The first Ultralase clinic was opened in January 1991 at the Clatterbridge Hospital near Chester. At the time, all treatments performed were Photorefractive Keratotomy, or PRK, until the Lasik procedure was introduced in 1995.
With the introduction of Lasik, and the clear advantages it demonstrated for certain patients, Ultralase went through a period of dramatic growth through 2002.
2003 Ultralase introduced the revolutionary UltraPlus treatment with Wavefront technology, giving patients visual outcomes far surpassing those of standard laser treatments. Ultralase became the first provider to have all treatment outcomes verified by independent audit.
In March 2009, the commitment to clinical excellence led Ultralase to become the first UK provider to have all Great Britain surgeons certified in Laser Refractive Surgery by the Royal College of Ophthalmologists (RCOphth).
Ultralase Prices
Ultralase comes in second place in our list of the best laser eye surgery clinics in the UK for price, just after Optical Express. That’s because this clinic offers the full shebang: transparent prices, 0% finance options, free consultations, and competitive prices.
The cost of eye surgery at Ultralase ranges between £1,1695 and £2,995 (per eye), depending on the treatment type that you agree upon in discussion with a surgeon. These prices are in line with the average cost of eye surgery, but not quite as low as Optical Express.
Treatments Offered
You can count on Ultralase for the main laser eye and lens replacement surgery procedures. These include: LASIK and LASEK with Wavefront options, as well as refractive lens exchange (RLE), implantable contact lenses, and cataract surgery.
Is Ultralase Right for You?
With nearly 3,000 overall positive reviews from independent customers in the UK, Ultralase is one of the best-rated laser eye surgery clinics by patients. People value this clinic for its:
- Friendly prices – Fixed and reasonable prices help you know what to expect.
- Nationwide clinics – Ultralase has 20 clinics in the UK, including in London, Reading and St Albans.
- Decent aftercare – Ultralase provides free aftercare – one check-up and drops for the first three months.
Despite glowing reviews, however, it’s worth reading the fine print if you do choose Ultralase. In 2015, BBC’s Watchdog exposed the problems countless laser eye surgery patients have experienced accessing their lifelong aftercare.
Most user reviews on Lasik Eyes show happy experiences, but then again most people never need to take advantage of their lifetime guarantee. If you would like to find out whether Ultralase is the top-rated laser eye surgery clinic near you, we’re here to help.

It's now 4 months since my surgery. I had my eyes tested the other day. left eye +0.50, right +0.25. This is well within the limits for driving. The optician was really impressed with my 'neat scars' on the eyes, and drew the location of them on a bit of paper for me. Apparently, the distortions in vision after refractive surgery can be caused by scar tissue forming on the suface of the eye, so thorough aftercare is essential, like no rubbing. My eyes are very healthy, and overall I can call the surgery a success. I would say that if you're considering refractive surgery do not forget how important the aftercare of your eyes are. Many thanks again to the younger Dr. Jory and the team at LCRS.

I was treated just over a week ago at the Guildford clinic by Mr Perera. My sight was around -6/-7 in each eye and treatment was uncomfortable but not painful. My long sight is now great although my medium site needs to settle down (Ultralase put it down to my brain having to get used to my new vision). The glasses they provide don't help and in the few instances that I take them off my vision is great. Overall my vision is just about as good as it was with glasses before the op and you can't ask for anything more than that. Definitely recommended.

I had surgery at the Ultralase clinic Cardiff and found the staff, service and treatment to be more than excellent. I was taken through the whole thing before the treatment and felt they were incredibly thorough and helpful. Any concerns or nerves about the treatment were dealt with kindly and with patience. I am more than pleased with the surgery and feel it has totally changed my life. No more glasses and contact lenses and faffing around in the morning, Just get up and i can see. No one who has never had to worry about their sight can appreciate how wonderful the feeling is to wake up and be able to see straight away and feel confident that the clinic have treated you in the best possible way. I have highly recomended Cardiff Ultralase to many of my friends who are considering having Lasik surgery and would recomend them to anyone else who has thought about sugery. It is definately value for money and worth every penny.

Had done lots of research before the procedure so knew pretty much what to expect. The procedure was completely painless and very quick. My vision is better than I expected although I am still using drops to counteract dryness. To be able to wake up every morning and see clearly is a miracle. I would recommend Ultralase - very friendly and efficient staff.

Prescription pre-op R -7 L -7.5, 40 years of spectacle wearing and 25 years of contact lenses! Had been considering Lasik for some time and had a consultation in Birmingham Oct 2000, where I was rejected due to corneal oedema in one eye (probably due to an infection). I found this slightly reassuring as Ultralase were apparently not after my money under any circumstances! Tried again July 2002 in Bristol and was accepted - though my corneal thickness (500 microns ish) was barely enough for my prescription. Fortunately I have fairly small pupils and the surgeon (Neil Marshall) was happy to go ahead. If you have any doubts - ask! After I had a chance to think things through, I felt I needed more information about the likely effect on my night vision with this combination. I contacted the clinic and was able to arrange an informal 15 minute chat with Neil to set my mind at rest. The op itself was uncomfortable rather than painful (mainly due to the suction cup on the microkeratome!). The few days immediately following the op were not a lot of fun - gritty eyes, scummy drops, light sensitivity - bit like a bad hangover without the up-front fun. And like everyone else I was continually testing my eyes and worrying about flap displacement. My advice - take a few days off work. If you work under artificial lights (I do) or use a computer screen (me too) or have air-con (me again) - the combination is not good…. Post op care was fine - I woke one day to find I had my fingers jammed under my 'fly' eye shields and was petrified I'd moved something. Rang the clinic and was seen within a couple of hours. I suppose I was fortunate that I had no significant complications and didn't need a great deal of post-op support. I followed what appears to be the typical pattern of a heavier prescription - vision very variable for some considerable time, night vision a bit grim for a while (like wearing dried up contact lenses) and some dry-eye. Now 7 months post-op. Had a check-up last week and measure R 6/5 L 6/6 against the chart. That doesn't tell the whole story. Vision in bright light is great - at least as good as contact lenses. Dim light less so, but perfectly tolerable in most situations. There is an indefinable deterioration in visual quality at times, but it's hard to describe and not measurable. I now have reading glasses as my close vision is not good, but I was going there in the next couple of years due to my age anyway, so no great sacrifice! Overall, the result is at least as good I had hoped, I can function normally in almost all situations and though I still suffer from some grittiness and blurring when in work (harsh environment), I hope that will gradually go as the healing completes. The team at the Bristol clinic have always been helpful and Neil's judgement was obviously good - my right eye is now stable and the left is still improving slightly at each check-up. It won't be for everyone. Get all the information you can from the web, ask lots of questions, talk to your surgeon and if you're still not convinced, stick with your specs. I didn't and have no regrets!

I had my surgery on March 7th at the Tottenham Court Road clinic. My surgeon was Pascal Anonnier. The worst bit about the surgery was the clamp that they put on your eye - I found that very uncomfortable. My eyes were uncomfortable for about 4 hours after the operation but after that they were fine. My prescription had been R -3.5 L-4.5 - I can now read the bottom line of the chart. The plastic shields and the glasses are annoying but two weeks isn't a long time really. I have been suffering from dry eyes a bit since. After the operation Mr Annonier said that my left eye was dry so I was ready for the side effects. When I had my week check up the opthalmologist was very helpful and understanding, I have a gel to put in my eyes during the day and one for night time - none of this would put me off reccommending the surgery to anyone - after wearing glasses for 23 years and lenses for 17 years I can see first thing in the morning - no more steamed up glasses! If I had to make the decision again I wouldn't hesitate to go for the operation this time.

I had my surgery at the Tottenham Court Road branch by Dr Pascal Annonier on the 13th March 2003. The procedure was quick and painless and I could see if a little hazy straight away. I was able to travel home by tube afterwards. I was very light sensitive by the time I got home but a couple of hours sleep wearing my gorgeous plastic eye shields sorted that out and I was able to watch TV in the evening. My eyesight is now 20/20 and I am extremely happy with the results. Ultralase and there staff were excellent and I would have no hesitation in recommending anyone to have the treatment.

I had both eyes done on the 8th of January 2003 at the their Bristol clinic. The results were very good and pretty much instantaneous. I drove myself to the check-up on the following day. The staff were all excellent and I was given accurate information at all times. I suffered no pain and very little discomfort. Three months on I've suffered no side effects apart from slightly dry eyes at times, but side effect is very mild and easily treated with inexpensive eye drops when necessary. I would thoroughly recommend them to anyone.

I woke up one day and realised how much I hate the tediousness of glasses and contact lenses. Especially as I am a very keen sports person and hate all the palaver surrounding contact lenses. I did some research and found Ultralase (among others). So I simply booked myself in for a consultation as no harm could come from doing that. I just wanted to see hoe professional they actually were so made my way to their St Albans centre. My first impression was good as the staff were very friendly and more importantly, professional. I then spoke to the optician about my reservations of the treatment...he put my mind at ease but more importantly it is up to the individual to realise that with anything you do...there is a slight risk! The beauty of Lasik is you CANNOT go blind! So what is the big deal...give it a go...got nothing to loose I think. Anyway had my treatment in February and must be honest...it has been the best decision I have ever made...granted that for a month, no sports are allowed but that was a minor sacrifice. I now have 6/5 vision but here is the reason...Ultralase was brilliant! They have provided me with every bit assistance that I have needed from the time I took my first step into their clinic. They cannot take responsibility for your actions and if you really want a hassle free recovery...just listen to the advice they give...invaluable!!

I had my treatment on 14th March at Hammersmith clinic. This was after 3/4 years of considering the op but waiting for more treatments to be conducted and see if any horror stories came out. Yes there have been, see lasikdisaster.com, but after weighing it all up - I decided to go for it. In these 3 or so years, I had had consultations with Optimax, (didn't like the fact they pushed you for treatment same day as consultation), Moorfields - which I have to say were very good just a long wait for the treatment date, Boots and Ultralase. Ultralase and Vinod Gupta as many others state here, were excellent...not pushy, answered all my questions and this surgeon in my opinion is one of the best. After reading this site I decided to book my appt with him. If you hate wearing specs and find contacts uncomfortable then I say - go for it! Yes the treatment is a little uncomfortable, but very quick and painless. Get a late appt then go home and sleep. I had 6/5 vision the next day in both eyes! Its been over 3 weeks now and I have had no problems. If I am working on the computer all day then I get a little dryness but I have started to put some non-preservative eye drops, (you can get from the chemist) and it seems to do the trick. Night time driving is much the same as when I wore contacts - car headlights glare. I am still amazed that this quick procedure has made such a difference and wish I had not waited so long. I would highly recommend Ultralase - all its staff and especially the surgeon - Vinod Gupta. Oh and my prescription before was -4.5R and -5L with astigmatism in left eye.
