Lans, a Dutch professor in Ophthalmology laid down the basic principles of radial kerototomy in 1898. During 1930s, some ground-breaking work has been done on corneal incisions by Sato of Japan. However, it was only in the 1970s that Dr. Fyodorov brought about practical application of refractive surgery through radial keratotomy in the then Soviet Union.
In 1978, American ophthalmologists became interested in the findings of Dr. Fyodorov. After visiting him in the Soviet Union, Dr. Leo Bores brought the technology to the United States.
Laser Assisted Refractive Surgery
The Excimer laser was first used on biological tissue by Dr. Srinivasin at the IBM research laboratories, during early 1980s. The idea of using the laser to reshape the cornea was introduced by Dr Steven Trokel, an ophthalmologist working with Dr, Srinivasin.
The excimer laser, since its introduction in 1987 has a record of success internationally.Laser refractive surgery has been found to be the most effective with Myopia, Hyperopia and Astigmatism. The advancement of other laser eye surgery procedures came into being with the success of laser eye surgery
Lasers are precise instruments that can be used to reach tissues deep inside the eye without cutting or disturbing other parts of the eye. As the decades progressed, the eye surgery using laser has grown extremely sophisticated & popular.
With the ever improving new technologies, vision correction has become safer and more effective in comparison to past. The time taken to recover after undergoing the laser eye surgery is very short for most people and they experience little or no ill effects. The laser eye surgery is carried on an outpatient basis with the recovery time of a few hours to a few days.
