The first Ultralase clinic was opened in January 1991 at the Clatterbridge Hospital near Chester. At the time, all treatments performed were Photorefractive Keratotomy, or PRK, until the Lasik procedure was introduced in 1995.
With the introduction of Lasik, and the clear advantages it demonstrated for certain patients, Ultralase went through a period of dramatic growth through 2002.
2003 Ultralase introduced the revolutionary UltraPlus treatment with Wavefront technology, giving patients visual outcomes far surpassing those of standard laser treatments. Ultralase became the first provider to have all treatment outcomes verified by independent audit.
In March 2009, the commitment to clinical excellence led Ultralase to become the first UK provider to have all Great Britain surgeons certified in Laser Refractive Surgery by the Royal College of Ophthalmologists (RCOphth).
Ultralase Prices
Ultralase comes in second place in our list of the best laser eye surgery clinics in the UK for price, just after Optical Express. That’s because this clinic offers the full shebang: transparent prices, 0% finance options, free consultations, and competitive prices.
The cost of eye surgery at Ultralase ranges between £1,1695 and £2,995 (per eye), depending on the treatment type that you agree upon in discussion with a surgeon. These prices are in line with the average cost of eye surgery, but not quite as low as Optical Express.
Treatments Offered
You can count on Ultralase for the main laser eye and lens replacement surgery procedures. These include: LASIK and LASEK with Wavefront options, as well as refractive lens exchange (RLE), implantable contact lenses, and cataract surgery.
Is Ultralase Right for You?
With nearly 3,000 overall positive reviews from independent customers in the UK, Ultralase is one of the best-rated laser eye surgery clinics by patients. People value this clinic for its:
- Friendly prices – Fixed and reasonable prices help you know what to expect.
- Nationwide clinics – Ultralase has 20 clinics in the UK, including in London, Reading and St Albans.
- Decent aftercare – Ultralase provides free aftercare – one check-up and drops for the first three months.
Despite glowing reviews, however, it’s worth reading the fine print if you do choose Ultralase. In 2015, BBC’s Watchdog exposed the problems countless laser eye surgery patients have experienced accessing their lifelong aftercare.
Most user reviews on Lasik Eyes show happy experiences, but then again most people never need to take advantage of their lifetime guarantee. If you would like to find out whether Ultralase is the top-rated laser eye surgery clinic near you, we’re here to help.

Ultralase Reviews

People who have had the treatment say I should had laser treatment years ago. I was skeptical but how true. I should have done it years ago. The change it has made to my vision is truly amazing. My advice to anyone thinking about laser treatment, stop thinking about, just do it. You will be pleasingly surprised.

From the moment I walked Ultralase I felt at home the staff were really welcoming. The consultation was 1st class. The treatment and after-care was also 1st class. I ride motorcycles for a living which when wearing glasses was burden. I am now free of that. Many thanks.

Thank you so much for giving me my perfect eyesight back! I have worn glasses for 20 years! It was like a ‘miracle’. Keep up the excellent service. Thank you all.

Having been wearing glasses for 15 years, having corrective surgery is a big decision. I am glad that I selected Ultralase to carry out the surgery. They provided a professional, friendly and efficient service and the results are excellent and life changing. I would recommend Ultralase and the treatment to family and friends.

I had my treatment at the Maidstone branch with Mr Ramanathan. At the initial appointment I had a very long serious of eye tests, some which had to be repeated as the machinery wouldn't seem to work. On the day of the treatment I was asked to arrive at 8am, my surgeon couldn't find the clinic, so I didn't get treated until 10.30am. (that's a long time to sit feeling nervous). The procedure went well, although I did struggle to understand what my surgeon was saying with his strong accent. I was taken through to the recovery room, where I spent all of 5 minutes before being asked if I was ready to leave. Personally, I felt like I should have sat and recovered for longer, but the 'assembly line' of waiting patients need my chair! Back at the car my vision was quite poor and it was painful to fully open my eyes. Back home I sat in a dark room with sunglasses and a black t-shirt over my eyes to try to relieve the brightness which was causing the pain. This continued for about 6 hours. By 5pm I could finally see properly, no discomfort or watering any more. I was able to drive within 24 hours, and was back at my computer screen the next day. I now have 20/20 vision which I am extremely pleased with. I just think that I would have liked to have sat and recovered for longer and the pre-op explanations should make you aware of how uncomfortable and painful your eyes will be immediately post-op. As a diver, who had previously needed a prescription dive mask, the freedom of 'natural' vision is just wonderful, and to risk sounding like a cliché, I wish I'd have done this years ago!

It seems that nowadays very few things live up to their sales pitch. My Ultralase experience pleasantly surprised me by exceeding my expectations. Everyone was understanding of the fact that all the patients have some worries. They were patient and happy to clear about what to expect, including the downsides (the discomfort after the operation, risks etc.) Six weeks after the operation, I already take my new found freedom from lenses granted. Thanks you all.

I am very pleased with the result; it means I can get on with diving without having a prescription mask.

I was particularly worried due to my insulin dependant diabetes, astigmatism and high prescription that I would not be suitable. It was terrific to be told I could have the surgery. I now have better than perfect vision (if possible) and extremely pleased with the results. A great experience and perfect results.

From the first contact to the day of operation, it was very quick and trouble free.

Don’t delay have it done. I had never thought about having laser treatment until my husband had his eyes corrected at Ultralase. Seeing what a difference it made to him, together with the results and after-care that Ultralase provided, I decided not to miss out. A year later I took the plunge at Nottingham and have never looked back. Neither of us had any problems, we both have great vision and cannot remember we ever wore glasses. I even had to tell my husband his idea was right!
