I had Lasik on 02/10/03 (2 days ago) and am absolutely delighted with the whole experience and outcome. I'm at work at the moment with better than 20/20 vision. My prescription was -9 in the left eye and -6 in the right and I have worn glasses and contacts since the age of 11, I'm now 29. Professor Mortimer performed my surgery, at the Shaftsbury avenue clinic and he was excellent. He was obviously very experienced in his field and explained realistic expectations and disscussed possible side-effects and potential problems without being frightening, in fact I felt very reassured after speaking to him.I was nervous about the proceedure because I was found to have larger pupils, which increases the risk of side effects such as halo's, ghosting and starbursts. Also, due to my prescription it was explained that I might have to undergo another lasik treatment to get the maximum effect.
Thankfully, neither of these complications have occurred and my vision is now perfect. I am religiously using my eye drops and using the eye sheilds to sleep.
I was offered valium prior to the proceedure, which I'm sure alot of people would find helpful, I declined this but was grateful for the sedative to sleep post proceedure as my eyes were beginning to water and be slightly uncomfortable. The nurse added some extra local anasthetic drops to keep me comfortable for the short journey home.
Everybody was friendly and professional and all played their part in making my experience as uncomplicated and comfortable as possible, everything was explained clearly to me at every stage, which was very reassuring.
Hopefully my recovery will be as simple as all the rest of the stages involved, and I'm following their clear guidelines to try to ensure no infection or wrinkling of the flap occurs. They have a very throrough follow up proceedure and a helpline which you can ring in emergencies if you feel you need to, so you are never alone with your symptoms.
I'm looking forward to a bright future without my contacts/glasses and would recommend anybody considering it to go for it, it is amazingly simple to change your life.
