Surgeon: Mr. D. Gartry I Have just had eyetest at 3 month stage after having wavefront lasik surgery on the 18th August 2003. Results: +1.00 and -0.75 cyl in both eyes. Original prescription: -1.75, -1.50 cyl in Right, -2.25, -1.25cyl in Left. Seems they have been over corrected and still with some astigmatism, not sure if things are still healing or likely to change. Eyesight seems fine to me, and I don't need to wear glasses for reading, as yet, at 45 years old. MG.  More...

3 month results. Had Wavefront Lasik with Mr Gartry on 9th August 03. Was originally -5 (roughly) in both eyes, day after the op my vision was 'perfect' (read bottom line of eye chart etc). As of two months after the op my eyes have healed (perfectly well) but to -1 and -1.25. I noticed that I could no longer see a TV clearly across a room and road signs were more blurry. I saw Gartry 6 weeks after the op and he told me to get tested 3 months post op and get back to him. I guess he might suggest another op, I don't know. He said we had to wait at least three months to be sure which is fair enough. I now use specs for driving (like to see road signs well in advance!), but I don't need ...  More...

Had Wavefront Lasik surgery yesterday at Moorfields with Mr David Gartry. Had checked out a few clinics but decided to go to Moorfields as they have the best experience and presumably you would be in the right place if anything went wrong. Mr Gartry has over 20 years of specialist interest is laser surgery - I don't believe I could have found anyone better. I opted for Wavefront as this offers the opportunity to also correct the 5% of abberations in the eye which a standard eye test cannot pick up. Wavefront is also reputed to leave less problems with the night time halo effect around lights. Felt very nervous immediately beforehand but Mr Gartry talked me through the whole procedure a ...  More...

I had Wavefront Surgery with Mr Garty at Moorfields on Sat 13 Sept. The operation itself was painless and apart from some minor discomfort and stinging that same afternoon, I can honestly say that the whole procedure was a doddle. The first week after the operation I was delighted with the results and could see perfectly clearly. It is now nearly a month since the surgery and I am concerned because my level of vision is getting worse not better. I am hoping this is just a case of waiting for things to heal and settle down and nothing more serious. Has anyone else had this experience and what was the outcome?  More...

My eye surgeon was Julian Stevens, I had treatment on Friday 7th October. I cannot complain about any part of the service.I had Lasik with Wavefront Surgery. I was informed about all possible problems all along the way and was able to ask questions at anytime. My eyes were measured in 3 seperate ways to ensure acurate readings. I was made to feel like an individual and not a patient. I feel happy with my sight today. My left eye remains slightly out of focus but the prescription (-4.00) was higher than the right eye (-2.50). I am told that this will settle in the coming weeks. My eyes feel a little dry but this is norma and be expected for the next few weeks. I was also told that I can walk ...  More...

Update on my wavefront lasik, 18th Aug. Had my '1month' follow-up on the 24th Sept. everything fine. 6/5 in right eye, slightly better in left, am extremely happy with results, have had no problems whatsoever not even dry eyes. However, have awarded 4 stars not 5, as neither of my two follow-ups were with Mr. Gartry for one reason or another, which was a bit disappointing. At a cost of 4k I thought that I would have been guaranteed that at least, and it would have been nice to have been able to thank him personally.  More...

I had Lasik treatment at Moorfields with Miss Ficker on 20th August after many years of thinking about it but being too scared just in case… It’s now been over a month and I’m really pleased. The initial consultation was professional as was the whole procedure on the day – it also helped to see another patient who’d just had it done saying how painless it was! It was painless but slightly surreal during the operation – I was glad of someone holding my hand and being reminded to start breathing again once it was done! I slept for a few hours once I got home and was then amazed at the clear long sighted view when looking over the garden. However TV was slightly blurred as was print. The ...  More...

This is a one month follow up on my Wavefront guided LASEK operations. The slight discomfort I had felt during the second week was sorted out with another bottle of anti-inflammatory drops. Apparently Mr Stevens prefers to use drops for only one week after LASEK, while other surgeoans use them for longer, up to a month. There is a trade off between using the drops for comfort and the side effect of the drops which delays healing. But using the drops for another week instantly sorted out any discomfort. I no longer use any drops, nor do I have even the slightest discomfort. It is now 5 full weeks since the operations and as expected, vision continues to improve. My left eye no ha ...  More...

I had Lasik with Miss Ficker on Tuesay 20th August. The procedure was brill. No pain or even discomfort. I didn't even get any discomfort afterwards. I was a little confused when having the pre-op tests as being myopic I knew that I would need reading glasses afterwards which I didn't previously. The optician mentioned monovision which under corrects one eye but Miss Ficker advised agains it. It is now 36 hours since the treatment and I have wonderful long vision but I can't read any print and close up is blurry. I am slightly worried about this but I hope that it will clear sufficiently to only necessitiate reading glasses for very small print. It does feel weird without glasses but all i ...  More...

I had wavefront lasik surgery on 18th August by Mr Gartry at Moorfields Hospital. My appointment was for 11.30am, went in for surgery around 12. I chose Mr Gartry after months of reading everything I could find and decided he was the one I could trust. My prescription pre-surgery was -1.75 with –1.5 astigmatism right, -2.25 with -1.25 astigmatism left. Actual surgery was very quick, only took around 15min, I found it to be totally painless with virtually no discomfort, I felt like I was just viewing something at very close range! The worse part for me was when the sticky tape was removed from around my eye that holds the eyelashes out of the way! Vision immediately after surgery was fai ...  More...

I had LASEK done on both eyes on August 6 by Julian Stevens. I have been looking into laser eye surgery since about 1991, but had been consistently turned away as being in the too hard basket. Twice in 2002 I visited laser eye clinics and did the full basket of tests only to be turned away at the end. The last guy I saw in Harley Street was at least good enough to explain why. I had a difficult right eye with an irregular topography. It was more than the small amount of myopia, and more than the astigmatism, it was a very irregular surface. He went on to tell me that no commercial clinic in the world would be able to treat it with current technology, but there were two guys at Moor ...  More...

It was an extremely hard decision to make but one that I don’t regret. My myopia is considered low –3.5 in each eye, so was surgery a risk I should take? Could I be blind? Would I die? Would it hurt forever? After hearing and seeing adverts for LASIK I went for a consultation with another clinic. They said it was possible to treat me, however because I have larger pupils I may have halos/glare. I also did not meet the surgeon that was going to treat me This was what put me off. Later I read an article on the new wavefront (improved lasik) technology, it was more accurate as it overrides the problem that a larger pupil can give. Mr Julian Stevens was highly recommended by a friend of a friend ...  More...

I had Wavefront Lasik with Mr Gartry on Sat 9th June at 3.30pm. Pre-op I was –4.25 and –5.5. My qualms about the op were unfounded – for me it was a walk in the park. I’m very pleased with the results after two days. The bad bits of the whole process were: - During the op the equipment made various noises, not loud, but made me start a few times which I don’t think they appreciated. You need to keep still. - I unconsciously kept screwing my other eye hard shut, which apparently makes the open one harder to work on. Kept gently being reminded to ‘please open your other eye’… - Post op I had a small red bruise on one eye which I was not prewarned about – but its tiny and fading fast. Ap ...  More...

I had my Lasik in April with a prescription of approx -2.25 in both eyes. I did a lot of investigation prior to choosing Moorfields and basically chose them for the reasons usually cited...ie the consultants there are world class and likely to be of use if things did not go well. This was one occasion when I did not feel like economising. The surgery has been described often enough; indeed i felt as if I knew exactly what would be happening next ! Some reflections on Moorfields (Miss Ficker carried out my surgery) would include the following: They do NOT hold your hand...either physically or metaphorically. This is for people who do not want masses of reassurance and TLC. The servic ...  More...

Had Lasik Wavefront on 14 July at 12.30 with Mr Gartry at Moorfields. Left eye was -4 with an astigmatism and my right eye was -6. After 2 days it would seem that my left eye has probably 20/20 vision and my right eye is even better. I am extremely pleased. The operation was painless and efficient and slightly production like which was strangely reassuring as so many people were having this surgery done. Mr Garty told me I should not have spoken to him whilst the cornea flap was being cut, being an important part of the operation. However I was not really too aware that this was being done as I felt at ease with everyone there. The initial drops prior to the op sting a little but nothing ...  More...

Now over six weeks since Lasik surgery with Mr. Gartry. I had my final check up today and also had an eye test last week for a second opinion. I can read the 6/5 line unaided with each eye which is an execllent result (apparently this is the requirement for a commercial pilot). My left eye is +0.25 (very slight over-correction) and my right eye is -0.25 with -0.25 astigmatism (very slight under-correction). Pretty much as near perfect as you could get considering I was -7.25 with -1.25 astigmatism in each eye before surgery. There are a couple of minor issues remaining; dry eyes sometimes particuarly with airconditioned offices but this is getting better by the day (I still use artifici ...  More...

I had surgery on 7th May, carried out by Mr Julian Stevens. The treatment is quick and painless with no problems afterwards. I even drove back to the hospital the next day. I had been to see two other clinics for similar surgery and cannot recommend Moorfields and Mr Stevens enough. Now 12 days since Lasik with Mr. Gartry. My sight continued to improve for the first seven days (see last posting for day 2). I was comfortable to drive after a few days and have experienced slight halos at night although nothing to cause a problem. The only side-affect left is dry eyes but I was warned by Mr. Gartry that this affects around 20% of patients. I'm using Minims Artificial Tears about every hour and this fixes the problem. They seem to be the cheapest without preservatives and are easily available from chemists. My vision gets slightly blurry when my eyes are dry (worse the morning after a few beers). Apparently the dry eyes will last around a month. I'm still not up to r ...  More...

I had Lasik surgery with Dr. Gartry on Monday 7th April 2003. My presciption was -7.25 with 1.25 of astigmatism in each eye. I researched both Moorfields and Dr. Gartry beforehand and decided that if anything was to go wrong it was the right place with the right surgeon for fixing things up. I had my consultation with Dr. Gartry at his Harley Street surgery. I concur with a number of postings on this site. You have to go with a list of questions. He does not readily offer information but answers any question in a straight-forward and clear manner. I went to Moorfields for the operation at 08:15. They did the scans and tests 15 minutes before the operation. Two things to consider ...  More...

I had laser surgery at Moorfield Eye Hospital on both eyes on Tuesday 25th March, 2003. My surgeon was Mr Bruce Allan. I am in the early stages of adjustment but can report a very positive experience. I thought that the pre-surgical testing & consultations were thorough & efficiently conducted with the surgeons being at pains to provide explanations & respond to questions. I raised an enquiry about pre-existing night vision problems & was referred for further tests before surgery was confirmed: Wavefront analysis. I believe that the data from this test was used at least in part in my eventual surgery. Going in I had -3.75 vision in both eyes with an astigmatism in my left eye. T ...  More...

I recently had LASIK surgery performed by Mr Gartry on 22nd March and am extremely pleased with the results. My prescription was -6.5 and -7.5. It is now to very nearly the same as it was corrected with glasses/lenses. Two days after the op I could read the second from bottom line with my right eye and the third from bottom with the left. I am suffering from hazing around any bright lights (especially at night) but I understood this could happen and it will hopefully clear up in the next few weeks. The procedure was really quick and completely painless. I was nervous before surgery but was reassured seeing the person in for surgery before me. He walked out of the theatre with a sm ...  More...

had LASIK on Weds 19th March with Miss Linda Ficker. My previous concerns about pain during the operation were needless. the process can be best described as "wierd", with evrything happening quite lierally, in front of your eyes, but with no pain or even discomfort. Miss Ficker was very good in keeping me informed and we talked all the way through the procedure, which takes about 2 minutes in total, for each eye. Laser time was about 12-13 seconds for my prescription of -2.5 per eye. My follow up visit the next day was with her "fellow" Tom Poole, who described Miss Ficker's work as "beautiful". Even with my natural cynicism, I have no pain, no bloodshot eyes, fantastic vision and even und ...  More...

Had surgery with Mr Gartry at Moorfields on 3rd Feb 2003. I was –2 in both eyes, with astigmatism. The surgery was quick and although uncomfortable, was NOT painful. Eyes a bit gritty afterwards, but by the evening I could see perfectly and now, four weeks on I have 20:20 vision and have encountered no problems at all. Going for post check up in a couple of weeks. I cannot begin to describe how wonderful it is not to wear glasses/lenses anymore. Just waking up and being able to see – and everything so crystal clear – its amazing. I was driving the other day and it got really sunny – so I just reached down and put on my husband’s sun-glasses – no scrabbling around for prescription ...  More...

About eighteen months after I had lasik my left eye (previously -8.50) began regressing rather rapidly form -1.- with about .50 astigmatism to -3.25 with 2 astigmatism within a few months. My right eye has regresses slightly but not significantly. Has anyone experienced anything like this? I am particularly surprised as it happened so long after treatment. I am at the moment looking into the possibility of successful re-treatment.  More...

Was scheduled for LASIK with Mr Allan at end of Feb. Had a call on Monday 3rd to tell me there was a cancellation for 4th. I took it and can now read the bottom line on the chart with ease. I was -6.5 in one eye and -5.5 in the other. Painless procedure, minor discomfort and pain later. Minor haloes around lights in the evening.  More...

I had lasik surgery 9 months ago and am living with a constant sore painful left eye due to dryness. My life has dramatically changed as I am living with constant soreness and pain. Although the laser itself was a complete success in the fact I have 20 20 vision, I would rather go back to wearing my glasses and feeling normal. My eye is the bane of my life, as I cannot forget about it. I suffered with this eye when I used to wear contact lenses, and I explained this at the time, but this is why most people opt for having surgery because of contact lens intolerance. I am constantly using expensive eye drops, drink lots of water, take eye vitamins, use eye gel at night, and live in hope ...  More...
