The first Ultralase clinic was opened in January 1991 at the Clatterbridge Hospital near Chester. At the time, all treatments performed were Photorefractive Keratotomy, or PRK, until the Lasik procedure was introduced in 1995.

With the introduction of Lasik, and the clear advantages it demonstrated for certain patients, Ultralase went through a period of dramatic growth through 2002.

2003 Ultralase introduced the revolutionary UltraPlus treatment with Wavefront technology, giving patients visual outcomes far surpassing those of standard laser treatments. Ultralase became the first provider to have all treatment outcomes verified by independent audit.

In March 2009, the commitment to clinical excellence led Ultralase to become the first UK provider to have all Great Britain surgeons certified in Laser Refractive Surgery by the Royal College of Ophthalmologists (RCOphth).

Ultralase Prices

Ultralase comes in second place in our list of the best laser eye surgery clinics in the UK for price, just after Optical Express. That’s because this clinic offers the full shebang: transparent prices, 0% finance options, free consultations, and competitive prices.

The cost of eye surgery at Ultralase ranges between £1,1695 and £2,995 (per eye), depending on the treatment type that you agree upon in discussion with a surgeon. These prices are in line with the average cost of eye surgery, but not quite as low as Optical Express.

Treatments Offered

You can count on Ultralase for the main laser eye and lens replacement surgery procedures. These include: LASIK and LASEK with Wavefront options, as well as refractive lens exchange (RLE), implantable contact lenses, and cataract surgery.

Is Ultralase Right for You?

With nearly 3,000 overall positive reviews from independent customers in the UK, Ultralase is one of the best-rated laser eye surgery clinics by patients. People value this clinic for its:

  • Friendly prices – Fixed and reasonable prices help you know what to expect.
  • Nationwide clinics – Ultralase has 20 clinics in the UK, including in London, Reading and St Albans.
  • Decent aftercare – Ultralase provides free aftercare – one check-up and drops for the first three months.

Despite glowing reviews, however, it’s worth reading the fine print if you do choose Ultralase. In 2015, BBC’s Watchdog exposed the problems countless laser eye surgery patients have experienced accessing their lifelong aftercare.

Most user reviews on Lasik Eyes show happy experiences, but then again most people never need to take advantage of their lifetime guarantee. If you would like to find out whether Ultralase is the top-rated laser eye surgery clinic near you, we’re here to help.

I had my procedure in August 2002 at Ultralase. I have no problems at all since. My left eye has gone from -6.5 to -0.25 and my right eye from -6.0 to 0.0. My vision is excellent. The procedure was less scary than I'd imagined. The after "sales" support was very good too. I was hit in the eye with a tennis ball a few months after my proceudre and I went back to have a check up. Thankfully my eye was OK. All in all this was a great thing to do. I wish it had been available years ago.

Being slightly nervous, it took me nearly 6 months to find the courage to go through with the treatment. The Ultralase staff were supportive and at no time did they apply any pressure. My treatment was 1st class. It has completely changed my life and I still consider it a miracle when I get up in the morning and no longer need my specs. I can read the bottom line on the eye chart which I think is pretty good! I will continue to reccomend Ultralase whenever I can. Thank you for all you have done for me.

The only time in my entire life I have been so happy about spending around a thousand pounds is on Ultralase laser eye treatment. I have no regrets and i still to this day remind myself that it was worth every single penny as it has completely changed my life.

I went into laser surgery with some trepidation as I thought "what if something goes wrong" but I need not have worried. The operation was swift and painless and the very next day my eyes were 20/20. No more glasses. I now enjoy scuba diving all the more . Definitely worth it

I had laser surgery in August 2002. I experienced excellent service from consultant, through treatment to after care. It has made a huge difference to my life, especially as I can spend more quality time with my little boy without having my spex knocked off or the legs pulled apart. I also play golf - no more wipers on my spex when its raining. The treatment itself was painless and over in minutes and after one night I had almost clear vision. I would recommed Ultralse to anyone and have already done so. I personally wish I could have had it done sooner, it has totally changed my life. 3 cheers for Ultralase.

While initially nervous on my first appointment, any fears were soon forgotten in the hands the staff who were true professionals. On the day of the treatment i was amazed that within one hour i could read the eyesight chart to driving test standard with both eyes having been short sighted for most of my life.I am now free of the daily chore of using and cleaning contact lenses & searching for glasses and can see who waves hello across the pub bar instead of having to guess.Since the day of my treatment my vision has improved even further and i can also read & write without glasses which in my work as a police officer is invaluable. Friends who were waiting for my reslults & feedback prior to committing themselves to laser eye surgery have since had treatment & all have been amazed with the results agreeing that it was money well spent & a life changing experience.

I had laser eye surgery at Ultralase Manchester on Thursday the 17th December 2004. My prescritpion beforehand was -2 in both eyes. I can say for sure that now I have better than 20-20 vision. I noticed this WITHIN an hour after the surgery itself! The next day I had a check up and I could read the bottom line of the eye chart. I cant say that LASIK will work this well for everybody as everybody responds to it differently, but in my case it was a miracle. I have no problems with glare or 'halos' and no marking or itching or dry eyes. I can say I have been extremely fortunate. Highly reccomended service from Ultralase.

I was -8 before this op at Guildford: now I can see two lines below the magic 20/20 vision I was after. The staff warned me I would need glasses afterwards for reading - I even bought them in preparation: don't need them at all! I completely underestimated how fantastic this surgery would make me feel: I can now use my eyes to communicate, I can see first thing in the morning, I have peripheral vision again - I feel as though my visual field has doubled. One other thing that's worth thinking about. I am a physio - I treat lots of people with neck pain and headaches: I was suffering from these myself every day. Since I had my eyes lasered I haven't had a single headache because I have stopped craning my neck to see things. I highly recommend this procedure!

I had my surgery at Ultralase bham in May 2002 and would star rate it 4. My concerns are about my vision now however because I find my vision is not how it was after the surgery. I would appreciate any similar findings with anyone who has had the surgery.

I had Lasik last February at Ultralase Manchester by Andrea Kerr. Some 11 months on I am really pleased that I had the treatment and got over my initial fears of having surgery on my eyes. I feel that often a lot of the comments on here are submitted in the euphoria of suddenly being able to see again without glasses or lenses. The true test is 6 months, 1 year, 5 years down the line. I had real problems for the first couple of months with bright lights, especially when driving. However this settled down by the summer and is now not an issue. One of the things I have noticed is that at night I have felt that my vision when driving was not as good as it was before (when using glasses). This though seems to be improving and is not an issue now. My impression of Ultralase was positive despite going back several times in the first few months re the bright light issue. I feel that the decision to have the treatment and where you are treated is very much a personal one and everyone needs to make their own decision based on how they feel about the surgery and also the clinic.
