The first Ultralase clinic was opened in January 1991 at the Clatterbridge Hospital near Chester. At the time, all treatments performed were Photorefractive Keratotomy, or PRK, until the Lasik procedure was introduced in 1995.
With the introduction of Lasik, and the clear advantages it demonstrated for certain patients, Ultralase went through a period of dramatic growth through 2002.
2003 Ultralase introduced the revolutionary UltraPlus treatment with Wavefront technology, giving patients visual outcomes far surpassing those of standard laser treatments. Ultralase became the first provider to have all treatment outcomes verified by independent audit.
In March 2009, the commitment to clinical excellence led Ultralase to become the first UK provider to have all Great Britain surgeons certified in Laser Refractive Surgery by the Royal College of Ophthalmologists (RCOphth).
Ultralase Prices
Ultralase comes in second place in our list of the best laser eye surgery clinics in the UK for price, just after Optical Express. That’s because this clinic offers the full shebang: transparent prices, 0% finance options, free consultations, and competitive prices.
The cost of eye surgery at Ultralase ranges between £1,1695 and £2,995 (per eye), depending on the treatment type that you agree upon in discussion with a surgeon. These prices are in line with the average cost of eye surgery, but not quite as low as Optical Express.
Treatments Offered
You can count on Ultralase for the main laser eye and lens replacement surgery procedures. These include: LASIK and LASEK with Wavefront options, as well as refractive lens exchange (RLE), implantable contact lenses, and cataract surgery.
Is Ultralase Right for You?
With nearly 3,000 overall positive reviews from independent customers in the UK, Ultralase is one of the best-rated laser eye surgery clinics by patients. People value this clinic for its:
- Friendly prices – Fixed and reasonable prices help you know what to expect.
- Nationwide clinics – Ultralase has 20 clinics in the UK, including in London, Reading and St Albans.
- Decent aftercare – Ultralase provides free aftercare – one check-up and drops for the first three months.
Despite glowing reviews, however, it’s worth reading the fine print if you do choose Ultralase. In 2015, BBC’s Watchdog exposed the problems countless laser eye surgery patients have experienced accessing their lifelong aftercare.
Most user reviews on Lasik Eyes show happy experiences, but then again most people never need to take advantage of their lifetime guarantee. If you would like to find out whether Ultralase is the top-rated laser eye surgery clinic near you, we’re here to help.

On the 27th December 2002 I attended the Birmingham clinic for an assessment for laser suitability. On the 2nd January 2003 I attended the Bristol Clinic and was looked after by Mr. David Smail MBBS, FRCOphth. The reason for writing is to ask you to forward my sincere and grateful thanks to all at the Birmingham clinic but in particular Barbara Adams (Patient Advisor) for the care afforded me. Excellence is an understatement. I would also ask that you give equal thanks to the staff at Bristol but a sincere and almost tearful and emotional thanks to David my surgeon, what a super job to have to give back sight which I only dreamed of. David I will always be indebted to you, THANK YOU. The above text is an extract of a letter I sent to both the Bristol and Birmingham clinic just a couple of days after having my "Laser eye correction surgery" it is now almost eight weeks post op and feel that I should add further. I am not just 100% satisfied with the results but 200% (if that is possible) I wake every day with the feeling of "how good it is to be alive" gone are the days scrambling about looking for my glasses in the early morning to see what time it is? cleaning my glasses after being out in the rain and getting back in the car. Oh and don't forget when its cold outside returning to a warm moist room and your glasses mist over, All of the above hassle has now GONE. Now the best bits, nearly every one I meet have said that not wearing glasses has taken years off me and although I have a colour perception problem, colours look more vibrant, my reasoning for this is because I am not looking through an additional source. I spend considerable time both driving and using the computer. Driving is now a pleasure and I can even slip my designer sun glasses" on occasionally. As for the computer? I have worn bi-focals for nearly 21 years and the amount of neck ache I have suffered over this time doesn't bear thinking about, well now I can look straight at the screen without having to tilt my head back, SHEER HEAVEN. Since being introduced to "Ultralase" I have promoted them at every opportunity and will continue do so in the future, they are nothing short of miracle makers backed up by pure professionalism. A superb team. John Reynolds 01527 457777 John Reynolds

I had surgery on 13 February at the Leeds clinic with Dr Cohen. I was about -6 in both eyes with a small degree of astigmatism and am now close to 20/20 vision in both eyes. I did however have an infection in my right eye after the surgery which became apparent when I went back for my 24 hour check up on 14 Feb. I couldn't feel or see this but immediately I saw the surgeon again who changed the type and frequency of my drops and asked to see me on 15 Feb (Saturday). I saw him then and again on 16 Feb (Sunday) when he confirmed the infection was clearing up but to be on the safe side I saw Dr Cohen again on Tuesday 18 Feb and again today 20 Feb with a new appointment booked for a weeks time though I have been given the all clear today. Seeing Dr Cohen so frequently (at his request) gave me real confidence that firstly I was in the right hands and secondly that the problem would be sorted. The level of aftercare could not have been better or the staff more caring and basically I'm dead chuffed with the results and looking forward to wearing mascara again...

Michael - I had LASIK at Chester last Friday (14th) performed by Dr. Joachim Koehler. He was excellent and so were all the staff at the clinic. He advised me that he has performed laser surgery on over 6500 patients and I had every confidence in him.

I had the surgery about 3yrs ago now, and have had no problems at all. The treatment was quick and painless, the recovery time was a matter of hours and the results have been great. I've suffered no after effects at all and now have 20/20 vision for the first time since I was 8! The consultants were very honest about the risks involved and I felt very informed the whole way through - I felt in very safe hands. I'd recommend anyone to find out about the surgery, but to be aware that there are risks!

Jeannette/Karen (and anyone else) - if you remove SPAMPROOF from the end, you will have the right address to email each other - it's done as a protection from spam machines! Has anyone any experience Dr Joachim Koehler. It seems like everyone is hankering for Mr Gupta's services wherever they are in the country

It is now 5 days since I had my surgery and all seems to be going very well. I've been back in the office today and the dry atmosphere & lap top are making my eyes a bit sore so I'm off home shortly! However, apart from the first couple of hours after the procedure this is the first time I can honestly say I've felt any discomfort. Apparently the flaps had healed back very well within the first 24 hours and my eyesight was back to 6:6 and OK for driving. I had a great deal of watering & discomfort in the first few hours but that settled down very quickly. It's really odd getting used to being able to see for the first time in nearly 40 years - although I'm not getting the full effect as I am still wearing clear glasses during the day and eye protectors at night. I have got some slight blurring and starbursts when driving at night but the surgeon said this was very likely as I had mixed astigmatism and large pupils. Apparently it will take up to 3 months for my eyes to settle before I get the full benefits, however, thus far I'm very pleased. My surgeon was Susanna Boytha and I can recommend her direct, informative and professional approach, very reassuring!! In fact all of the staff at Ultralase were very good, there was absolutely no pressure and I felt very confident that they knew what they were doing and would not have recommended me for treatment if they were not confident of a sucessful outcome. PS I was treated at the St Albans Clinic!!!

I am concerned about latest comments on side effects of laser treatment. I am due to have surgery at Birmingham with Matthew Starr. His resume seems to be A1. Has anyone had any experiences of his surgery? Has anyone had treatment who has large pupils? It seems that a lot of the negative press at the moment relates to people that have larger than average pupil size. Would love to hear all comments please.
Karen
Jeanette I too am due to have surgery in Bham with Matthew Star on 27th Feb. (Have just tried to Email you but mail failed?)Pupil size was not mentioned but I was told I had lovely thick corneas which would heal well. Watchdog are doing a feature on their programme tonight. Should be worth watching

I can honestly say that this corrective Surgury does work., I had this done about end of 1995, from what I can remember, and my eyes are fine, and still good eyesite 8 years after the operation, and the recovery time was relative quick, So after all this time I can give a huge thumbs up.
Josephine
I'm due to have a consultation and surgery (provisionally booked) in the Leeds city centre clinic next week (11 and 13 February 2003) with Dr Gilbert Cohen. I'd love to hear any feedback from anyone who has used Ultralase in Leeds and particularly if Dr Cohen carried out the surgery. Many thanks.
