The first Ultralase clinic was opened in January 1991 at the Clatterbridge Hospital near Chester. At the time, all treatments performed were Photorefractive Keratotomy, or PRK, until the Lasik procedure was introduced in 1995.

With the introduction of Lasik, and the clear advantages it demonstrated for certain patients, Ultralase went through a period of dramatic growth through 2002.

2003 Ultralase introduced the revolutionary UltraPlus treatment with Wavefront technology, giving patients visual outcomes far surpassing those of standard laser treatments. Ultralase became the first provider to have all treatment outcomes verified by independent audit.

In March 2009, the commitment to clinical excellence led Ultralase to become the first UK provider to have all Great Britain surgeons certified in Laser Refractive Surgery by the Royal College of Ophthalmologists (RCOphth).

Ultralase Prices

Ultralase comes in second place in our list of the best laser eye surgery clinics in the UK for price, just after Optical Express. That’s because this clinic offers the full shebang: transparent prices, 0% finance options, free consultations, and competitive prices.

The cost of eye surgery at Ultralase ranges between £1,1695 and £2,995 (per eye), depending on the treatment type that you agree upon in discussion with a surgeon. These prices are in line with the average cost of eye surgery, but not quite as low as Optical Express.

Treatments Offered

You can count on Ultralase for the main laser eye and lens replacement surgery procedures. These include: LASIK and LASEK with Wavefront options, as well as refractive lens exchange (RLE), implantable contact lenses, and cataract surgery.

Is Ultralase Right for You?

With nearly 3,000 overall positive reviews from independent customers in the UK, Ultralase is one of the best-rated laser eye surgery clinics by patients. People value this clinic for its:

  • Friendly prices – Fixed and reasonable prices help you know what to expect.
  • Nationwide clinics – Ultralase has 20 clinics in the UK, including in London, Reading and St Albans.
  • Decent aftercare – Ultralase provides free aftercare – one check-up and drops for the first three months.

Despite glowing reviews, however, it’s worth reading the fine print if you do choose Ultralase. In 2015, BBC’s Watchdog exposed the problems countless laser eye surgery patients have experienced accessing their lifelong aftercare.

Most user reviews on Lasik Eyes show happy experiences, but then again most people never need to take advantage of their lifetime guarantee. If you would like to find out whether Ultralase is the top-rated laser eye surgery clinic near you, we’re here to help.

My choice of Ultralase was only made after some extensive research. I had intended to go to Bristol but due to their popularity it was very difficult to get an appointment. So?? Off to Cardiff I went!! From the moment I booked my appointment I was massively impressed with Ultralase. The person on the phone was very knowledgeable and I received confirmation of my appointment the next day. The day of the consultation went smoothly. I was there for 2 hours going from test-to-test and having the staff explaining in great and glorious detail what the treatment involved. It did not take much persuasion to "go for it". Less than 2 weeks later I was back for the big day. Was I nervous?? You betcha!! I was mostly worried about the creation of the corneal flap. I saw my surgeon first for a check of my prescription. Then - off I went!! A talk by one of the nurses explaining the aftercare. I explained my nervousness about the corneal flap - her response?? Hold my hand (was I ever pleased for that offer!!) The treatment was unbelievable. Quick! Painless! Almost immediate improvement!! 30 minutes and both eyes were done! That night my eyes felt quite grainy (like having dust in my eyes) - the next morning (12 hours later and?? I COULD SEE!! My checkup the next day showed that I had already had better than 20/20 vision!! Before the treatment I couldn't even make out the eye chart - now?? Brilliant. Would I recommend Ultralase? Certainly!! Why? Totally professional, sympathetic of a customer's worries, caring people and the treatment is second to none!! If you're going to do it - do it with Ultralase!!

I was encouraged to have treatmet by members of my family, but kept putting it offdue to being afraid - I am a very nervous patient. When my younger sister had her eyes succesfully treated I decided that if she could do it, so could I and I made an appointment at my local clinic. The staff where very informative and extremely kind. The care throughout the procedure was excellent, a nurse even held my hand, and I can honestly say that the procedure was not at all painful, and certainly nothing for me to have been worried about. I am absolutely delighted with the results. It's great not havng to mess around with lenses in the mornings and evenings and I had much more room in my holiday suitcase without my prescription sunglasses and various contact lens solutions! I am realy pleased that I have had the treatment and would encourage anyone who is a little nervous to go for it.

I had my eyes lasered at the Chelmsford Ultralase clinic back in April of this year. My aunt had previously had her's done at the Birmingham clinic and my mum also at Chelmsford. I saw the difference the treatment had made to my mum and decided to go for a consultation myself. The staff at the clinic were fantastic, explaining exactly what the treatment would involve and the possible side effects. Once it had been confirmed that I was a suitable candidate, I desperately wanted to go ahead with the treatment. However, the problem was that I was at university in Birmingham and only home for a couple of weeks for the Easter holidays. When I explained this to the staff at the clinic, they created a special appointment, allowing me to have the surgery when it was convenient to me. They also booked my follow-up appointments for times when I was home. One of my major concerns about having the surgery was that I'm still only 22 and that my eyesight may deteriorate as I grow older. The doctors reassured me by informing me that I would be able to have surgery again in a few years time if this was the case. I couldn't be more pleased with the results and the service I received from the Chelmsford clinic. Whilst the operation was quite uncomfortable, it lasted only a few minutes and when I woke up the next morning my vision was near perfect and continued to improve over the next few days. Since my treatment, the difference it has made to my life has been brilliant. My motivation for having the operation was a charity trip to Malaysia that I'm about to partake in. I'm really looking forward to trekking through the jungle and scuba diving without the hassle of glasses or contact lenses. I would thoroughly recommend Ultralase to anyone who is considering having laser surgery. Every step of the way, the staff have been fantastic and the difference it has made to my life is unbelievable!

My sister had her eyes treated first and was so happy with the result that I decided to have mine done. This year, for the first time on holiday, I was able to swim in the sea and find my way back to my belongings on the beach. I was so enthusiatic that I encouraged my two short-sighted daughters to be treated. We all enjoy the freedom that not having to wear spectacles and contact lenses now brings. It really has changed all our lives! I found the treatment totally painless and I could see by the time I left the clinic. The whole procedure was explained fully and clearly and the aftercare was excellent. I totally recommend Ultralase!

I was worried about having the treatment but reassured by the consultation. I was warned of possible glare and halo effects due to my having large pupils, but haven't really noticed much difference. The benefits of not wearing glasses any more are fantastic - swimming, holidays, no more wiping glasses off in the rain or on cold days. It's the best money I've ever spent! I would recommend this treatment to anyone who is suitable. I found many scare stories on the web before I had my treatment but these seemed to be from people who should never have been treated in the first place. However, don't be fooled - the treatment itself is not painless, I had about 4 hours of discomfort after the treatment and about 2 weeks where my eyes were quite dry but this was no worse than wearing contact lenses. The benefits far outway the unpleasantness of the treatment and I wouldn't let it put you off!

I was refused laser eye treatment at ultralase 3 and a half years ago due to having extrememly thin, steep corneas and an unusual prescription (-7, -7 myopia with +3.5 and +3.75 astigmatism) I was devastated but understood that it was in my best interest at the time. Then a year ago I was contacted by Ultralase who advised me to return for a 2nd consultation now that technology had moved on and could maybe make me now a suitable candidate. I am so pleased I acted upon this phonecall and I was told 3 weeks ago at my 2nd consultation with Ultralase that I was now indeed a suitable candidate for treatment. My treatment was 5 days ago and I am over the moon with the results. I was a borderline case and was extremely nervous about the whole matter due to this but I went ahead and am amazed at my eyesight now only 5 days on. Ultralase have been first class. I have been given great service, everyone is really friendly, helpful and they act with your best interests at heart. Thank you for providing me with the ability to see and for truly great service!! I have worn glasses for 23 years and it's a dream come true!!!! :o)))

Words cannot express the gratitude I feel towards Ultralase. From my initial consultation through to my discharge I have been treated with kindness and total professionalism. I cannot recommend Ultralase enough.

I have worn soft contact lenses for 20 years but over the last year or so I have found them increasingly uncomfortable and would often have to leave one or both of them out for a couple of days to let my eyes settle down and hated wearing specs in the meantime. So I took the plunge..... Had Wavefront on 6th August and am SO glad it's all over. I went to Ultralase in Bristol and had been advised to go to a few consultations before deciding, but to be honest, I was so impressed with the people and service I received at Ultralase that I decided not to bother getting 2nd opinions. All very professional. I had the consultation on the Tuesday and was booked in for the procedure on the Friday (I was desperate to get rid of stupid glasses). The consultation took about 2 hours and was very thorough. I was told I was a suitable candidate and was talked through the 3 types of procedures available - Lasik, Lasik Plus and Lasik Ultra (Wavefront). I had originally budgeted for the straight forward Lasik (£995 an eye) but discussing it with my husband on the way home, he said that I was only going to have this done once, so best to have the most accurate so I decided to go with the wavefront. However, when I mentioned this to the surgeon pre-op he said I could only have this done if my cornea was thick enough (it was) so it was actually re-assuring to know that they don't just want you to have the most expensive as it really does depend on whether the surgeon thinks you will benefit from it. On the day of the surgery I was very calm cos so desperate to get rid of specs. However, in the nurse prep room I started to get jittery and by the time I was led in I felt like a 10 yr old girl - totally terrified. The actual procedure only took about 3 mins an eye which seems like 3 hours when you are as scared as I was. The nurse was so sweet and held my hand throughout (I'm surprised she had any blood flow left after I'd squeezed it to death!). Was in the recovery room resting my eyes for about half an hour and then discharged. Eyes just felt a bit gritty, not painful and so when I got home I went to bed for a few hours just to give my eyes a rest. 24 hrs after the op my vision was vastly improved although still a bit hazy but I was up and about as normal. By the evening I was a bit gritty again and wore sunglasses all the time. However, it's now 10 days post-op and I had my check up a couple of days ago and my sight is 20/20. They say with wavefront my sight will continue to improve for about 6 weeks and at the moment my left eye is slightly weaker than my right, but with both eyes I can see like the bionic woman!! Alot of money, but I would recommend it to anyone. Feel the Fear and Do it Anyway.

The treatment and service I have received from Ultralase has been exceptional. I felt at ease during the whole process. I also found it reassuring that many of the staff have had the treatment themselves. After visiting a number of clinics Ultralase was definately the best!
