Athar Khatib came to Wales in 1975 having completed his Bachelor Degree in Medicine and Surgery at Nagpur, India and Postgraduate Degrees in Ophthalmology from Mumbai, India.

He commenced his UK Training in Ophthalmology at Middlesex Hospital, London. Whilst at the Eye Department at the University Hospital of Wales, he became a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons, Edinburgh in 1980 and later a Fellow of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists, London.

Mr Khatib was a Senior Registrar at St George’s Hospital, London and a Fellow at Moorfields Eye Hospital, London. He was appointed as Consultant Ophthalmologist at the British-run Riyadh Military Hospital in 1981 and later in Jeddah at the King Khalid National Guard Hospital, where he worked as Head of Department from 1987 until 1994. He then took up a NHS Consultant post at the Bridgend General Hospital and later at the Princess of Wales Hospital, Bridgend until January 2003.

His interest in Refractive Surgery dates from the 1980’s when he visited centres in the United States. Whilst working in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, Mr Khatib was privileged to be able to perform Refractive Surgery alongside pioneers of the field. After returning to Wales in 1994, he continued to promote and establish Refractive Surgery in Wales.

He has been an active Fellow of The American Academy of Ophthalmology since 1991 and is a member of the International Society of Refractive Surgery, United Kingdom and Ireland Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons, the British Refractive Society and the European Society for Cataract and Refractive Surgery. He has presented the audited results of LASIK (over 1000 in Wales) at various National and International meetings and reported results of Refractive Lens Exchange at the British Refractive Society.

Mr Khatib successfully established the first LASIK Centre in Wales, putting Wales on the world map of Refractive Surgery. His principal interest besides Refractive Surgery includes Small Incision Cataract Surgery and Refractive Lens Exchange Surgery.

He is also actively involved in community work as a member of the Council for the University of Wales, Lampeter and Vice President of the Welsh Centre for International Affairs, Cardiff. He also chairs the Health and Safety Committee at the University of Wales, Lampeter.

Mr Khatib lives in Llandaff, Cardiff with his wife (a Gynaecologist and an active supporter of his interest in Refractive and Cataract Surgery). They have three daughters. The eldest is reading Medicine in Oxford.

this is insane! -or i am very naive. i have your book how to udsrentand israel in 60 days or less and i really like it and i thought that if one can buy your stuff on amazon and find it in a german library that would mean that you can live quite comfortably of what you are doing. i hope that you soon start selling a million books. alternatively, come to berlin! it is probably the closest you can find to new york and it is sooooo cheap!

Excellant service from start to finish.Mr Khatib put me at ease with his knowledge of laser eye surgery.Have already recommended him to family.Having been initially apprehensive at first, due to unknown outcome, can't understand how i didn't have it done years ago.Only 2 weeks in and already making great strides. Can't wait for full effects to cut in,approx 6/12 weeks, what a summer this is going to be.

I spent a lot of time debating whether or not to have this treatment before eventually going ahead in October 2010. I obtained consultations from several clinics including a couple of High Street chains before deciding on the MDA clinic. This clinic was recommended to me by a work colleague who had been treated here and was very pleased with the results. My previous prescription was -1 in one eye and -4.5 in the other. I now have better than 20:20 vision. One year on from the surgery I am delighted with the results. I have not experienced any side effects. I was very happy with the service and care which I received and I would happily recommend them.
