4. The Verdict
I am really happy with the results. Apart from the machine not working and the long wait, the staff at this Optimax were really nice, friendly and helpful, as was Dr Patel. I would recommend this Optimax. – Tina Gibson

Most patients we spoke to were happy with the service. However, the long waiting times and poor communication mean this clinic misses the top spots on the list of the best laser eye surgery clinics in the UK. Still, Optimax makes it into these top lists:

lens replacement went well. Following that I needed remediation treatment on one eye – lazer treatment. I was asked back a total of 8 times to review my eyes but was not explained anything about what or why I should have dry eyes. treat ment for that was hardly explained and I returned many ties without any further treatment scheduled, nor with any explanation of how they would proceed. after a year almost to the day I was given lazer remediation treatment. On the day all the proper tests were carried out before the treatment. However I overheard that my data had crashed to computer which instructed the lazer what to do. Finally after 3 and a half hours someone came to me and said they had solved their”little ” problem and work would now commence. I was really scared by the time I sat in the chair for my eye to be lazered (!) and had to say to the doctor that I just had to trust his expertise that he would not proceed if anything was wrong.
Terrible after care service and lack of information. I wrote complaining to them on March1st (I think) and still have had only an acknowledgement, but no reply to my complaiint. Outrageous! Would not reccommend to anyone.

Just to add a couple of comments regarding my lasik with Dr Patel, its now been 3 days, and my right eye is perfect (was -6) and my left is still teh same as it was after the op (about -0.75/-1). I find it very difficult to focus on my computer screen as my left eye seems to ruin my vision when i look at things with both eyes. I would love to hear from others who had one eye perfected but the other not so good, and would like to know if it became better within time. Its such a shame, because the whole point is ruined as i saw better WITH glasses. Especially close up reading and computer work (im only 27 years old so close range should not be a problem). Its because of one eye not being as sharp. Will it get better, even though its been the same since the op?

Hi, I just thought some younger people (25>) might be intersted to know how my op went etc on 12th Feb. I'm only 20 (the youngest age the procedure can be done- too young for ultra lase) and was explained that my eyes are "relatively" stable for someone of my age. I was about -7.5 in both eyes and have so far had pretty good success. Went back for sight test next day and comfortably had 20/20 vision (read all but bottom line of chart). A week later - further improvement (including bottom line) and given the okay. Was told about the small posibilty of having night vision problems (glare round street lights etc). Since the op I did start noticing glare etc at night - but I wouldn't have called it a problem. However, in the last few days this has calmed down and I didn't even notice it once today driving at night. It does sound as though I had a comparitivley quick recovery - which I was told was due to my age and pretty good health and fitness etc. Would certainly recommend it to anyone of similiar age (if eyes are relativley stable) as younger people appear to be in a better position regarding recovery/healing etc. A second advantage is obviously the fact that I've hopefully now got 25 years+ of good eyesight (before reading glasses) as opposed to someone 30 who has 10 years less benefit. Overall, Happy with Optimax: -Consultation - good, but felt a little "slap dash". -Operation - excellent, surgeon constantly telling me

Short update on my peepers!! I had surgery on the 6th Feb @ Liverpool (see previous posting). Today is the first day I have not had bad eye strain at work or driving followed by headaches and eyes feeling like a bloodhounds! (and not looking far off either). The past two weeks at work has been a "big" struggle, with close up vision very difficult, I have just felt exhausted and like my contacts were in and needed to come out for a clean and give my eyes a rest, only I cant do that now. If I was to have it done again, knowing how I have been this time I would take at least 3 weeks off my job, had never thought just how tiring eye strain is. I just saw the optimax ad and thought "oh, back at work the next day, thats good, well thats not how it worker for me". I have found using sunglasses when driving since the op a big help, not driving at night, using subtle lighting at home, avoiding smoky atmospheres and generally resting my eyes as much as possible has helped; and they are improving day by day-little by little. My long site is brilliant, like someone has turned on a light, I am still wandering round going OOOHHH!!!! Look!!! And day by day, little by little my short sight is improving. I dont expect it ever to be as sharp as it was, but you cant have both, and overall I am very very pleased and have done the highland jig on my redundant face furniture (:-

I had Lasek on 20.02.03 (Thursday) at Finchley Road by Dr. Ayoubi. I think waiting in the waiting room is the worst thing cos your thinking do i really want this done ? and loads and loads of what ifs go through your mind. Dr. Ayoubi spoke through all the things that could go wrong and was very helpful. The laser treatment did not hurt whatsoever and I am really wimpy. Dr Ayoubi talked through the whole thing and put me at ease. I walked out with one large bandage on one eye and one clear eye shield on the other. My husband said I was getting weird looks. All I could see was about a metre in front of me everything else was a blur. The pain killers (six tablets) however, for me, were not enough I had to ring my local doctor on Friday and ask for more, by Sunday the pain had eased a lot and by Monday I had nothing and could see loads. I kept feeling dizzy and felt faint a few times, but now I feel fine. My eyes sting a bit now and then and I cant see close up clearly yet but its only been a week and each day my close up vision gets more clearer.

Had my surgery on the 12th of February, conducted by D Masilami, Prescription was -2.50 left eye & -2.75 right eye. Treatment was no problem. Eyes uncomfortable for the first night even with the pain killers and sleeping tablets, Had my bandage lenses removed 3 days later. When removing the right hand lens had excruciating pain in the eye. Doctor put a few drops of anaesthetic and gave me the cream for home treatment After a week my left eye had perfect vision, the right lagging behind slightly Today had my first aftercare appointment, I am +0.50 in each eye, even though my left is far sharper in vision. It was explained that the left eye had healed better and had a smoother surface, the right eye should follow suit All in all worth every penny, just hope the right eye catches up with the left in clarity, please email me if you have had similar circumstances

I had my op yesterday afternoon with Dr Patel. I felt really bad yesterday,, but when I woke up today I felt marvellous. I could see with no glasses. My vision feels a wee bit strange. It feels as though I have my glasses on but they are not so clean and need a wipe. Anyway, I had my post check-up a couple of hours ago. My eyes were in both eyes -6.25. I asked for a quick eye check during my check-up and its now more or less 0 in my right eye and -0.75 in my left. I don't understand why my left is still quite high compared to my right. It is making me quite dizzy because its hard to focus when there is a difference of that size between left and right eyes. I hope my left eye becomes 0 too soon, but I don't know if this will happen. I will be grateful to hear from people in a similar situation... Maybe I should stop worrying and simply wait it out, as 1 day after the op might not be enough time to see, but because my right eye is now 0, I sort of expected my left to be good too.

I had my PRK treatment on Monday 17th Feb 2003 at the Manchester Clinic. I came out of the clinic looking like something out of the movie The Fly with big plastic pod like things stuck to my face!! To stop myself from scratching my eyes no doubt. I strongly recommend that you take all the pain killers on offer and also take the sleeping tablets as this is the only way I got any rest. The first couple days were a bit of a nightmare as I couldn't see very well and had a constant headache. Putting in the cream and eye drops is difficult if you are on your own, make sure someone is to hand to help you as I couldn't even see well enough to do this for myself. I do think that the 3 - 5 days recovery period is a bit unrealistic. During this time my eyes were constantly tired and I really struggled to keep them open. I am now on day 8 feeling much better and my vision is nothing short of fantastic. On the whole, I am definitely glad I went for it as unless you have worn glasses you will not know how wonderful it is to get up in a morning and actually see for a change.

Last posted 20th Feb I had my bandage contact lenses out on Saturday morning. Eyes were a bit sore for a couple of hours but soon settled down. I was not offered an opinion on how my eyes were doing (I guess I should have asked!). I'll ask when I go back on 2nd March. They seem OK except for a bit of ghosting in my left eye. I think you pretty much get what you pay for at Optimax. It is much cheaper than most other companies and gives you a no frills service. If you want pampering go elsewhere but if you just want the procedure with no fuss at a reasonable price I guess they are pretty good value.

I'm having lasik next Monday (3/3/03) at Finchley Road with Dr Almasri. Am really nervous now and was having doubts today but after wanting it for 7 years I'll defiantly go through with it. My prescription is -5R and -5.5L. I have quite large pupils so was told I have slightly more risk of side effects. Anyone else been told this? I'd appreciate an email from anyone with any advice or comments. And I'll let you know how it goes.

Had my bandage lens out today, eyes felt a bit gritty for about an hr after. Left eye was still blurry this morning, but now 9.30pm much better, almost as good as the right, not perfect but almost there. My first aftercare appointment is next week, shall let you know the full outcome then. Still very happy with Optimax.
