In the majority of cases you will need to be fully awake while receiving the laser treatment, your eye will be anaesthetized with an eye drops before the actual laser eye surgery begins. The reason you are kept awake is that you will be asked to stare at light before beginning of the procedure. The laser eye surgeon can carry out the eye surgery procedure more easily if the patient is able to fix his / her eyes on a particular object as it prevents certain complications as well as post-surgical discomforts.
During the process it is normal to experience various strange things happening, these will include blurred or hazy vision, smells and sounds. The noises are mostly from the laser.
To prevent any superficial damage caused by scratching etc the eye is sometime covered by a 'Contact Lens' bandage and more likely protective glasses. After the eye surgery, if the new flap used to protect the cornea has to be maintained in place and it is important that it is not dislodged by you rubbing your eyes.
After the laser eye surgery you should not swim or sit in a hot water tub for as long as eight weeks. During this period, you should not take part in contact sports or wear eye make-up.
To incorporate the flap fully with its new surroundings after the laser eye surgery, you will have to wear the protective shield in bed for up to four weeks.
