser Refractive Surgery by the Royal College of Ophthalmologists (RCOphth).

Ultralase Prices

Ultralase comes in second place in our list of the best laser eye surgery clinics in the UK for price, just after Optical Express. That’s because this clinic offers the full shebang: transparent prices, 0% finance options, free consultations, and competitive prices.

The cost of eye surgery at Ultralase ranges between £1,1695 and £2,995 (per eye), depending on the treatment type that you agree upon in discussion with a surgeon. These prices are in line with the average cost of eye surgery, but not quite as low as Optical Express.

Treatments Offered

You can count on Ultralase for the main laser eye and lens replacement surgery procedures. These include: LASIK and LASEK with Wavefront options, as well as refractive lens exchange (RLE), implantable contact lenses, and cataract surgery.

Is Ultralase Right for You?

With nearly 3,000 overall positive reviews from independent customers in the UK, Ultralase is one of the best-rated laser eye surgery clinics by patients. People value this clinic for its:

  • Friendly prices – Fixed and reasonable prices help you know what to expect.
  • Nationwide clinics – Ultralase has 20 clinics in the UK, including in London, Reading and St Albans.
  • Decent aftercare – Ultralase provides free aftercare – one check-up and drops for the first three months.

Despite glowing reviews, however, it’s worth reading the fine print if you do choose Ultralase. In 2015, BBC’s Watchdog exposed the problems countless laser eye surgery patients have experienced accessing their lifelong aftercare.

Most user reviews on Lasik Eyes show happy experiences, but then again most people never need to take advantage of their lifetime guarantee. If you would like to find out whether Ultralase is the top-rated laser eye surgery clinic near you, we’re here to help.

Good luck Linda! Hope it goes well. One week update after having both eyes done - vision is not as clear as it was Saturday, but seems to vary during the day, getting worse towards the end of the day (and eyes get very tired!) I am seeing quite bad starbursts also, especially from car headlights. Are you getting these too Angela? I keep forgetting to ask about them - must remember to at my follow up next week.

I had been contemplating having laser eye correction for a long time and eventually plucked up the courage to have a consultation with Ultralase. I found the consultation to be very thorough and all my questions were answered. The optom I saw was very helpful, and I still see her now for my check ups. I was under no pressure to book the treatment, and once I found out that I was suitable I went away and considered it for a few days before I booked for the treatment with Mr. Gupta at The Ultralase clinic in Hammersmith. On the day of treatment I was very nervous, but was soon reassured by the very friendly staff and nurse who took me through the whole procedure. Mr Gupta was very professional too, and made sure I was 100% sure that I wanted to go through with the treatment. I am completely amazed by the results. A few hours after the treatment I could see nearly as clearly as I could with my glasses. I had no pain or discomfort either. For the 10 minutes it took I am now completely free from glasses and contact lens. I am so pleased with the results, I would recommend it to anyone.

I wore contact lenses from the age of 16 and hated it. The hassle of cleaning them, carrying all the solutions around and then getting sore eyes when I was tired was driving me mad. I had my consultation and treatment with Ultralase in January this year. The consultation was very thorough and every question I had was answered clearly and concisely. The treatment itself takes only 20 minutes and it is amazing to think that I now have 20/20 vision! I chose Ultralase because I had heard so many good things about their service and their experience. It is all true - everyone is so friendly, polite and professional and I can't stop talking about it even 11 months later! I was treated at the central London clinic.

I had my initial consultation at the beginning of May. Because I had been wearing gas permeable lenses for approx 25 years, my eyes were slightly 'out of shape'. I was also told that my cornea was border line on thickness. I was advised to leave my lenses out for at least 6 weeks to enable my eyes to return to their normal shape which I did. I returned at the beginning of August and was told that my eyes were in much better state and I was a suitable candidate although I could still have a slight under correction due to the thickness of the cornea. My original prescription was -7 in both eyes. I have to say that through all these consultations the Guildford clinic were very thorough , honest and bore no pressure. At this stage they also advised that they were also undertaking LASEK treatment which may give me a better outcome, but after explaining the procedure I was not totally convinced that this was for me. Anyway, finally on the 5th November (2 weeks ago) I underwent the LASIK treatment and I can honestly say that I am 'blown away' with the outcome. Mr Gupta was the surgeon and on the day all the staff at Guildford were excellent. I felt really at ease; they went through all the procedure beforehand and explained everything that was happening as it was performed. When I came out from under the laser I could actually read the time from the clock on the wall which was something I would never have been able to do beforehand! Initially I had a little inflammation in both eyes which was not visible but picked up in my consultation 24 hours later. Anti inflammation drops treated this and by the Friday my eyes were clear. Although I have not yet had a proper eye test I was able to read the 20/20 vision line on the wall apart from one letter. I will be returning on the 3rd December for my next check up. For me the outcome has been excellent bearing in mind that I was expecting a slight under correction and I can only commend Mr Gupta on his excellence. I can highly recommend the Guildford clinic, especially Keith and Corinne the Opthalmists who have been fair, honest and totally professional throughout. The level of customer service has been high. I am now totally boring in my recommendation - long may my sight be as good as it is now. Thanks Ultralase.

Had second op three days ago and am extremely pleased. It was a bit more painful than the first - a lot of watering throughout the evening following and the morning after, but, miraculously just before lunch time the watering stopped, the redness disappeared and the swelling went down - and I could read the small print on the signage on the other side of the field at Twickenham Stadium (which brought tears to my eyes - tears of joy that is!) The eye still feels scratchy when I blink, but I experienced that last time and its goes away pretty quickly, just need to keep the eye wet with artificial tears so it doesn't dry out. Angela - glasses are gone! I did have an optician appointment made for today as I was so sure that I would need them to look at the computer - mainly for my left eye, but even though that is still a bit short sighted (-1.00 when measured on Friday), the two eyes together are working great. Distance viewing is not as good today as it was on Saturday, but I expect it will continue to fluctuate over the next few weeks. All in all at the moment I am extremely glad I did it - whereas two weeks ago I was having severe regrets! I would definitely say it has been a success, and it will only get better once the left eye is redone. Angela, let me know how you go with your second eye.

Update: I had my LASIK surgery (done by Dr. Paul Cherry) over a month ago and recently had another checkup at Ultralase (Bristol). I haven't had any problems and my left eye has improved quite a bit since the op (it wasn't as good as I'd hoped for the first couple of weeks) - my vision being about 20/20. I'd thoroughly recommend having the treatment, and I know that several friends have now said they are interested in getting their eyes fixed sometime.

I had the surgery done 5 days ago at Chester. It was quick, painless and above all successful. At the checkup the following morning I was able to read the bottom line of the chart with each eye (20/20 vision!) Initially after the laser surgery I felt disappointed as I expected to see everything and in focus immediately but it did take a couple of hours for my eyes to settle down. My subscription was quite mild compared to some (-2.5r,-1.75l) but still bad enough to need glasses all day every day. The staff and surgeon were fantastic and it was without a doubt the best £1700 I have ever spent. The only down side is I now get comments from my children and 'friends' that I looked better with my glasses!!

I was treated at the Tottenham Court Road clinic, and consider that the treatment I received was very friendly and professional, and I was not kept waiting at all. I now have better than 20/20 vision, and am thrilled with the outcome. I would recommend this clinic to anyone.

24 Feb 2002

I had my post-op (6 weeks) check up at Tottenham Court Road, London and my eyesight has improved since my first check up: I can now see the bottom line of the chart (6/5 in both eyes)! Excellent results and thoroughly recommended!

I had treatment by Neil Marshall on 20th March 2002. The treatment was painless but there was a mild discomfort when the clamp and the suction ring were put in place. I left the clinic with milky hazy vision (which I was warned about). After the aneasthetic wore off I could not open my eyes for a few hours so I just lay in a dark room chillin' out for a bit!
The next day was fantastic. My distance vision was excellent, the pain had gone, but my vision within a five feet radius seemed to take a long time to focus. I went for my post examination and it appeared that I was slightly long sighted and I was told thatit may correct itself over the next few days.
Today, (2 days after treatment) my vision is excellent and the focusing within 5 feet is quicker and sharper...however my left eye is stinging slightly and my right eye is slightly bruised....apart form that....I can see....who cares about the bruise!!
I will write more next week after my weekly checkup.
