The first Ultralase clinic was opened in January 1991 at the Clatterbridge Hospital near Chester. At the time, all treatments performed were Photorefractive Keratotomy, or PRK, until the Lasik procedure was introduced in 1995.

With the introduction of Lasik, and the clear advantages it demonstrated for certain patients, Ultralase went through a period of dramatic growth through 2002.

2003 Ultralase introduced the revolutionary UltraPlus treatment with Wavefront technology, giving patients visual outcomes far surpassing those of standard laser treatments. Ultralase became the first provider to have all treatment outcomes verified by independent audit.

In March 2009, the commitment to clinical excellence led Ultralase to become the first UK provider to have all Great Britain surgeons certified in Laser Refractive Surgery by the Royal College of Ophthalmologists (RCOphth).

Ultralase Prices

Ultralase comes in second place in our list of the best laser eye surgery clinics in the UK for price, just after Optical Express. That’s because this clinic offers the full shebang: transparent prices, 0% finance options, free consultations, and competitive prices.

The cost of eye surgery at Ultralase ranges between £1,1695 and £2,995 (per eye), depending on the treatment type that you agree upon in discussion with a surgeon. These prices are in line with the average cost of eye surgery, but not quite as low as Optical Express.

Treatments Offered

You can count on Ultralase for the main laser eye and lens replacement surgery procedures. These include: LASIK and LASEK with Wavefront options, as well as refractive lens exchange (RLE), implantable contact lenses, and cataract surgery.

Is Ultralase Right for You?

With nearly 3,000 overall positive reviews from independent customers in the UK, Ultralase is one of the best-rated laser eye surgery clinics by patients. People value this clinic for its:

  • Friendly prices – Fixed and reasonable prices help you know what to expect.
  • Nationwide clinics – Ultralase has 20 clinics in the UK, including in London, Reading and St Albans.
  • Decent aftercare – Ultralase provides free aftercare – one check-up and drops for the first three months.

Despite glowing reviews, however, it’s worth reading the fine print if you do choose Ultralase. In 2015, BBC’s Watchdog exposed the problems countless laser eye surgery patients have experienced accessing their lifelong aftercare.

Most user reviews on Lasik Eyes show happy experiences, but then again most people never need to take advantage of their lifetime guarantee. If you would like to find out whether Ultralase is the top-rated laser eye surgery clinic near you, we’re here to help.

The initial consultation gave me great confidence that I chose the right people to help me to correct my vision, the treatment was painless and I was surprised how quickly my vision got better. This is the first time since I was 8 that I don't have to wake up looking for my glasses! Amazing service! Thank you very much!!

From consultation to aftercare, the service I received at Ultralase was excellent. I no longer need to wear glasses and my vision is better than 20/20. I am thrilled and would recommend Ultralase to anyone!

Fantastic service from Ultralase Birmingham - I had Intralase ULP with Wavefront on November 8th and I didn't think my sight would ever be this good again!! I HIGHLY RECOMMEND!

Definitely a worth while investment. One of the best things I have ever done. My eyes are no near perfecy and it went so well I really took it for granted over the last six months as I didn't have any problemes at all. It's great not having to think about glasses or contact lenses anymore and it's brilliant having the freedom. Thank you!!

This was something I've wanted for a long time and the wait was worth it. I had very bad vision for a long time and now I can see better than ever - better than I used to with glasses or contacts. Recovery was very swift and the ability to see unaided is fantastic. All the consultants, staff and the surgeon were immense and it couldn't have gone better. I wholly recommend the surgery.

I had Lasek carried out at the St Albans clinic on 28/April. So far, I have been really pleased with the service I have received on all but one occassion I have been called back when I've needed to speak to someone and they have always been very helpful. Although it's still very early days I am pleased with the results. The staff at the clinic have reassured me all the way, even when I burst into tears in fear before signing the consent form, not once did I feel under any pressure to proceed.

I had both eyes done six months ago. One has good vision, not quite as good as with my contacts but perfectly OK. The other is still a bit blurry but improving very slowly. I think the one thing I have to say is that you are not sufficiently warned about the pain after the procedure. 'Discomfort' hardly covers it! I couldn't open my eyes for three days and it was real head banging pain. I think it was well worth it but feel the clinic where I went - Guildford - did not make this clear enough.

I had laser surgery (Ultralasik Plus) a month ago at the Hammersmith clinic with Mr Gupta. Before that, my prescription was -6 in one eye and -6.25 with astigmatism in the other eye, so I couldn't leave the house without either glasses or lenses. I found Ultralase very professional, and their customer service was excellent (I'd also gone for a consultation with Optical Express but found them too pushy). I was really nervous just before having it done but, as most people have said, it doesn't hurt - the only uncomfortable part was the feeling of pressure when they did my left eye. (And don't worry about asking someone to hold your hand, as I did!) Afterwards, their literature said that patients would be taken to the "post-treatment lounge" but instead I was taken to the general waiting room, which I thought was a little disappointing. After having surgery and paying so much money, I'd have appreciated a private place to lie down and recover for 15 minutes, rather than a seat in a room where anyone could walk in from the street. In fact, I decided not to go to another (cheaper) clinic partly because of that reason, so it was a little annoying! A bit of advice: try bringing some mints with you, as you can taste the eye drops they give you in the back of your throat and they're really bitter! Once I got home, I rested for most of the evening, in between applying eye drops (I found it very useful having someone else to put in my eye drops the first few times). I'd been preparing myself for pain, but there was very little discomfort at all. In fact the most uncomfortable part of the day was sitting in the air-conditioned waiting room after I'd had surgery and feeling cold!! The next day was great - I could read car number plates, and when I got back to the clinic they said I had 20-20 vision! I was on a real high that day and kept exclaiming at the things I could see - passers-by must have thought I was mad. Since then it's become obvious that while my left eye is great, my right eye isn't so good - everything looks darker through it, things are more blurred, there's still astigmatism, and also haze/starbursts around lights. I was hoping this eye would catch up with the left eye, but so far it's not happened. So be prepared for the chance that you might end up with different vision in both eyes. But overall, I'm really glad I had it done. I feel more confident without glasses, and it's great not to have the inconvenience and discomfort of lenses. And getting rid of the glasses I'd had to wear since I was nine was a wonderful moment!

It has been a month since I got LASIK with wavefront done on both my eyes in the Manchester clinic. I was -5 in one eye and -5.5 in the other. I have 20/20 vision now thanks to Ultralase. Although this I will only know for sure when my eye sight settles down after 3 months. They are quite expensive but when it comes to eyes I dont think I wanted to take any risks. They have been quite professional and if I have had any slightest of problems they have helped me out. I find their customer service to be marvellous. This helps a lot for a person like me who panics on the slightest of things! They have always made me feel comfortable and welcome even after the surgery. I would highly recommend Ultralase to anyone who is thinking of getting this done. They are the best! Thank you Ultralase.

This is just a note of caution amongst all these hugely postive notes. I had Lasek for -4.25 / -1.50 astigmatism in oth eyes on 3 March 2006 and am having significant problems entering week 8, and I am not totally re-assured by Ultralase's treatment to date. My right eye's epithelial took 5 wks to heal which is apparently very long; at that point I was about 20/20 in my left but had -1.75 in my right eye. Since then both eyes have regressed due to corneal haze according to Vinod Gupta my surgeon. I have been told to wait anotehr month for a checkup and that this could take up to 12 months to clear. Ultralase haev supplied no other info on other similar cases and can't give any guess as to how long this situation will persist -- I think they are guessing. I feel as if they could at least do some research among other professionals / publications to check this out and give me more feedback. It's very alarming to have your vision slip back after surgery with no real explanation or prognosis. In retrospect for Lasek I wold ask mroe about the surgeon's experience with hazing / corneal scarring, the frequencey it has happened and the time it took to clear. To anyone considering Lasek I would just say, despite all the rave reviews there are some real risks the results of which I am having to deal with after two months with the prospect of another 10 months or potentially longer and even then my sight may need further treatment. And that without a whole lot of back-up from Ultralase who don't appear to be that worried about my situation.
