Hi I had lasik surgery @ Optimax London clinic on 4th Dec 2003 as of today 19th Dec 2004 my vision is still blurred as everything looks out of focus and black writing looks greyish. And when watching TV there is no sharpness in vision.I can only read second line on eye test chart and symptom is same in both eyes.I have been to clinic three times since surgery and seen Surgeon every time as I am worried. Dr says my recovery is very slow.I saw him last on 15th Dec .I had to have bandage lenses for one night and they were removed day after my surgery. I am not suffering from dry eyes symptom or any other symptoms. Has any body had similar symptoms in past and if so please let me know as I a ...  More...

I had bilateral lasek on Tuesday 18th Nov. The surgery, as expected was tense, but not painful (tense due to natural concerns). Slept most the day, on and off, and was glad I had my sister to stay with. No pain at all though, and I'm a bit of a weed! The most uncomfortable things were the contact lenses as I'm not used to wearing them. On Friday I went back in to get the lenses taken out and my first sight test....already at driving standard. Things have got better every night. I'm so pleased that I bit the bullet. I appreciate that my final prsciption will not be known for a couple of months, so fingers crossed. Dr Doyle came across as very capable, although he did not spend much ...  More...

I had bilateral LASEK at Optimax Manchester on the 1st of November. 2 things to say. 1) OUCH!!! & 2) WOW! The first 24 hours were terrible, probably similar to pouring extra hot chilli powder into your eyes. Every few minutes i had to pull my eyelids open to release the pressure caused by the build up of tears. The sleeping tablet helped and the next day was better. The pain didn't last long but it was very intense and not being able to rub your eyes doesn't help. Things might have been easier with bandage lenses but i wasn't able to go back to have them removed so I went without. Very light sensitive for a few days and still don't like bright lights now, 3 weeks on. Vision is excellent. Bet ...  More...

I am looking for someone to partner with for the 2-4-1 offer. I will be receiving Epiflap treatment in their London clinic but my partner can use any of their clinics at any time, all that matters is that our files are linked. Cost for both eyes will be 495 (PRK) + 5 credit card fee, Consultation costs 60, so, the total for both eyes will be 560. Please email me if interested in joining me on this deal.  More...

I want to do the 2-4-1 offer, but don't want to forfeit half the quality, so rather scared! If anyone can help it'd be most appreciated, thanks :)  More...

I am presently researching about PRK, as I would like to get it done myself. I have just read the following in Paul Hill's PRK Experience in the UK on the links page and i was wondering, out of those who have had the PRK procedure done, who agrees with this? "Short sighted people such as I (-2 dioptres) have very good macro sight (that is for distances closer then, say, 20inches) I've noticed that for distances further then this my treated eye is superior but for closer distances my untreated eye takes over. Using a highly accurate system (arular) I have found that my untreated eye can obtain sharp focus down to 3 inches (amazing) but my treated eye can only focus down to 4.5inches BUT th ...  More...

I had bi-lateral Lasik on Wednesday at Optimax in Ipswich. I had my post-operative check-up the day after and was told by the surgeon that I had a graze on each eye. I woke up on Friday with very hazy vision. I managed to see the surgeon at midday and was diagnosed as having DLK. I have been told to take steroid drops every 2 hours. Can anyone let me know if you have had similar problems and if so, how long the blurryness will last and if it caused any long-term complications. From Shirley  More...

Just a quick update on my experiences of bi-lateral lasek. I had it done at Optimax in southampton on 23/10 with Dr Ayoubi. He was very thorough and explained everything well. He went through the procedure and the after effects & I was perfectly happy to go ahead & get it done that day. The receptionists and assistants were all very nice & the clinic wasn't very busy. Procedure itself was as described, but a little weird to go through! Coming out of the treatment room with one eye bandaged up and the other with a plastic cover over gave my 2 year old boy a shock. They gave me 2 Solphadol (paracetamol & codiene) immediately after the treatment, and gave me the aftercare pack with lea ...  More...

I had LASEK treatment in June 2003 at the Southampton Branch of Optimax with Dr Ayoubi initially I got to a stage of having 20/20 vision in my left eye but within about 6 weeks I have a misting created by scar tissue which has caused everything to be very blurry. I've been given drops to try and clear up the misting which I need to take for 6 weeks but apparently in some patients can last for up to 3 years. Fingers crossed everything will be ok but as yet has no real improvement. My right eye is now good enough to meet driving standards. Steve.  More...

My friend and I are due to have bilateral lasik next month, and we are both starting to panic! We are booked into the Ipswich branch with Dr Fraschetti, I believe he used to work at the Bristol office. Does anyone have any experience of this surgeon/clinic, we are starting to wonder whether it would be better for us to have one eye done at a time. If we do have each eye done seperately, how soon can we have the other done and is it really worth us doing it this way. Please advise as we are already getting nervous and we have got three weeks to go yet!!  More...

Had Lasik at the Edinburgh clinic last week. I initially went to the Glasgow clinic but they do not offer the advanced Wafefront laser technology so I travelled to Edinburgh for the treatment. I found the Edinburgh lot less friendly than the Glasgow clinic, they seemed more keen to get me to hand over my deposit than to explain the procedure or side effects. There was no oppurtunity to see the consultant before the procedure, you only see him five minutes before you actually undergo the op. He didn't introduce himself and seemed pretty brusque. I week after the op I have excellent vision in my right eye, but my vision in my left eye is just above driving standard (6/9); disappointing ...  More...

I had lasek done on both eyes in manchester a week and a half ago with Dr Shay. The results are great. I am from Ireland and made the appt over the phone. They did give me some wrong information - told me i could travel home on the same day wheras the dr said i should stay at least 1 night. I was also unable to get the bandage contact lenses because they gave me wrong info on an optician here in Ireland (told me that she could take the lenses out but she could not). So i went without and it was very uncomfortable for the first two days. After all that i still think it was well worth it and anyone considering it should go for it......no more glasses.....yippee!!!!!!!  More...

Had my 2 week check up on Friday and everything is fine. I had bi-lateral Lasik treatment to correct -4.5 in both eyes. Even though Doctor Hynes wasn't scheduled to see me one of his patients was late so he did the checkup. My eyesight is better than 20/20 for both eyes. I'm still not out of the habit of reaching for glasses in the morning and heading to the bathroom to take my lenses out at night though.I'll post again after the final checkup in December.  More...

I'm booked in for a consultation on Thursday 23/10 at Southampton with Dr Ayoubi and (if all okay) LASEK (possibly bi-lateral) same day. My prescription is: Right: -2.25, 0.25, 125deg Left: -1.75, 0.25, 105deg I've read all there is to read on the internet, and considered it long and hard, finally coming to the decision that the time is right. I first enquired with Optimax in Bristol ten years ago, but was put off by the fact that it was a relatively new procedure. I'm right on the verge of not needing to wear glasses during the day, but sometimes find normal tasks difficult without them. Problem is I can't stand contact lenses and hate wearing glasses. I had LASIK treatment on the 3rd october 2003 at Birmingham. My prescription was -4.5 in both eyes. Dr Madhu was my surgeon and did my consultation too, although Michael did my aftercare. I did loads of research on the net and even found a video of the procedure, i wasnt nervous at all, quite excited really...... That was until i lay down in the operating room and just went to pot. But Bob the assistant was soooo nice to me and answered all my silly questions and told me i was really brave. The laser had to be started again once on my left eye because of me... but everything was ok. The actual treatment was painless but quite uncomfortable and i was absolutely petrified. For those asking opinions on Lasek. I had this treatment in Feb (left eye) and April (right eye) this year. Both eyes are now 20/10 which is amazing considering I had a starting prescription of about -5 in each eye with over -3 of astigmatism !! My left eye settled down quite quickly (<4 weeks) although I did experience the usual side effects for a few months. The right eye took much longer. In fact it was only at my checkup a few weeks back that it had finally caught my left eye up. So in all, while the result is excellent it has taken a good 6 months of healing to reach this stage. If anyone wants me to expand on the side effects and how they really affected me let me know. ...  More...

Hello, I live in Israel and AM NOT A PATIENT of OPTIMAX However, I couldn't find another board like this one and am very interested in hearing about other people's LASEK experiences. Very much enjoyed reading everyone's comments. I had LASEK done on both eyes. left eye about 3 weeks ago and right eye almost 2 weeks ago. Now I am very very worried. my left eye has cleared up rather nicely, after about 3-4 days post op. The right eye has not yet cleared and I have very blurry vision. what concerns me is that my surgeon insists that it could still clear up. I would really apprecaite hearing from anyone who has had similar experience. since my left eye cleared so quickly, it seems unl ...  More...

I have been to a consultation- it did feel quite rushed and busy, but i got all info needed. i've read most of the comments on optimax on this board (takes ages) and at the moment i think the risk is too big of loosing quality of sight especially at night. there are no in depth surveys/results that i can find about lasek at optimax. it simply says 98% or whatever (eventually) get 20/20 vision. there seems to be a lot of people with halos/ghosting/haze- whatever you want to call it- blurry vision, which happens at night. even if you don't read the comments- the star ratings are not good. i will personally not be rushed into this by thinking that this special offer will run out at the end of t ...  More...

I had Lasek about 6 weeks ago now. 20/20 in right eye, but still short sighted in left eye - though getting better. I was told I had largish pupils and may have trouble with halos and night vision. To tell the truth my eyesight when I'm driving seems no different than when I wore contact lenses. I'm just waiting to see if the steroid drops I've been given will help my left eye catch up to my right.  More...

Hi There ! I've just booked to have my eyes done by Dr Shah at the Manchester clinic. I'm slightly (ok, very !!) nervous about the fact that the decision/suggestion to go for Epiflap was given by the girl who took my enquiry over the phone on an approximate prescription given by me !! Has anyone had the epliflap procedure with Dr Shah? If so, I would really value your thoughts. Thanks !  More...

In reply to Miguel- I had bilateral LASEK last Friday. I'll post more details here when my vision has completely settled and I can give a fair rating. For now I would say having both eyes done is worth doing providing you don't have to see ANYTHING for the first day (they put a clear patch over one eye but in practice it's too painful to keep your eye open for longer than a millisecond). Also note that it is very painful for the first few hours- try to have the treatment done as late in the day as possible so you don't have long to wait before you can just pop the sleeping pills. Also, one thing that nobody pointed out is that you must take loads of tissues with you for the ride home. ...  More...

Considering LASEK on both eyes as feel it is the safer option but a little concerned as my prescription, particularly my left eye is perhaps higher than recommended. (L -5.25/R-3.50). Would like to hear about people with similar presciptions who have had LASEK.  More...

I just wanted to add my comments to this site. I had Lasek on both eyes at the same time at the Croydon site with Dr Hoe on the 30th Sept. Six weeks on and I am so so so so pleased with my eyes. On the day of the surgery I was ok and had spoken to Steve who is on this website at the Croydon office as he had a check that day. I was really positive about the out come as Dr Hoe was lovely during the consultation. It was me who messed up with my nerves going to pot when I had my first eye lasered. I kept moving and the laser stopped about five times. When I had the other eye done I was more relaxed and the laser only stopped once. It was all completely painless. Like everyone writes, yo ...  More...

Anyone any comments on Dr Patel in Finchley Road? Also, can anyone advise about having same-day treatment on both eyes. I suspect i'll need LASEK. Well I've been in for my checkup today and as expected I was 20/20 in both eyes. The only side effect I've had is a slight haze, but hopefully that will clear in the next couple of weeks. Unlike some other posts, I'm glad I waited until now to have the operation. I always got on well with contact lenses and I suspect the advances of technolgy and experience have been significant with the laser eye surgery over the past few years. This made me very comfortable with the entire procedure and the expected results. The only other point I'd like to mention is the choice between Lasik and PRK. I was suitable for either treatment, but opted for Lasik due to the faster recovery. People in a simila ...  More...

Well I had lasik treatment about 4 hours ago from Doctor Hynes at the Manchester clinic. My prescription was -4.5 in both eyes. The procedure itself was much as I expected. It was slightly uncomfortable but certainly not painful in any way shape or form. The smell of burning flesh isn't especially unpleasant and you get a fantastic light show. Once the anaesthetic drops wear off it's a bit painful for a couple of hours, but everything seems fine now and I CAN SEE CLEARLY !! I'll post again after the aftercare appointmnets, but I'm confident that I may even be 20/20 by tomrorrow. Another patient in Manchester today had travelled from Milton Keynes specifically to see Doctor Hynes and I ...  More...

Wilma, I had blurred vision in one eye for a couple of weeks and it settled down fine. I had my eyes done a month ago at Advance Visioncare and find they are still changing a little each day, though my sight is excellent. They say your vision can take up to three months to finally settle. But I'd ask your clinic and make an appointment if you're worried.  More...

Treated in Manchester by Lasek. Just had a check up after 4 weeks because my left eye was still short sighted (my right eye is 20/20). Good news - I can now read the 4th line on the chart with my left eye (only 2nd line 3 weeks ago). I've been put on steriod drops for 6 weeks which could improve my eyesight even more. I have to go back in 4 weeks so I'll just wait and see how everything goes. As it stands, I'm over the moon with my eyesight now and quite happy if things stay the same. It's amazing how many people I've met are now thinking about laser eye surgery because of my experience.  More...

Had bilateral epiflap on 13th September at the Southampton clinic. My prescription was -2.75 in right eye, -2.5 in left. I found the staff in Southampton very helpful. My operation was performed by Dr Ayoubi, who took great care to explain everything carefully beforehand, giving me the chance to decide whether to have one or both eyes done and even to back out altogether if I got cold feet. My topography appointment was officially 2 hours before my laser appointment, but as the clinic weren't busy on the day, they gave me the option of going straight in for the surgery which I chose to do. Dr Ayoubi was great - he explained exactly what was happening every step of the way, and was very calmi ...  More...

I had Lasek treatment, both eyes 14/02/03, 2.25/2.50 at Leeds by Dr.Samuals. During pre-op assessment risks mentioned included dry eyes, I already experienced slight dryness & expressed concern, was informed may have to use eye drops afterwards. Afterwards my eyes felt unbearably dry for 6 months, improving monthly rather than daily. I work parttime using P.C.in dry artificial lit atmosphere, had to wear sunglasses for weeks to ease discomfort(using 2 bottles of eyedrops preserve free a week). Diagnosed with blepharo-conjunctivitis at local hospital 13/07/03. Given 3 weeks antibiotics,1 week sterioddrops etc. Although problems subsided now still got pink lower lid margins, slight affected ...  More...

I have searched this site with interest and its great to see all of the feedback from all those who have had good and bad experiences. What i cannot find and have been trying to enquire about is weather someone with high blood pressure and also HIV positive ( but not on mediction) would be suitable for ANY type of corrective surgery. I get the impression that many HIV positive people would like the corrective surgery, but think they would be refused because of any aftercare problems. Any feedback would be appreciated.  More...

Laser surgery for HIV patients is probably not recommended. The grounds for this is not that treatment or follow up is not possible or prone to complication, but rather that occasionally HIV positive patients can develop other eye or retinal disorders (unrelated to laser surgery!). If significant haze or complication were to develop from having laser surgery, it would make monitoring or treatment of these other conditions difficult. This would also be the case for other diseases, such as diabetes etc. Hence, Laser surgery is generally not recommended for disorders such as this. I wouldn't have thought that high blood pressure alone would be a contrindication to laser surgery.Hope this helps. ...  More...

I had my bilateral Epiflap surgery on 13th Sep at the Optimax Finchley Rd clinic (-1.5 (L), -1.25 (R) plus astigmatism in both eyes). So far my experiences are very positive, exactly what I was expecting. It offers one of the cheapest options in the market so don't expect a red carpet treatment but in my case there were no delays, I was dealt with quickly and efficiently. If anything they are a little short on the information front so ensure you research everything properly beforehand and have your questions ready and I would advice to have visited at least one more clinic for a consultation (the expensive ones offer it free) as a comparison. Optimax is a perfect option for people who wa ...  More...

I had a consultation at edinburgh clinic last year. After the examination I was told that my cornea's were too thin for LASIK, but I was a canidate for LASEK. I had no problem with this, but a few weeks later received a phone call telling me that a second doctor had reviewed my results and decided I was a canidate for LASIK. Didnt quite feel me with confidence, so I decided to do some more research. I'm now at the point where I would like to look into surgery again, but the comments on this site are so mixed, that I have my doubts. Which Doctors have had the most negative reviews? Which clinic is the best? Quite frankly, my eyes are too valuable - unless I can get some positive info ...  More...

Had Lasek treatment at new Southampton clinic on 5th September. Both eyes were -3.00 and had slight astigmatism. Staff helpful and on all appointments i was seen on time. Treated by Alex Theodoris who was very reassuring and put me at ease by talking through each step of the procedure. Couldn't believe how quick it all was, about 35 seconds of laser in each eye. I moved my second eye slightly and the laser stopped and was started again but this was not a problem. one eye was fully bandaged (no bandage contacts were used) and the other had a plastic shield on for some visability. given sleeping tablets, pain killers, eye drops and sent home. I had made my following aftercare appointment b ...  More...

I had my initial consultation at the Manchester branch yesterday. As mentioned in several posts on here the administration wasn't great, but I think it's the quality of the advice/surgery that is most important. I couldn't help thinking that this would be a great place for a Dom Jolly skit - The waiting rooms have a number of adjoining rooms and I can imagine the reaction if screaming was heard from one of the rooms. I've got to say I was quite impressed with the surgeon I saw. My pupils are smaller than average and my corneal skin is thicker than average so I was approved for Lasik treatment. My prescription is -4.5 in both eyes and hasn't changed for several years. I've wore contact le ...  More...

I am considering the 2 for 1 option at Southampton. Are the company going bust as this is much less than half price of anywhere else? or is it done by trainee staff (remember the dodgy haircuts from my local hairdressing college, eeks). If anyone has experience of the Soton branch, please drop me a message to let me know how you got on. I am -6.25 right, -5.25 left and hate contact lenses that give me a lot of discomfort.  More...

Had Lasek at the Belfast Clinic on both eyes on 02.09.03. Everything I was told was true, ie no pain etc etc however it was quite wierd as you could obviously SEE what was going on. Bandage contact lenses were a bit of a nightmare as I had tried contact lenses about 8 years ago and they did not work for me. Had a consultation on 05.09.03 and bandages not ready to come off. Thankfully off on 09.09.03 and I feel fantastic. Quality of vision comes and goes but I am confident that it will settle in the 2-4 weeks. Staff were efficient and the coffee is good. Go on let Tracey sort you out!  More...

Just an update on my 10 day check up. I have 20/20 vision in my right eye, but it seems I was "under lasered" in my left eye so it is still short sighted (forgot to ask by how much). That said, my vision is line 6 (just over driving standard) which I'm quite happy with even if it stays that way. May actually be the reason why I'm not in any way longsighted which I was told to expect. My corneas have both healed very well. I have to go back in 3 weeks time to see if my left eye improves and I may need steroids (not sure what they do - must ask). I'll see what happens in 3 weeks.  More...

Im not in pain anymore just my eye tires easily and Im still sensitive to light I feel like a film star wearing sunglasses in the house, but my vision is still very hazy to be honest Im starting to get a bit worried now, but I know I have to be patient. I was supposed to start work today but my Doctor has given me a weeks sick note - I will be bored silly ha ha but seriously Im pleased I didnt get both eyes done same time. Maybe some people heal quicker than me, I STILL DONT HAVE ANY REGRETS just no patience!  More...

Following LASEK treatment at Manchester optimax on both eyes it is now 10 days later. As stated previously I had a lot of pain but feel wonderful now. I'd say it took a good 5 days to feel myself again. I have no haze, went back to work after 6 days, can watch TV and am driving again. I'm even attending my taekwondo lessons (making sure i take it easy). My eyesight seems to be improving every day and my eyes feel fine - although I do get tired easily when on the VDU or driving. I am due to have a check-up tomorrow to see how everything is. I hope everything is OK and I don't have to go back to Optimax for a few months. Here's to going swimming in a few weeks and actually being able to see ...  More...

I'm gearing up to have treatment. So far, I've read everything I could find on the various treatments, I've attended an open day at Birmingham Optimax and I've been to see my doctor and asked his advice. Tomorrow I'm attending a free consultation with Ultralase, though I have to say this is really going to be a benchmark for the consultation I'm going to book with Optimax in a couple of weeks when I return from holiday. I'm concerned on how they can charge so little compared to people like Ultralase, as I've always believed you get what you pay for. There is also the part of me that always wants the best deal though, so I'm still looking closest at Optimax, but I'm looking for the potential ...  More...

Had epiflap (LASEK) on both eyes on 26/8/03 at Manchester. Consultation, treatment & aftercare very good. The consultant explained everything to me beforehand and told me I was suitable and that I could go ahead with treatment straight away. I opted to have both eyes done at the same time. I had read up about the treatment and so was aware of what the consultant was doing and he also talked me through it. The treatment was very quick and painless and I was not given bandage lenses. This may be why I suffered terrible pain for 2 days - although my eyes did not water and I felt no grittiness etc. On the 3rd day I awoke and looked over to the alarm clock - I could see the figures as plain as a ...  More...

After much deliberating over the epiflap surgery, i was finally convinced to go for it after the birth of my son. At 4 months the floor was wearing my glasses more than me! My consultation was on July 25th 2003 and i went staright in for the surgery afterwards as did my mother. I can honestley say i felt no pain or discomfort during the procedure, afterwards both my eyes and my mothers were weepy and quite light sensitive. I took 2 painkillers and went to bed. Our consultant recommended the contact lense bandages - these made our eyes feel quite gritty, but upon removal everything was very clear and the dry eye feeling soon disappeared. All in all its the best thing we've ever done, ...  More...

Both eyes -2.50 I went to the Leeds branch on the 21st of July for bi-lateral lasek its the best thing I have ever done, Dr Samuel is fantastic he went through everything very slowly and explained all the risks and recovery period making sure I had understood. I have been waiting to post anything on the web site until I had my monthly check up. Just had it on the 26th of Auguts 20/20 vision. I had the contact lenses put in so help ease the pain because I am a wimp you dont have to have these it does mean going back 3 days after surgery but hey anything to lessen what ever the pain might be, the day I had it done I followed the instructions and took the pain killers 1/2 hour after having ...  More...

Hello I went to the London branch. My right eye is still fine touch wood but my left eye as I said before can hardly see text or anything up close. My eyes were fine for 3 months and it just started to get worse. My prescription was -7.5 and -7. I will see if I can get an appoinment this week to see what they say. Its quite scarey, the thought of wearing glasses and contacts again fill me with dread ! The headaches are starting to take their toll on me as well.  More...

Hello Bad news I had both my eyes done back in July and they have been gradually getting worse. They were fine for the first month but then got worse its gotten to the point now where I can not see with my left eye at close range any more. The sad fact is Im not sure they will be able to do anythign about it as I started off on a high prescription. I will unfortunately have to go back to glasses or contacts. Maybe this is rare but be careful  More...

Left eye - Sph -2.50 Right eye - Sph -2.50 Had LASEK (EPIFLAP) treatment done to both eyes at Croydon last Wednesday (20th Aug) by Dr Ho. As expected I was nervous but Dr Ho made me feel very reassured. The actual operation was over in no time at all and was completely painless. As soon as the first drops go in, everything goes blurred. I couldn't feel the Epithelium being removed just saw it, but Dr Ho was very good in explaining what was happening. Don't worry if you move your eye, I did, and the laser stopped as promised! The Epithelium was replaced and a bandage lense put in place and that was it. I agree with Michelle about afterwards with the nurse. She told me a few times wha ...  More...

Original Eyes: Left -1.75 Right -2.5 8mm pupils I had LASEK performed by Dr. Anwar at the Glasgow branch. My overall impression of Optimax and Dr. Anwar was that they are very capable and professional. However i did get the feeling of a `conveyor belt`. Of course, since Optimax are probably the cheapest surgery, i`m not suprised things were slightly `too efficient`. As for the surgery itself, it was a bit nerve-wracking, and certainly more serious than a trip to the dentists (i`ve seen some people equate the two). About 20 mins after leaving the surgery the pain started to kick in...proper pain - teeth clenching stuff! It lasted all evening, until the sleeping pills knocked me ...  More...

So far so good, had my Bi-Lateral (both eyes at the same time) Epiflap proceedure 5 days ago. I had a few essential last minuet questions and I'm sure the nurse thought I was jabbering on because I was nervous...which I was. I had my treatment postponed on Sat 16th due to staff sickness so since the assessment on that day I had thought of a couple more things to ask. Dr Ho (Croydon) gave a lovely smile to greet me and I felt a tad more relaxed. The surgery - if you can call it that, went very quickly. I tried to relax and just let it happen and I knew that I should expect blurred vision as soon as the drops were put in. Dr Ho was very calming. I could feel the Epithelium being removed bu ...  More...

Had PRK epiflap with Dr Mathen at the Manchester Clinic on Sat 26th Agust. Tretament went very well, it is a little disturbing being so aware of things but you just need to relax. The discomfort kicked in about 15mins after treatment just about enough time to get to the car. I couldnt open my eyes for 48 hours but three days on pain has gone and I am starting to see the improvements already. I will write more after my 10day check up  More...

I had my eyes treated two weeks ago in Aberdeen and its fantastic!!!! I can now see without my glasses or contacts and I wish I'd done it earlier. My vision is now 6/5 in both eyes and I'm THRILLED!!! The staff at the clinic were very helpful and friendly - especially when I was nervous just having my consultation!!!!! And on the day the girls were fantastic -- I nearly chickened out and they calmed me down fantastically. I'm now on a mission to tell everyone about my success - just need to pursuade my hubby to get it done now!!  More...

I had LASEK on !2th April 2003 at Finchley Rd clinic. A "saturday guy" performed my painless treatment and I could see the results immediatly! To be succinct my right eye healed perfectly within 2 days...my left one took more like 2 months. I truly panicked at the blur, haze, double vision, and lack of ability to read even the top line of the chart, without my dominant right eye to help out. I had a topography at 10 days post op at which the optician said "your cornea is badly distorted" and ran for the doctor! I'd developed hyperplasia (extra scar tissue) and was assured it would heal in about 6 weeks. IT DID! 4 months post op I have BETTER than 20/20 vision, with only a little starbursting ...  More...

I had PRK LASEK surgery performed by Dr Islam at Finchley Road clinic in early May 2003. I went for my three month aftercare appointment yesterday and was told that I had developed significant corneal haze. I have an appointment this Saturday with Dr Islam to discuss my options. Having researched on the web I've found a lot of material suggesting that corneal haze is not uncommon and usually clears up after 6-12 months, so I'm hopeful of a good outcome in the long term. The main effect of the haze seems to be that I still have quite pronounced ghosting 3 months after surgery. It's not a major problem but it does cause some difficulty when driving at night. I'll add another update after my d ...  More...

Had Lasik in November 2002, Finchley Road with Dr Patel- and haven't looked back since! Best thing I ever did. Was approx -8.5 in both eyes and am 0 in left eye and about -0.5 in right eye which is better than I had of hoped for. The only downside is the waiting- you'll never get seen on time (apart from my actual op which was early!!!) for aftercare appts, and a couple of the opticians were a bit moody and not very helpful. Dr Patel was very informative- I had a long list of questions when I first saw him, and a few more on the day of the op- he answered all of them truthfully without using too much medical jargon either. Still paying my dad back (slowly)- but definately well worth it.  More...

I had both my eyes done at Optimax, Finchley road, a month ago, Dr Patel. I was very nervous and came out of the theatre in mild shock I think, white as a sheet and shaking, but I can honestly say I felt no pain, I could see what was going on, hear Dr Patel talking and feel pressure of course, but no pain. One month one, slight infection in left eye, now cleared up and vision very good, 20/20 in right eye, was -5 and in left, not as good, was -6 but very good nonetheless. Think hard before you part with your cash but I'd recommend it.  More...

I had bi-lateral Lasek in February at Finchley Road, London to correct short sight and astigmatism. It took a few weeks for my eyes to settle down to good vision where i could read small print, especially on computers. I was worried that i couldn't do my work, but for others in this postion do not worry, it does get better and you just need to be patient. Your eyes could fluctuate day-by-day also, but again, don't worry. I now have vision as good as I had when I wore glasses, if not better. If you are thinking about getting the surgery - make sure you do have plenty of time off work after the surgery to allow your eyes time improve.  More...

Hi all, I've just started looking into having LASIK / LASEK corrective eye treatement. I currently wear 30 day (DAY&NIGHT) contact lenses at a strength of -3.75. I'm really keen to set rid of the lenses as my future job path necessitates it. I've started to research all the info on the web and there seems to be a lot. However, I get the general impression that LASIK is probably the way to go based on the degree of my eye defect. I also like the look of Optimax's prices and there located in Newcastle . Just wanted anyones comments or experiences with the Newcastle branch. Thanks in advance, Mike  More...

In response mainly to Tony Winter's review and Carol White - I was similar to Tony and had Lasik at Leeds in March. The surgeon was good - and that's the most important thing. My right eye wasn't so good after, and they said it might improve. I didn't think it would, but it seems okay now, so you do have to give it time. If my eyes stay like this, I'll be very happy - though they do get tired after close work. I go for further aftercare app on Wed.  More...

My husband and I have both had our eyes lasered and our experiences are similar. We are both 51 and were told we would need reading glasses. Although it is only 2 weeks since the surgery - neither of us can work properly - he is in engineering and needs to see small print and I work in an office. We cannot get prescription glasses for a period of 3 months. Our surgeon is not at the clinic any longer and the aftercare is not done by the surgeon. We feel if we saw him he could give us more helpful information i.e. has something gone wrong or is this normal? He was on loan from an office in Croydon (We live in Newcastle). The clinic merely say - it will get better. We asked about our mi ...  More...

Toni I have now booked my consultation and surgery appointments for Birmingham in the middle of September. Now that this is done I'm starting to worry about all sorts of things, in particular, the rubbing of the eyes. I understand that you can't rub them for upto 3 weeks after LASIK, and I have already noticing how much I rub them now, which I never noticed before. What would happen if such an incident occurred after the surgery. I have also read that a knock on the head is a bit of a worry, obviously I don't plan on hitting my head, but if anything did happen is this a problem for life or just until the eyes have settled. One last thing the whole family is going to America middle of O ...  More...

Has anyone had surgery with Dr S Doyle in Manchester? I would be interested to learn about your experience. I have been booked in for a consultation in August 2003 My prescription is -7.5 in both eyes but have been told by another clinic that I would be suitable for LASEK (Epiflap) and not LASIK due to thin corneas. I have spoken to Optimax and they have said that Dr Doyle does LASEK for high prescriptions but I would only be interested if I can get rid of my glasses completely!  More...

I have booked into Optimax for Lasek treatment at the end of this month. I am now concerned after visitng this web site that their rating is much lower than many of the other clinics. Do people who have had treatment with optimax think this is due to the quality of service (i.e. friendliness of staff or after care treatment) or the treatmeent itself is not as successful. I ask this as many of the negative comments are related to service rather than the treatment..  More...

I am surprised that anybody is prepared to let someone interfere with their eyes on the basis of anecdote. Spend at least a working week (40 hours) doing structured searches of academic journals. LASEK can only be used up to 4D? In fact there is little or no difference between LASIK and PRK/LASEK at almost all levels or treatment. What you are looking for in science is a prospective and randomized trial - so taking a couple of hundred eyes with an average of -9.5 dioptres (i.e. people for whom LASIK should be the only option), and a range of -6 to -15, they gave half LASIK and half PRK. The result at thirty days? The LASIK group had slightly better best corrected visual acuity (i.e. with ...  More...

Hi Craig, Thanks for putting it to me in that way. I've been thinking about it since my last post and have decided to stick with Epiflap for a number of reasons: 1. I only have one pair of eyes so if I can reduce the 'risk' in by sitting through a slower recovery, i'm prepared to do so. 2. Visited the optimax website and Epiflap is recommended for people with my eyesight (under -3.50) I'll let you all know how it goes. Many thanks, Danny.  More...

Hi again, I've finally booked myself in for Epiflap with Dr Islam at Finchley Road. I havent read any comments on her so if anyone does have experience with her, could you please contact me. I am constantly changing my mind between Epiflap and Lasik and am still considering changing for two reasons: 1. I have read only good reviews for Mr Patel @ Finchley Road 2. Recovery time is faster and less painfull. Any more advice/reassurance would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks, Danny.  More...

Hi, I'm gonna have 'treatment' in Optimax Finchley Road but cant decide which one to go for, Epiflap or Lasik? My eyes are suitable for either but i'm trying to weigh out the options. I've heard that with Epiflap you cant drive for 7-10 days after treatment, is this true? The higher risk of Lasik obviously is deterring me but i'm attracted to the faster recovery. Please reply with your comments or feel free to e-mail me. Thanks.  More...

With the epiflap procedure we don't advise you to drive until you've had your first aftercare, which is normally between 5 and 10 days after treatment. This is due to your eyes being quite unstable for that time. Epiflap does have a longer recovery time, but is a lot safer than Lasik. You're best off speaking with the doctor, who will be able to outline all the risks involved, and help you make a decision based on your eyes. Everyone is different. Any questions, email me!!  More...

Had my first check up 2 weeks after appointment. One eye is 20/20, the other is 20/35 - about +1 .00 - maybe overcorrection but might settle in time - to be honest I don;t really notice it now although the first week it was quite uncomfortable. I think people need to be aware of psychological issue they may have afterwards. Although I had a good result I was quite depressed during the 2nd week in case I had made the wrong decision. I have slight ghosting on one eye, and halos at night - I was warned about the haloes - but it does depress you at first. At the moment I'm happy to be driving along in my new designer wrap around sunspecs and able to enjoy going out without glasses ruining m ...  More...

Optimax don't offer aftercare appointments with doctors unless there is some sort of problem. The reason being that you have to pay for the doctors time. It is normal practice that an optometrist will see you for all of your aftercare appointments, unless of course it is an emergency!  More...

I had LASIK surgery at the Edinburgh clinic on the 17th May. The operation went fine but on the first night I was in a bit of discomfort and didn't sleep much. Just had the first month check up and can see the bottom line on the chart with both eyes so happy with that ! I use artificial tear drops a couple of times a day and there's a slight halo around lights at night. Apart from that everything is fine. The clinic staff were friendly and helpful.  More...

Had my lasik surgery done on Saturday 21 June 2003 at Edinburgh with Mr Saboor. I was very nervous but now that it is all over I wonder why it took me so long to have it done. I had no discomfort did not need painkillers and was able to drive on Sunday afternoon. My near vision is not so focused and I have small halos at night but it is early days and hopefully that will improve. Will post my 1 week check results. My first "proper" aftercare appointment - 4 weeks after having had my cornea re-lifted and smoothed back again (because of a crease). Eyesight almost 20/20 - could read 4 out of 5 letters on the bottom row, not easily, but focusing quite a bit. Having had trouble with the cornea creasing, and then blurred vision in that eye, on and off for 3 weeks after my op, i was getting quite anxious over my eyesight, and frustrated that things where not going as planned - hence my last rating for Optimax was not a good one. The blurring in my right eye now seems to have cleared (probably just needed to "catch - up" with the left one) and i am very happy with my eyesight and SO glad that i had th ...  More...

Well what can I say? Had my aftercare appointment 6weeks on from the actual treatment and I am sad to say I only have 10/20 vision in both eyes. I thought they were improving but I guess I have just got used to not have perfect vision. I am really disappointed at the surgery. I can only get half way down the chart and am borderline on whether I can drive or not, dusk may be a problem. The doctor who saw me gave me a thorough eye test and said I had to go back in 2 months time. He said that I could still improve but since my check up the day after the surgery I don't think I have improved at all so what chance do I have at improving 3 months on? I would be really happy to hear from an ...  More...

I had bi-laterl Epiflap PRK on Sat 7th June, 6pm by Dr Anwar @ the Glasgow clinic on my large pupils (7mm). I found the op itself painless but terrifying when everything goes blurry - I was convinced I wasn;t looking at the light !!! Dr Anwar was very reassuring. He has been an eye doctor for over 30 years, and has done over 4000 PRK's. I spent the rest of Saturday and Sunday in bed, no pain during the op or after but had great difficulty in opening my eyes. The uncomfortable feeling was comparable to having an eyelash in your eye and not being able to flush it away. Last night I started seeing the TV really clear = on and off. A little halo around my tv standby button in dark, b ...  More...

I go to the Glasgow clinic (Dr Anwar) tomorrow afternoon for lasek, my eyes are -3.25 and -3.74, no astigmatism. "Last night I played squash for the 1st time since the op, I WON!!, my vision whilst not perfect was fine, and I dont know why but my vision seemed much sharper afterwards" You probably have lots of little irregularities on your cornea, and the buckets of oily sweat running into your eyes filled in the irregularities. Your eyes might be a bit dry, which is definitely a problem. Dr Sylvia Norton reckons that a moist cornea helps recovery.  More...

BEING A STAFF NURSE WITH AN OPTHALMIC NURSE FOR A MOTHER YOU CAN IMAGINE I SPENT MANY MANY HOURS TRYING TO DECIDE WHICH CLINIC/TYPE OF SURGERY ECETERA TO USE. I WENT FOR AN APPONTMENT AT ULTRALASE IN CHESTER AND WAS IMPRESSED SEEN QUICKLY CLEAR EXPLANATIONS GIVEN. THE OPTOMETRIST WAS GREAT,SHE SAID HOWEVER THAT BECAUSE OF MY HIGH MYOPIA -5.75/-6.00 MY CORNEA WAS NOT THICK ENOUGH FOR LASIK TREATMENT BUT I COULD BE ELIGIBLE FOR LASEK. THIS WAS PERFORMED ONLY IN ULTRALASE'S MANCHESTER CLINIC ON A MONTHLY BASIS. SO OFF I WENT TO OPTIMAX IN LIVERPOOL AS I KNEW SOMEONE WHO HAD HAD LASEK THERE AND RECOVERED VERY WELL  More...

Update: Finchley Road Clinic I went for my one week check up yesterday, the optomerist was quite thorough in her check up, but the sight test was pointless as things are still too blurry, although I can read the letters down to driviving test standard, its just that they are not crisp and sharp. She also said that this was a sure sign that my eyes have not healed yet. In fact last night my right eye once again went very out of focus, I do feel a little depressed over it, not because of having it done, because I am so pleased I did, but because of the lack of reasurance from the staff that all would be fine, I mean surely they have enough historical data to commit themselves a bit more than ...  More...

I was given Lasek (Epiflap) treatment by Dr. Almasri at the Finchley Road, London clinic on 22nd May 2003, and must say that I am really pleased with the the results. I found the staff at the clinic were very helpful, efficient and proffessional. Having spent many hours surfing the net for information I felt I was prepared for all eventualities. The treatent itself was painless and the aftercare instructions easy to follow. My eyesight was around -3.00 in each eye and I now seem to have perfect vision with none of the possible problems that you hear about.  More...

I had Lasik at Bristol Optimax on 12th May with Dr Martiz. I agree with the comments made by Mandy - he is very uncommunicative, and quite honestly I was terrified. I was in a state of shock at the end , and sobbed in the waiting room afterwards. He did reassure me that all had gone well at the post op check half an hour or so later, but I think he needs to speak louder and more often to calm patients down. I wasnt sure if I was doing what he wanted as I could hardly hear him. I was initially pleased with the result once I had calmed down, but I have had a severe deterioration in my left eye over the last few days. It is not to driving standard at the moment, and I am worried in case ...  More...

Optimax - Bristol Branch - treatment 10th April It is just over a month now since I had LASIK at the Bristol clinic with Dr Martiz.> The Dr himself was very quiet and didn't volunteer any information to me unless I asked about things which I thought was a bit unhelpful. The day of treatment itself was fine, I had an hours wait went in for 15 minutes, had both eyes done, waited for another 30minutes, had a check up and was out of the clinic. I have had a problems since due to not healing as quickly as most people. I had severe bruising and swelling in the eyes which caused me to have astigmatism. My sight is only now begining to improve and I have another aftercare in two weeks time wit ...  More...

Update 72hrs post op Woke up this morning, eyes very crusty, so I just laid in bed and administered the drops. However the site in my right eye is very out of focus today, and even as I write this I am not able to look at the screen for more than a few seconds at a time as my eyes go all glary. I tried to ring Finchley branch but it just kept ringing and ringing, so in the end I sent a fax, that was three hours ago and no return call. I have heard that stronger drops can help, does anyone know if this is right  More...

Lasik - My story - i arrived at 9.30am Monday for 10am surgery, however Mr Pael was slightly late so I was finally seen at 10.20am. The process was that I was taken into the reception area of the theatre, where I had a fancy pair of over booties and a rather dashing plastic hat put on. Fromthere I was led into the theatre where Mr Patel greeted me, and asked me to lay down on the bed, he roughly explained the process and then proceded to clean my eyes. Following this he put numerous drops into both eyes so as to numb them. He covered my right eye first and put the instrument on the left eye to cut the flap. he had told me previously that I would need the laser applied for 61 secs for the lef ...  More...

My first post for Optimax, I now see, was a hasty decision. The reason for Optimax going down to 2 stars are as follows: I remember after the initial surgery, mentioning that it felt as though my bandage contact was falling out, but I was told all was fine. The day after I was told 20/20 vision. Great, I was ecstatic. Day after that, in the evenings, one eye seemed “fuzzy”. At first I put this down to ghosting etc. It was only 3 days later when I awoke with the “fuzziness” that I began to worry. I phoned the clinic, they were reassuring – however Dr. Madhu wasn’t in to speak to me, he was operating in Birmingham. So I phoned the contact no. on my aftercare sheet. Dr. Madhu said I could g ...  More...

Hi all, this is my experience with Optimax (LONG!) : I "was" shortsighted. Approx -5 in each eye with about -3.25 astigmatism which is very high. I first contacted Optimax about 7 yrs ago but was advised at the consultation not to proceed as the laser technology at the time wasn't ideally suitable for treating my level of astigmatism. So, I contacted Optimax again in February this year (2003). At the consultation I was informed that things had changed considerably and that achieving 20/20 vision after treatment was now in the 90-95% range rather than 60% before (1996). So I booked up for the treatment on 24th Feb. Because my cornea is on the thin side I was advised that Lasek (Epi ...  More...

I have just been signed off today from Optimax, Finchley Road, my surgeon was Dr Patel. I had Lasik on both eye's on the 16th January 2003, It's clear to all that are about to take a decision to have a flap cut from their eye and then under go a laser to burn your eye into the correct shape that this is scary stuff. My eye's before the op were R -3.25 and L -2.75. The whole experience was very good, First the op was completly painless and very quick, by the same evening I was watching TV un-aided, at first I had some difficulty reading however this improved over a week. I was most concerned about night driving, spikes from car lights appeared quite bad, but yet again this has improved to ...  More...

After much deliberation I have chosen to go ahead with LASEK at the Manchester clinic and I'm booked in for my consultation on 23rd May and surgery on 11th June. My husband had PRK over 3 years ago and although he suffered for 3 or 4 days afterwards, he has 20/20 vision now and has never regretted it. I was orginally booked in for LASIK, but after reading comments on this site and further research, I've decided it carries a much greater risk and this flap business worries me. I would much rather suffer for a few days than take a risk. My concern is the light sensitivity afterwards. I am off on holiday to Italy on the 4th July - just 3 weeks after surgery and I'm worried that my holiday ...  More...

I have not gone ahead as yet with Laser eye surgery but have visited the Optimax clinic twice in Manchester and found that they treated me very professionally and spent over 90 minutes with me discussing why I should not consider eye surgery at the time of my visit. I would also like to say that this site is very good and that that anyone considering laser surgery on the eye should visit first. Would it be possible to provide more detailed information in the future on success rates of clinics and the specific problems arising from surgery? I was unaware that surgery could be performed by anyone with a medical qualification. I do not think this should be permitted as the eye ...  More...

I had an appointment for Saturday 3rd May 2003 in the Finchley branch. I had an emergency on that day and could not make my appointment. I called the call center in order to reschedule and was told I had to pay another £30 booking fee as they require 5 days notice for any rescheduling. I am extremely disappointed as (a) I was never told this in any of the correspondence from Optimax, (b) If notice period required, most places want 24 hours notice, (c) I wasn't canceling completely and wanted to reschedule. This has left a very bad taste as I have been to other eye clinics and had much better customer service. The basic message I got was that they are only interested on the money side and ...  More...

Having researched laser treatment – good and bad, I decided over the bank holiday to phone up, and “bite the bullet”. I was able to go in on that day – Tues. Having read and signed the “Do you understand…?” declaration, and giving an inner sob (fright), I was ready. I waited an hour, as others were being “done” and I declined the sedation – only cos I had taken my own. I would advise to take the offer of sedation (valium). DAY 1: Sat in waiting room, quite chilled, focusing on my breathing – I’m a wimp regarding the unknown. Lying in the reclining chair, my nerves kicked in and even before anything was done I started to cry!!! (told you – wimp!) A pad was placed over my left eye, and d ...  More...

Bindy - some surgeons think that UV exposure causes haze in refractive surgery patients. One of the surgeons on the asklasikdocs bulletin board saw haze develop in a patient after a weekend fishing off a boat - lots of glare. A Scandinavian doctor noticed no haze at all during the dull winter months, but a stark increase as soon as summer came around. To cut to the chase, you might want to wear good wrap-around shades in Australia.  More...

Had Lasek procedure done on both eyes on 11th April at Bristol Clinic. I was very light sensitive for first few days and its did hurt. Its was boring being stuck in my room all day in the dark but a few days later.............. Fantastic! no glasses no fiddling with lenses and worrying about keeping them in too long. it was money well spent - my 2 week check showed right eye perfect, left eye .75, but this will still correct itself. I don't notice its at all! back again in another 3 weeks. Had Lasek treatment done on both eyes at Optimax Clinic, Manchester on 15th April, by Dr Mathen. Was really impressed with thorough tests on my eyes before having surgery. The treatment is completely pain-free and I was kept informed of what was going on all the way through the procedure. After an hour after treatment I felt some discomfort in both eyes which I would describe as being like having soap in your eyes! I went straight to bed after taking pain-killers and sleeping pills and felt much better the following day. A couple of days after treatment I was able to open my eyes fully and could see quite clearly. It has now been almost a week since my treatment and I've been out and about w ...  More...

Hello All I had bilateral LASIK treatment at Finchley Road on Monday (14th April). I am fairly impressed with the results but I do have blurred vision, ghosting, problems with light at night and the right eye definitely seems stronger. Overall, I'm pretty impressed, at best my vision is about as good with glasses and in five days I'm really pleased not to have to be relying on them! Going back for the check up next week - what does this involve - any comments anyone? Also, the visual problems I am experiencing are these fairly typical and am I worrying too much!? I was happy with the doctor but the admin, appointment and organisation left a lot to be desired - felt a bit like a ...  More...

Now after a further 5 weeks I'm 0.75 in my right and -1.25 in my left with an astigmatism of 1.00 in each eye?????? Help please!!!!!! I'm booked for a re-treatment on 2nd May after another consultation on 1st May to see if I'm suitable!!!!! Has anybody else had a re-treatment if so how did it go? I would be very grateful for any response.. Thanks  More...

I has lasik surgery on 29th March 02 at the Edinburgh clinic with Dr Pillai performing the surgery. Pre op checks went fine and the clinic was running smoothly - albeit a little late. As I have small eyes, there was some discomfort in applying the eye clamps and a definite pressure when the incision was made. I'm told that if my eyes had been bigger there would have been no problems, but it was over relatively quickly. The surgery itself was very quick, the smell wasn't as bad as I had imagined - rather like singed hair! I was able to see blurrily right after the surgery - and was shocked by how much difference loosing the astigmatism caused! My original prescription was -5.75 in both e ...  More...

Decision! I have decided to go for Lasek! I have booked a consultation and if all is ok I shall have the surgery same day (Sat 12 April). My initial thought were leaning towards Lasik but after receiving emails from several others and also looking into the risks and procedures I have decided that with my prescription Lasek is best for me. I shall let you know how I get on (fingers crossed!) And just to add, thanks for all who took the time to write to me, feedback from REAL people makes all the difference!  More...

Bindy, You need to do a lot more research. The results are thirty days are the same for both procedures, and there are some horrendous complications possible for LASIK. You also have the long-term worries about ectasia and having the flap pulled of your eye in a trauma.  More...

Bindy I was advised to have LASEK as opposed to LASIK, I found the whole process relatively pain free, yes I had weepy eyes the first few days and strong light wasn't nice the first few days but after having it done on the Monday and the Saturday I was out and about and feeling fine. I know that everyone's recovery time will be different but I would advise you to research both methods. If you need any more information please contact me  More...

I had lasek (epiflap) in both eyes at the Optimax Glasgow Clinic on 8th March 03 very painless only 47 seconds each eye, when I got outside to go back to the car my eyes and nose were streaming as if I had just caught a cold, took the 2 sleeping tablets on the saturday night and 2 painkillers and slept great, was fine on the sunday just kept taking the painkillers, on the sunday afternoon I took the patches off my eyes and put the ointment on could still not open my eyes, but by the monday morning I could open them up a little, but I did not need any painkillers on the monday, on the tuesday I could open them fully but the lids were a little swollen, wednesday the swelling went down and I ...  More...

It is now 4 weeks since I had my surgery at the clinic in Manchester, and I must say my vision is fantastic. Although the results were not immediate for myself and I did suffer a reaction to the drops, it was definately worth it. I would recommend this treatment to anyone who is fed up of wearing glasses, but be patient your vision improves every day. The staff at Manchester have been very helpful and have been on hand to help with any questions that I have had since the surgery. Definately money well spent.  More...

It is 3 weeks today (25th Feb) since I had Lasik both eyes at Finchley Road. Initially, my right eye was not as clear as my left but over the past few days I have noticed that my vision in the right eye is now much clearer and both eyes now seem very similar. I am trying to avoid wearing the reading glasses but as I work on a pc the majority of the day I do have to succumb at times. Lighting makes a lot of difference and also what paper print is on so I don't worry about it anymore. I haven't returned to my pilates classes as yet, as I find that bending and quick movement of my head makes my eyes blur and get weird specks in my eyes so following doctor's orders and leaving it for another ...  More...

I had LASEK treatment last Monday at the clinic in Birmingham, everything went well and after only one week my eyesight has improved dramatically, my right eye is weaker than the left but as the Optician told me not to rush things and give it a month I am not worried. The only advice I would give to any one having surgery is to write down all the questions that they want to ask and raise these at the consultation (my consultation lasted over an hour). I felt I knew all the plus's and minus's when I left. After the treatment just take it easy for as long as possible, I spent the second day in bed listening to the radio, resting my eyes. What's the lowest prescription can you have to have re-treatment? Does it hold more risk? If anyone has had re-treatment for Lasek, please e-mail me & let me know if all went well/or not with you. thanks  More...

I just had lasik on my left eye with Dr Patel at the London branch on Thursday. Left eye -4.50 and right eye -4.25. The surgery went well and Dr Patel was very good in calming me down and encourageing me. Having one eye done was a personal decision (I was worried that something will go wrong and somehow easier to care for 1 eye, didn't regret decision). Also whenever I needed to rub my eye I had 1 other eye to do so. My prescription is +0.75 the day after the surgery. Not sure how did would change. My right eye will be done 2 weeks later. At the moment, my eye is recovering fine, no major problems or halos..etc. I wear contact lense in the other eye and the overall vision is better than pe ...  More...

Had my 1 week check at Leeds yesterday. Didn't seem a lot to it. They say both my eyes are a bit long-sighted, but it will settle down, plus I need weak over-counter reading glasses for now. My right eye hasn't such good focus. Left seems very good. Been told not to use gym for another 3 weeks, which seems a bit excessive. I go back in 4 weeks. If anyone has any advice/tips for this stage, let me know. All gratefully received.  More...

I had Lasik treatment done on my right eye on March 5th at Golden Square, Aberdeen, by Dr Kalognomas, due to my having only mild refraction, in the hope of having monovision. He initially went to treat my left eye which was the slighter weaker one but stopped when discovering what he at first thought was a scratch. He explained later that it was too dry (I do use eye drops due to a thyroid problem and had explained all this at my pre-op check). He then suggested that he do the cheaper option but I declined so he then suggested looking to see if the right eye could be done, which I agreed to. Something obviously went wrong from what he said afterwards and I have been left with a haze over ...  More...

Just an update on my progress. I had LASIK surgery on Saturday 8th March, which I was very nervous about. I am happy to report that everything went well, there was absolutely no pain during the surgery and I only had a little discomfort for a couple of hours afterwards. What a difference from the PRK, I was in alot of pain for days. 3 days since the surgery and I notice a huge difference already. My distance vision is excellent but my near vision is still a bit hazy, I was told this was quite normal though. This is very strange for me because I was been short sighted for most of my life. I am back at work today and I am finding it a bit difficult to focus on the computer and read anyt ...  More...

I had LASIK on 27th Feb performed by Dr Patel in Finchley Road. I have had my one week post op chek up and been told that that day after my surgery, I had 0 in both eyes and that one week later my prescription was +0.25/+0.5 but that this would change again and take time to settle to a final prescription. I have been told that it takes at least a month for it to settle and someone else I know has been told that it can take up to six months. The operation itself is nothing to worry about, you can't feel a thing, but the week following it has been very stressful. My eyes (around the rim and under the lids) have been sore, but this comes and goes as does dryness. I also have some hazing, which ...  More...

I had Lasik done at the Edinburgh clinic on 25/1/03 and had my 1 month check up on 7/3/03. Whilst I can read the bottom line of the eye chart which would suggest a complete success, my eyes have been and still are very sensitive to artificial light and daylight and 1 month on, no sign of improvement. I decided to get the op done as I play a lot of competitive golf and the thought of being able to play without glasses was a big attraction. However, I almost feel like I still require glasses to play as the sharp focus I had with my glasses is not there. Similarly, working with my PC at work under the lights is the same and I find my eyes go out of focus very easily. Overall, I would have to sa ...  More...

Had both eyes Lasik last Thurs, by Dr Bozaart, Leeds. He's good. op more frigtening than I'd expected - maybe I'm soft, but over quick. long-sight is so clear. Short-sight blurs a bit, but manageable so far. No light sensitivity - in fact was more problem before op. Have driven okay. So far, so good, so just fingers crossed no complics emerge. Long wait before op, but then dealt with well, plus aftercare appointment prompt and good. I go back next Thurs.  More...

Underwent bi-lateral Lasek treatment at Manchester on March 1st, procedure performed by Dr. Ilango. All went well on the day, was not fully prepared for the strong smell of burnt tissue when the laser fired, not pleasant but a necessary by-product of the process I guess. Left immediately post-op with clear plastic shields fitted on both eyes. Could see to an extent, was even reading number plates on way back to car but shortly after getting to car the anaesthetic drops effects were diminishing and I was forced to close my eyes to stop discomfort associated with light sensitivity. Took painkillers as provided but still suffered some discomfort during the remainder of day 1. Slept well w ...  More...

I finally had lasik treatment on monday at finchley road, with Dr Almasri. Dr Almasri was very nice and kept me calm during it all, as i was very nervous. My vision now is amazing, better than with my glasses. Things still look a bit odd indoors with lots of artificial lights but as its not even been a week yet i'm not worried. I did find my aftercare appointment very quick but as I didn't have any questions and there were no problems there wasn't really much more they could do. So it was straight in and out. I had laser surgery done in June 2001 (PRK) at the Glasgow clinic. My left eye has been a total success and my vision is perfect. However, the vision in my right eye is still quite blurry (better than it was before though). I had to wait a year before they would even think about enhancement surgery. I then had to go back for regular checkups until my prescription stabilised. Eventually, last month I was given the all clear to the enhancement surgery which I am getting done this Saturday (8th March) at the Edinburgh Clinic. This time I am having the LASIK surgery, which I am really nervous about. It is the thought of them actually cutting my eye! Fingers crossed all goes well and I re ...  More...

Went back for my 3 month post op check up last Saturday (after having LASIK with Dr Patel, Finchley Rd) and they were happy to 'discharge' me as everything is perfect with my eyes. My right eye is 20/20 and my left is very slightly short sighted- this will help when I'm older and need reading glasses, BUT I think my vision is FANTASTIC, as I was approx -9 in both eyes and now can see better than when I wore contact lenses. It's the best thing I ever did. For those who still have blurry vision a week after the op- I had that for about a month afterwards and when my eyes got dry they were very blurry but now they have settled down. Up until last week I still had to use artificial tears 3 or ...  More...

Had eyes operated on Sunday 8 Sept 2002 in Edinburgh and so far brilliant! Took a couple of weeks to settle down but since then no looking back - just forward as far as I like! Would like to hear how the woman before me and the man after me got on. We'd been cancelled due to illness from the week before (twice) and were all pretty fed up before the operation! We had a change of surgeon because of it. If they remember me, please add a comment.  More...

I had my first aftercare appointment today. It’s been nearly two weeks since I had Lasek at Finchley Road. I am generally happy with the results so far, although I still have a little difficulty focusing with my left eye sometimes. However, if I realised the customer service was so bad I think I would have held on to my money a little longer before going with Optimax. I arrived for the appointment and was told that the Dr that performed the surgery called in sick, but they would have someone else see me. I was eventually seen around 45mins late. (Can we charge them if they are late for the appointment?!). I was able to read only the third line of the chart, which, to my surprise is goo ...  More...

I had Lasik treatment at Finchley Road on Tuesday 25th February by Dr Patel. At my consultation the previous Friday, Dr Patel had said that he would see me at 10.00am on Tuesday and then have a check at around 11.30 before being sent home. My appointment was for 9.00 so that all forms etc could be completed before seeing Dr Patel. I was in fact seen by Dr Patel at 9.45 with the procedure completed by 10.00 and back in the waiting room. Check up by 11.00 and on my way home soon after. I was terrified sitting in the waiting room before the treatment, "am I doing the right thing" seemed to be buzzing around my head constantly. An hour and a half later after the most painless proce ...  More...

There seems to be a "Big" problem with mass confusion amongst many of us who have undergone surgery and now are unable to focus on close up work. (Today for example I phoned the Leeds clinic, instead of the Liverpool) Do!! Purely because I am struggling to read small print. I feel this "issue" has not been/is not being explained or indeed addressed properly to many, leaving a lot of people feeling very scared, and its a big shame so many people are left worried and confused about how their short sight vision should or indeed can improve? We need to start getting in touch with people on the board who have had this treatment done months ago, and find out what we can expect the long term ...  More...

I have just returned from the one week post-op consultation. I still find it incredibly hard to focus on both far (like number plates) AND near (like computers/newspapers). Its because my left eye feels very blurry. Its been the same since the day after the op. I am 27 years old and was -6.25 in both eyes (with perfect close up sight). This is my eye test results as of today (1 week after op). R +.25 / -0.50 X 70 L + 0.50 / -0.50 X 135 As you can see, both short and long sight are now affected and it’s causing me great focusing difficulties which is a big discomfort. I was told by the optometrist that it will 'probably' improve slightly, but I don’t feel very confident as it’s ...  More...

Went for my 10 day check up & the vision in my right eye is perfect, my left eye is slightly short-sighted & was told there is still time for improvement, tho if it doesnt im still perfectly happy with the results, its just mildly irritating at the moment, because im not use to the `slight difference, im sure in a few mths time when I come accustomed to it, it wont bother me at all.  More...

Hi all, after my previous post expressing serious concerns about my left eye after having both eyes zapped (Posted on 12 Feb 2003 ~ double vision, un-clear vision etc), here is the update 1 month post op. The best advice about EPIFLAP PRK (LASEK) I can give is GIVE IT TIME FOLKS after the op. Ignore the 'miracle stories' on this message board, and if your eyes take a while to adjust, as did mine, it will only push you into forming rapid conclusions that are not necessarily true. I am now slightly over 1 month post op, and my eyes are still changing. The double vision has now settled down. It is now only very minor and improving day by day, and no longer noticeable under normal light. T ...  More...

Hi All - Just had my consultatioin for LASIK with Dr Patel at Finchley Road. Most likely I will book to have the surgery done in the very near future. I would greately appricaite any comments/information that the experienced people here feel I should be aware of. My prescription is: (Right eye) Sphr: -3.25, Cyl:-1.25, Ax:7, BVD:14, Keratometry: 40x7/42.5x97, top:12, Pachymetry: 520, Avg Curve:41.5 (Left eye) Sphr: -2.75, Cyl: -2, Ax:172, BVD: 14, Keratometry: 40.75x175/43x85, top:12, Pachymetry: 516, Avg Curve:41.75 Pupil size: 6mm I have a copy of all my results if anyone wants further information. I found the consultation experience to be quite good. The staff were friendly and ...  More...

I had bi-lateral LASIK performed on Thursday 27th February, by Dr Manek Patel at the Finchley Road, London branch. My prescription was -6.75 in my left eye and -8.25 in my right, and I had some astigmatism too. I am 35 years of age. My appointment was scheduled for 11am, I arrived in plenty of time, and was seen slightly early. The whole procedure took less than 20 mins, including the lasering itself, which took about 1 minute per eye. The surgery itself was completely painless, just some mild discomfort whilst my eyes were clamped open one by one, but I can live with that.I also found Dr Patel to be completely reassuring, informing me what was happening at all stages during the surge ...  More...

I had my Lasik treatment 28 February at the Birmingham Clinic, my Surgeon was John Hill, he explained every detail of the procedure, I was very reassured. He gave me an explanation about my two main concerns, 'dry eyes' and 'night vision. He explained to me that the dry eyes normally only effects patients who already have dry eyes, and the 'night vision' problem normally only effects patients with large pupils, 8mm and over, he measured mine at 5mm. I felt no pain during or after the surgery I could see straight away although my vision was blurred, the following morning my vision felt almost perfect. I returned to the clinic for the aftecare appointment the following day, I was told ...  More...

I too had lasik treatment at Birmingham by John Hill on 27 Feb 2003, as did my brother. My prescription was -6.00 and -7.00 and my brother was around -10. We both felt totally reassured by the confidence of John Hill and went ahead with the treatment. It went brilliantly and neither of us experienced any pain. I was reading number plates on the way back to our hotel just 30 mins after treatment. We are both amazed by the results-my brother was out playing in his band on 29 Feb which is quite remarkable. I just keep thinking I have my contact lenses in because it just doesn't seem possible that I can see unaided. Feel free to contact me if I can be of help to anyone that is consider ...  More...

I had both eyes treated with Lasek at Finchley Road on the 19th February. I had -3.5 in my left eye and -1.25 in my right with lots of astigmatism in both. I called for an appointment and told that consultation and treatment would happen all on the same day, this was fine for me however and agreed. I didn't realise till later that this is optional - so if it’s not for you let them know you want it on separate days. The Optimax staff were quite friendly but didn't want to strike up any kind of relationship though and seemed to want me in and out without any fuss. I was told I had large pupils (8mm).I suspected this and was told this was fine though and they can compensate by lasering ...  More...

Have been treated with LASIK (eyes being -5/-6) on 31st of January. I wanted to go for LASEK as the optometrist had told me that I, with my prescription, was suitable for both and that the two eyes could be treated at the same day with LASEK too (one of my criteria). At the day of surgery however, my surgeon Mr Chatterjee, told me he would recommend LASIK because of less chance in developing haze. The first week after the op was fine- could see absolutely perfectly! The second week however, my vision started to deteriorate. I went back to the clinic as I started to get worried and seemingly I am shortsighted again (do not know my prescription but is far less than before). Still, cannot s ...  More...

Just to add a couple of comments regarding my lasik with Dr Patel, its now been 3 days, and my right eye is perfect (was -6) and my left is still teh same as it was after the op (about -0.75/-1). I find it very difficult to focus on my computer screen as my left eye seems to ruin my vision when i look at things with both eyes. I would love to hear from others who had one eye perfected but the other not so good, and would like to know if it became better within time. Its such a shame, because the whole point is ruined as i saw better WITH glasses. Especially close up reading and computer work (im only 27 years old so close range should not be a problem). Its because of one eye not bein ...  More...

Hi, I just thought some younger people (25>) might be intersted to know how my op went etc on 12th Feb. I'm only 20 (the youngest age the procedure can be done- too young for ultra lase) and was explained that my eyes are "relatively" stable for someone of my age. I was about -7.5 in both eyes and have so far had pretty good success. Went back for sight test next day and comfortably had 20/20 vision (read all but bottom line of chart). A week later - further improvement (including bottom line) and given the okay. Was told about the small posibilty of having night vision problems (glare round street lights etc). Short update on my peepers!! I had surgery on the 6th Feb @ Liverpool (see previous posting). Today is the first day I have not had bad eye strain at work or driving followed by headaches and eyes feeling like a bloodhounds! (and not looking far off either). The past two weeks at work has been a "big" struggle, with close up vision very difficult, I have just felt exhausted and like my contacts were in and needed to come out for a clean and give my eyes a rest, only I cant do that now. If I was to have it done again, knowing how I have been this time I would take at least 3 weeks off my job, had never thought just how tiring eye strain is. I just saw the optimax ad and thought "oh, ba ...  More...

I had Lasek on 20.02.03 (Thursday) at Finchley Road by Dr. Ayoubi. I think waiting in the waiting room is the worst thing cos your thinking do i really want this done ? and loads and loads of what ifs go through your mind. Dr. Ayoubi spoke through all the things that could go wrong and was very helpful. The laser treatment did not hurt whatsoever and I am really wimpy. Dr Ayoubi talked through the whole thing and put me at ease. I walked out with one large bandage on one eye and one clear eye shield on the other. My husband said I was getting weird looks. All I could see was about a metre in front of me everything else was a blur. The pain killers (six tablets) however, for me, were ...  More...

Had my surgery on the 12th of February, conducted by D Masilami, Prescription was -2.50 left eye & -2.75 right eye. Treatment was no problem. Eyes uncomfortable for the first night even with the pain killers and sleeping tablets, Had my bandage lenses removed 3 days later. When removing the right hand lens had excruciating pain in the eye. Doctor put a few drops of anaesthetic and gave me the cream for home treatment After a week my left eye had perfect vision, the right lagging behind slightly Today had my first aftercare appointment, I am +0.50 in each eye, even though my left is far sharper in vision. I had my op yesterday afternoon with Dr Patel. I felt really bad yesterday,, but when I woke up today I felt marvellous. I could see with no glasses. My vision feels a wee bit strange. It feels as though I have my glasses on but they are not so clean and need a wipe. Anyway, I had my post check-up a couple of hours ago. My eyes were in both eyes -6.25. I asked for a quick eye check during my check-up and its now more or less 0 in my right eye and -0.75 in my left. I don't understand why my left is still quite high compared to my right. It is making me quite dizzy because its hard to focus when there is a difference of that size between left and right eyes. I hope my left eye becomes 0 too so ...  More...

I had my PRK treatment on Monday 17th Feb 2003 at the Manchester Clinic. I came out of the clinic looking like something out of the movie The Fly with big plastic pod like things stuck to my face!! To stop myself from scratching my eyes no doubt. I strongly recommend that you take all the pain killers on offer and also take the sleeping tablets as this is the only way I got any rest. The first couple days were a bit of a nightmare as I couldn't see very well and had a constant headache. Putting in the cream and eye drops is difficult if you are on your own, make sure someone is to hand to help you as I couldn't even see well enough to do this for myself. I do think that the 3 - 5 ...  More...

Last posted 20th Feb I had my bandage contact lenses out on Saturday morning. Eyes were a bit sore for a couple of hours but soon settled down. I was not offered an opinion on how my eyes were doing (I guess I should have asked!). I'll ask when I go back on 2nd March. They seem OK except for a bit of ghosting in my left eye. I think you pretty much get what you pay for at Optimax. It is much cheaper than most other companies and gives you a no frills service. If you want pampering go elsewhere but if you just want the procedure with no fuss at a reasonable price I guess they are pretty good value.  More...

I'm having lasik next Monday (3/3/03) at Finchley Road with Dr Almasri. Am really nervous now and was having doubts today but after wanting it for 7 years I'll defiantly go through with it. My prescription is -5R and -5.5L. I have quite large pupils so was told I have slightly more risk of side effects. Anyone else been told this? I'd appreciate an email from anyone with any advice or comments. And I'll let you know how it goes.  More...

Had my bandage lens out today, eyes felt a bit gritty for about an hr after. Left eye was still blurry this morning, but now 9.30pm much better, almost as good as the right, not perfect but almost there. My first aftercare appointment is next week, shall let you know the full outcome then. Still very happy with Optimax.  More...

Had Lasek treatment on both eyes special offer 790) on the 21st Feb, at the Birmingham clinic by Dr Anand. Found all the staff very friendly & answered all the questions I asked (which wasn't many because got all my answers off here). My prescription was L2.00 R2.79, large pupils (which have more risky in night halos ect, but Dr put my mind at rest. Had the op earlier than expected as one patient didn't turn up. Op went with no problem, felt absolutely nothing, though was uncomfortable with pressure on my eye at one time. seemed to take quite a while in loosening & pushing the epithelium to one side, but as I couldn't feel it, I was ok. When he actually lasered my eye, I just spelt somethi ...  More...

Had the Epiflap treatment at the Finchley Rd clinic in London on Thurs 20th Feb with Dr Almasari. I was -3 in each eye with an astigmatism in both eyes. Dr went through all the pros and cons of the treatments and at the end of the consultation asked whether I wanted one or two eyes together, I asked for eyes advice and he suggested one for safety reasons, however, as I already booked time off work and people to look after me I opted for both. In treatment room for 20 mins, pain free but found it important not to think about it as you can see everything! Straight after the appt vision was hazy within half an hour they became really light sensitive - I would recommend sunglasses whatever the t ...  More...

I had my consultation with DR Patel from the London Clinic a couple of weeks ago and I am due in tomorrow morning for the Lasik treatment (-6ish in both eyes). I have one comment. My consultation was on a day I was recovering from a mild cold, and my eyes were a little bit watery. I was not happy with the eye test as I could not give a proper reading (between the green/red circles on the chart) as my eyes kept watering and the glass kept hazing up on the machine. Also, I saw that she was unprofessional as she kept changing the machine and I wasn't even looking straight at the chart as the machine was pointing to the side of it. I was uncomfortable that the woman who did the checking was ...  More...

I had my treatment done in Manchester. Please get in touch and put my mind at rest cause the reception staff are pretty useless..... Thanks  More...

I had treatment on the 6th of Feb at Liverpool. Had been considering it for over 12 months and the £200 offer swung it for me. I had lasik on both eyes, (minus 1.5 left and 2.5 with astigma right) Treatment went well, and after had one eye bandaged and one covered with a clear dust shield. No tea and biscuit after surgery, not impressed. Anyway, friend helped me to car, and as my left eye was not covered it was agony all the way home from Liverpool in the car. Got home, boyfriend went mad about why both eyes were not bandaged, as both had been operated on, good point. He bandaged eye and put me to bed. Woke up later in terrible pain, and with acute welders flash in both eyes. This ...  More...

Today I had my pos one month check up. My last comment on this web site was 24th Jan after my post 1 week check at which time I reported that my left eye was 0.00 and my right was 0.25. Today it appeared that both eye's are now 0.00 which in my books is 20/20. I do read a lot of reports on laser correction, whilst there appears to be few bad experience's in general most people are pleased, it is scary, bright lights and car lights do appear a little brighter to me and my very close up vision is not quite as sharp as it was, however these are so minor effects that I would definitely do it again. The positive's are fantastic. Dr Patel at Finchley Road was recommended to me by others and I w ...  More...

I had PRK Epiflap yesterday (19th Feb) on both eyes at the Birmingham clinic. It seems they always have special offers hence I paid £850 including the consultation for both eyes. I was first in line but due to some problems (computer crashing, someone fainting) I ended up in the hot seat over 1.5 hours late. My surgeon Mr Anand seemed slightly nervous but was a nice chap and all went well. I have to say, the first 3/4 hours were pretty uncomfortable even with pain killers but the discomfort lessened throughout the day and I slept OK last night. I feel pretty good this morning and wont be needing any more painkillers. I feel as though I haven't experienced too much pain (maybe because Mr A ...  More...

Going for consultation at Finchley Road this Friday, with Lasik surgery next Tuesday 25th (both eyes). Have been reading this web site to try and gain more information from people who have had the surgery. I have to say that I am still going. A little nervous but I am so fed up with wearing gas permeable lenses, alongside getting to an age where I need reading glasses that I am willing to take the plunge - unless anyone has any other reason that they care to disclose....... I HAD BOTH MY EYES TREATED AT THE FINCHLEY RD, LONDON CLINIC USING THE PRK LASEK METHOD. THE COST INC. CONSULTATION FEE WAS £850.00. THIS WAS £200.00 CHEAPER THAN NORMAL DUE TO A SPECIAL OFFER. I HAD TREATMENT ON THE SAME DAY AS THE CONSULTATION WHICH WAS 3 WEEKS AGO. I DID FIND THE CONSULTATION WAS OVER VERY QUICKLY AND ONLY 20 MINUTES AFTER THAT I WAS HAVING THE SURGERY. THIS WAS QUITE SCARY AS I FEEL THAT MORE TIME SHOULD HAVE BEEN TO PROPERLY ASSESS THE SITUATION. ANYHOW I PROCEEDED WITH THE TREATMENT WHICH WAS PAINLESS BUT THE PAIN AFTERWARDS WAS AWFUL AND VERY UNCOMFORTABLE. I HAVE BETTER THAN 20/20 VISION AND NO GHOSTING OR HALO EFFECTS. Attended Optimax in Glasgow on 30th Jan. and had my consultation and bi-lateral treatment on the same day. Dr. Berry put my mind at ease, and answered all my queries. The worst thing about lasik is plucking up the courage to do it! As most people have said, there was no pain, the only discomfort being the pressure of the device when the flap was going to be made. This doesn't last long. Dr. Berry told me what was going on, but without going into detail. I had read that for a lot of people the improvement was immediate, and I was one of them. I walked out of the clinic with plastic eye shields taped to my face -I must have looked great-with my eyes watering, but I could see! My eyes continued to ...  More...

Went back for my 2nd check up on 20th Jan. Saw another optician, who was much more thorough. Said I'm only +25 now in the corrected eye (was +1.50 at last check-up). She also said it can take circa 3/6 months for the vision to be perfect. It's now been circa 2 months since I had one eye corrected and overall I'm very happy with the outcome. I am looking at getting my other eye done in April.  More...

At my initial consultation it was recommended that due to corneal thinness that one eye be treated by Lasek at Glasgow and the other, which was described as borderline, be treated by Lasik at the Edinburgh clinic. Imagine my consternation however, after travelling to Edinburgh, that the surgeon Dr. Boytha was unwilling, after looking at my notes, to perform Lasik on that eye and instead recommended Lasek because she thought the corneal safety margin after treatment would be insufficient. I don't know about other peoples opinion of Dr. Boytha but I was impressed that she was willing to recommend, despite the loss to the clinic, the cheaper and safer option. I went ahead with the Lasek op i ...  More...

I had Bi-Lateral Lasek (PRK) at the Glasgow Clinic on 1st February 2003 by Dr. Anwar. (-2.5 Left + -3.25 Right). I was obviously pretty stressed out on the morning of the treatment but after my consultation with Dr. Anwar I felt much more relaxed as he explained what the treatment involved and answered all my questions. The treatment itself was totally painless and Dr. Anwar talked to me all the way through it which helped immensely. My recovery was relatively painless (watery eyes the first night and bright lights proved a problem for the first few days). My right eye appeared to recover quicker however by the following Sunday my vision was excellent in both eyes. I had my check-up today a ...  More...

I had Epiflap PRK (LASEK) on both eyes on 31st Jan 03 at the London Optimax Clinic. The op was strange and a bit scary, but not in any way painful. I was -3.25, and -3.5 with a degree of astigmatim in both eyes. I believe the astigmatism in my left eye was worse. After treatment, for a week, clear vision was not an option! It was like looking underwater with your eyes open. Any light just caused a haze effect, and I found it hard to focus on anything. Now after 12 days, my right eye has 100% sharp vision, for distance and closeup. My left eye, I am starting to worry about. Currently, I have a light ghost image below anything I look at, and sight is no where near as sharp as my right, a ...  More...

For information only I had my eyes corrected at the London Clinic in November 2000. One of the reasons I decided to go ahead was the fact that I could look up my surgeons details on their website and check his details and the amount of experience. Also the fact that my initial appointment was with the surgeon to see if my eyes were suitable for this type of treatment and I would see him if I had any particular problems post-treatment which I felt to be a comfort. From a price point of view they offered good value for money and I would still recommend them as the following comments I will make would apply to any clinic - I would also stress that your surgeon is the one using the equipment ...  More...

Allison, if you look at the Optimax website they use Nidek 5000 and the Technolas 217. I think most of them are Nidek. Boots seem to be using the LADARVISION. Most people would probably say that the Boots machine is more modern, fancy tracker and so on. The laser is only one part of the final result, though. An experienced surgeon might be worth an awful lot (would you want a good tradesman with ok tools or someone who had little idea what they were doing and the latest kit?) At -4 why LASIK? (Indeed, why LASIK period?)  More...

Why are Optimax cheaper? I think part of the reason is royalty payments for use of the lasers. I think I am right in saying Nidek is a one-off payment while some of the others is per use. Plus lots of costs are fixed costs (receptionists, rates, heating + lighting, laser technicians) so if you can increase your throughput you can dramatically reduce your costs. I think that's the economics of it.  More...

From what I'm reading, it doesn't seem like many patients seem overly impressed, there seems to be near 20/20 but not perfect eyesight, as blurry night vision, halos etc seem to be a very common after-effect. Is anyone genuinely 100% happy with it? I spoke to a "sales consultant" from Optimax (phone) she booked me in for a consultation and said that I could they would also book me in for Epiflap too the same day. Elsewhere I've been advised not to have treatment on the same day as to be wary of this practice ... so if they are so established why are they "pressurising" customers oops I mean patients into same day treatment? I would however, opt for Epiflap over LASIK as it has been stud ...  More...

25th January 2003 I was booked into Optimax, Bristol, for consultation and PRK Epiflap treatment - feeling very nervous. My prescription is -2.25(R) and -1.75(L) with astigmatism and I am aged 52, I currently manage with just glasses for short-sightedness. Even at this advanced age I am vain enough to not want to wear glasses but cannot get on with contact lenses! The Dr suggested the best course of treatment would be to treat the right (dominant) eye for short-sightedness and leave the left eye as is, to avoid the need for reading glasses (monovision) and this certainly sounds the best of both worlds! I mentioned that I had tried contact lenses to achieve the same result but without su ...  More...

Had my 1 week check up, after Bi Lat, Lasik, everything fine, read the eye chart bottom line, so 20/20 vision restored. check up did show left eye at 0.00, right at +0.25 but this is no problem, just slight over correction. Still think it's been the best decision I have ever made and best value for money ever spent.  More...

I had my laser treatment at the Edinburgh clinic and am very happy with the result. I am amazed of the impact it has had on my life. To take the children to school with these rainy days and no glasses that steam up is without a doubt worth it. I was very impressed with the staff, I had done a lot of research and they took the time to explain everything to me. The staff were very helpful, took time to answer all my questions even my silly ones. I am so happy I made the decision to go ahead and have my laser eye treatment. I now look forward to swimming with my children, no hassle with glasses or worrying about losing a contact lens in the pool. I had no problems with waiting times, after bein ...  More...

Treated with PRK on 21st December at the Optimax clinic in Manchester. My eyes were roughly -3 and -2. The surgery experience was ok overall but I am still unhappy with the results. I was told by the surgeon that bandage lenses were not needed, wrong!! I had to get a doctor out the night of the surgery to prescribe some proper pain killers. The tablets provided by Optimax were completely inadequate. 4 weeks later and I still do not have driving vision in either eye. Despite all the information available on PRK I still do not know if my eye sight will improve over time. Most people seem to be clear within two weeks. I have a second check-up next month and I pray I do not have to go t ...  More...

I had Lasik Bi-Lat at Finchley Road, performed by Doctor Patel on Thursday 16th Jan. My prescription was -3.50 and -3.00, Today I'm seeing 20/20 what a result, I did allot of research on the subject before making a firm commitment to go ahead. all my concerns (of which I had many) were put to rest, the surgery was completely without pain, after about 3 hours my vision started to clear and I could see things that were only a blur before the procedure, I had some mild discomfort that evening. The following day clear vision, boring everyone I spoke to about the wonder of un-aided sight. Optimax, Dr Patel and a little of my time, has certainly changed my life. EXCELLENT!  More...

Had PRK treatment on both eyes on January 10th. My prescription was -2.5 in both eyes. I did suffer allot of discomfort for the first 36 hours, I was almost blind for that time, and there was a lot of pain. Thankfully the pain killers did do a good gob. Within 2 hours I could see pretty good with 1 eye. 7 days later and my 1 eye was perfect and the other eye was the SAME as it was before I had the surgery. By now I was very worried...but thought I would wait for my after care in 3 days time. Woke up on day 8 and...well it was a miracle, I could see clearly in both eyes !! It all seems worth it now. The only downside to Optimax was the doctors seemed very un-sympathetic and did rush the consu ...  More...

I think that people can make their own opinions about whether to go ahead with the surgery- whichever type. Yes I have had LASIK and in 10 or 20 years I may have problems with my eyes- but who knows whether it will of been induced by LASIK or just happened naturally- maybe through contact lens wearing, using sun beds or something else. I smoke but I don't stress every time I light up about shortening my life- live for the day! You also cannot compare stats from the US with here as they have had many disasters with laser eye surgery (i.e. cowboys doing the procedures) compared with the UK who have had minimal complications with any surgery. My optician couldn't recommend LASIK enough to m ...  More...

Everyone has opinions, there are always other possible causes (corneal ectasia could be caused by nearly anything), live for the day, there is a safe "UK way" to shear and ablate a soft structure half the thickness of a credit card - think it best to say nothing!  More...

I have booked in to the Liverpool branch of Optimax for consultation on Saturday 18th January and treatment if I'm suitable on the same day, is this normal? I am absolutely terrified of the whole process since reading the consent form, all this talk of permanent blindness and am starting to wonder if I can live with my glasses. Another thing that worries me is that I am booked to have both eyes done on same day, is this advisable ?Will all questions be answered at the consultation? I would appreciate any comments good or bad. just one more thing, is there a sensation to want to rub your eyes in following days please email me at mik1morgan@hotmail.com  More...

Incidentally, there is no shortage of people saying that given their high prescription only LASIK was suitable. The major prospective randomized trial, using 200 eyes from -6 to -15, with an average prescription of -9.5, could show no difference at thirty days between LASIK and PRK. Or rather a few of the LASIK patients were in serious trouble with flap problems, the PRK group could see slightly better uncorrected (although this was statistically insignificant) and the LASIK group had slightly better best corrected vision (although this was also statistically insignificant. Since that trial LASEK, the use of vitamin C before surgery and the use of mytomicin after surgery have all made sur ...  More...

Follow on from note of 9 December. I've had three aftercare appointments since the operation (PRK having been -2.25 in both eyes). My right eye corrected much quicker than the left which I found disconcerting for a while but things have improved over time. I'm currently on steroid eye drops which seem to be doing the trick. I was able to drive after about 8 days but sometimes struggled to focus with one eye being stronger than the other. After about 3 weeks I was able to drive and do everything that I had hoped for without thinking twice about it. I think I expected a more immediate dramatic improvement and I did panic after about 2 weeks when I was still struggling and I started to regret h ...  More...

Went back for my 1 month post op checkup last week and both my eyes are now zero- which is great considering I was -9 and -10 before the op. Yes the op is completly painless, it is uncomfortable knowing what is being done to your eyes and being able to see around you albeit blurred, but grin and bear it for 15mins or so and it's finished and your sight will be starting to improve as you sit up. Then just go home and sleep, put drops in as directed and watch your sight come to you (cheesy I know but it's true)!!! Easy as that- honestly it is, I wish I'd had it done years ago. Yes Dr Patel is great- very professional and confident and his results speak for themselves.  More...

Have now found what was causing the blurred vision. Basically my eye has been over-corrected and I now have a left eye at +0.5. This is mighty strange as I have been short sighted for most of my life and to now be long sighted is weird. To be able to read properly, or view a computer screen I had to buy a cheap set of reading glasses. They have now given me a contact lens for my left eye at +0.5. So, now I still wear contacts just as before. Basically no further forward and the pocket a damn sight lighter. Just the other day I had an eMail from the current affairs editor of the BBC, who are doing some research on Laser eye treatment, and it's successes or otherwise, although I'm sure it's t ...  More...

I had Lasik treatment by Dr Patel at the Finchley Road branch on 7th January. He had been recommended to me by 2 people that i work with. My prescription was -3.5 in both eyes and id been wearing glasses for over 20 years. Throughout the whole operation he was continually talking and reassuring me, all the time letting me know what was happening and putting me at ease. It really did help. On the way home (by tube which was a slight mistake i now feel) i did feel slightly nauseous and found it a bit uncomfortable (but not painful) to open my eyes properly but after a few hours it got much better and by the evening it was amazing what i could now see without my glasses. Its now less than a we ...  More...

Had Lasik treatment on 12/12/02 at the Finchley Road Surgery with Dr.Patel my prescription was -1.5 & -1.75, I basically needed glasses for driving and T.V. I found the whole experience looking back a bit like going to the dentist, which was a touch disconcerting as they were about to Laser my eye's. However the reason's for me adding to this Web site are these two basic points: 1) Dr Patel was excellent, he continually calmed me down during the whole process. 2) He left me with 20/20 vision, I'm ecstatic.  More...

Had PRK Epiflap in Croydon branch on 13th November. Was -2.75 and -2.5. Operation painless, although very disconcerting when the Epiflap is pushed aside! Day 1 felt like I had very bad flu, and very light sensitive. Took pain killers, so pain reduced to irritation more than anything. Also took sleep pills on first night but felt completely zonked next day so didn't take any more. Day 2 just light sensitive, vision pretty good although couldn't really look at anything for more than a few moments. Day 3 much better, able to go outside (with sun glasses), and watch TV. Stopped pain killers. Had bandage contacts out, eyesight excellent. After 1st week had check up, reading near to 20/20. No ...  More...

-3.00 both eyes. Booked consultation and treatment for Thursday 19th Dec. Wouldn't recommend - suggest consultation first so you know exactly what treatment you're having on the day. As I'd decided to have both eyes PRK'd on 19th, but after discussing mono-vision option with surgeon (Mr Ayoubi) changed mind and only had one eye done. The actual treatment was very quick and painless - surgeon really nice - did not feel under any pressure to have the treatment on the day and talked me through the actual surgery. Expect to rest for the next 4/5 days - pain killers and sleeping tabs knocked me out. Started to see clearer after 7 days -drove after 10. Had aftercare appointment 31st Dec which ...  More...
