The first Ultralase clinic was opened in January 1991 at the Clatterbridge Hospital near Chester. At the time, all treatments performed were Photorefractive Keratotomy, or PRK, until the Lasik procedure was introduced in 1995.

With the introduction of Lasik, and the clear advantages it demonstrated for certain patients, Ultralase went through a period of dramatic growth through 2002.

2003 Ultralase introduced the revolutionary UltraPlus treatment with Wavefront technology, giving patients visual outcomes far surpassing those of standard laser treatments. Ultralase became the first provider to have all treatment outcomes verified by independent audit.

In March 2009, the commitment to clinical excellence led Ultralase to become the first UK provider to have all Great Britain surgeons certified in Laser Refractive Surgery by the Royal College of Ophthalmologists (RCOphth).

Ultralase Prices

Ultralase comes in second place in our list of the best laser eye surgery clinics in the UK for price, just after Optical Express. That’s because this clinic offers the full shebang: transparent prices, 0% finance options, free consultations, and competitive prices.

The cost of eye surgery at Ultralase ranges between £1,1695 and £2,995 (per eye), depending on the treatment type that you agree upon in discussion with a surgeon. These prices are in line with the average cost of eye surgery, but not quite as low as Optical Express.

Treatments Offered

You can count on Ultralase for the main laser eye and lens replacement surgery procedures. These include: LASIK and LASEK with Wavefront options, as well as refractive lens exchange (RLE), implantable contact lenses, and cataract surgery.

Is Ultralase Right for You?

With nearly 3,000 overall positive reviews from independent customers in the UK, Ultralase is one of the best-rated laser eye surgery clinics by patients. People value this clinic for its:

  • Friendly prices – Fixed and reasonable prices help you know what to expect.
  • Nationwide clinics – Ultralase has 20 clinics in the UK, including in London, Reading and St Albans.
  • Decent aftercare – Ultralase provides free aftercare – one check-up and drops for the first three months.

Despite glowing reviews, however, it’s worth reading the fine print if you do choose Ultralase. In 2015, BBC’s Watchdog exposed the problems countless laser eye surgery patients have experienced accessing their lifelong aftercare.

Most user reviews on Lasik Eyes show happy experiences, but then again most people never need to take advantage of their lifetime guarantee. If you would like to find out whether Ultralase is the top-rated laser eye surgery clinic near you, we’re here to help.

Had my Op on the 27th August which went really well. Personally did not feel any pain and thought the whole set up and procedure was done very Professionally. Initial irritable pain after about an hour, for about 2 hours. Would highly recommend going to sleep at this point as is a lot better after. No pain, discomfort or anything on the following day, which i spent reading every number plate and sign i could (Sad i know, but so will you. My post op on this day was proved to be succesfull as i had 6/6 (20/20) in my right and 5/6 (Better) in my left, extremely pleased (started out at -2.75 & -2.5). Would and will highly recommend Ultralase (Guildford) and Mr V Gupta to anyone as so far am without problem.

I first read about LASIK in 1994 and thought it would be a last resort for me should my eyes deteriorate, I tried other natural ways of maintaining my sight, non has given me the dramatic improvements to my sight that I now enjoy from the treatment I received at Ultralase. From the first contact everything has been carried out in a relaxed yet professional manner with client comfort being paramount.

I only started wearing glasses at 24 and could not get used to wearing contact lenses. I really wanted to have the surgery as I hated wearing glasses. I chose Ultralase as the consultation was carried very thorough and everything was explained to clearly and nothing was left out. There was no pressure and was left with me to call back and book a suitable date. I was so keen to have it done that I came with a date in mind. So I booked straight away.

I had my treatment carried out at the Hammersmith clinic. I've gone from -2 and an astigmatism to having 6/4 vision within 48 hours in both eyes so there's not much more I can say on that other than I CAN SEE. The staff were all friendly and professional and the nurses really reassured me as I was shaking like a leaf before treatment. The surgeon answered all my questions. Now having my aftercare in the Chelmsford clinic and the they are good as well. The main thing is obviously the results but having friendly and reassuring staff really made things better for me. They told me all about the procedure and this made me understand what was happening and not panic. Have already recommended them and a friend is due for treatment in Chelmsford next week . If anyone wants to email feel free.

I had bilateral LASIK treatment on the 21 December 2001 at Ultralase Hammersmith clinic, the surgeon was Mr Gupta. My eyes were -5.00 and -5.75 with a degree of astigmatism, the exact amount I cannot remember, I was 38 at the time of treatment. When I had my pre-op assessment my pupil size and corneal thicknesses were found to be OK as far as the LASIK procedure requires it to be (it would have been interesting to have been told just what the measurements were). I received no pushy sales pitch and the atmosphere was relaxed, almost casual. The emphasis was on "playing down" rather than "hyping up" my chances of having post-op perfect vision, but my questions were well dealt with and I was sent off with all the required information to consider in order to make up my own mind about my options. I decided to go ahead with the procedure partly on the basis that I could see that their track record with the Technolas 217c laser were good and that they had some very experienced staff. Come the big day I was extra lucky to get Mr Gupta how has amassed a very significant amount of experience as a refractive surgeon and latterly as a LASIK practitioner. I was not so much nervous as fascinated. The micro-surgery was hitch free, although the suction on the eye was uncomfortable-but necessary. The laser application only odd in that you can smell a slight burning smell! My flaps were floated back in place and there were no difficulties such as wrinkling or poor adhesion. I waited in reception for 30 minutes with my eyes shut before Mr Gupta had a look and pronounced that I would not need contact eye shielding. My sight was poor at this stage and very light sensitive, the fact that tears streamed down my fact was a good sign, if they didn't it would have been a bit odd! Next morning after a peaceful night I looked out of the window and I had at least 20/20 vision. That was confirmed at the next day follow-up at Ultralase. One week on the day time vision was getting better all the time although I did notice that I was a bit Long sighted and low light level acuity was poor, I also had halos around high pressure sodium street lights. All this was normal and would, with time, improve I was told. This was a correct prediction as my sight steadily improved as recorded at the one and the final 6 month post-op follow up consultations at Ultralase. I would say that almost one year on I have possibly 20/15 eye sight, but not "super vision" or 20/10-8 eye sight. Would I have had this level of visual acuity if I had been custom treated with moving Wavefront diagnosis? I can't say. However, I do think that a lot depends on the competency of the practitioner. No matter how good the laser is, in terms of its power of resolution and its active eye tracking system, if the stromal surface of the cornea to be ablated has been poorly prepared there will not be a good, and possibly a very poor result. Mr Gupta at Ultralase was perfectly competent so a good result was reasonably predictable. My only residual concerns are for the future, will my eyes be affected by as yet to be documented side effects due to the thinning of the cornea and will the flap maintain its adhesion and fully heal with time? No one can know at this stage. My view is that if you have good health, thick corneas and a competent surgeon using up to date technology and techniques the risk is acceptable.

Had my consultation today. Very friendly and answered all my questions. I have very thick corneas (560 microns) but have large pupils (7-7.5mm) and they told me that there is a good chance of night time problems. If anybody has had surgery with large pupils, please let me know your findings. I will not go ahead until I have researched this more. Thanks.

I had bi-lateral treatment at the Birmingham clinic on the 25th September, with the procedure being carried out by Ms Asiya Abedin. My prescription was -4.5 and -5.0 before treatment, with slight astigmatism in one eye. At my last follow-up check I could read the 6/6 line very clearly, and nearly all letters on the bottom (6/5) line so I'm pretty pleased with the results considering it's only just over two weeks after the op. The procedure was painless, although certain parts were a bit unconfortable - particularly the suction ring / eye clamp although this is only for a few seconds. My eyes did ache (not sore though) for a few hours afterwards but nothing a couple of Ibruprofen couldn't cure. The eye drops are no problem but the eye shields at night are a pain (although it's only for two weeks). Side-effects or things I've noticed since the op include what I think might be slight sensitivity to artificial light at some times (for example in a brightly lit office), and also more difficulty in distinguishing between things of a subtley different contrast (light and dark). Despite these points, I'm still extremely satisfied with the results. As far as Ultralase go I found them to be excellent, with very professional and friendly staff, and a high level of care for their patients. I would definitely recommend them (my wife's having her eyes done with them next!)

I attended the Leeds clinic to have 'my eyes done' 3 months ago, Dr Annoiner was delightful, my only wish is that I had them done sooner (+4.00 in both eyes) The staff at the clinic are nice too, and i never felt pressured to book treatment, they even gave me a consent form to read before I booked treatment!!

16 Sep 2002

Had my operation on the 12 September (4 days ago) at the Chelmsford clinic. I was -2.5 and -3, and now I'm 21/20 in both eyes, with only a mild discomfort in the right eye every now and then. I didn't expect the clamps to hurt as much as they did, but that was only for about 20 seconds each. Quite uncomfortable from about half an hour after the op until two/three hours later. Woke up in the morning to perfect vision. Everyone at Ultralase have been great, especially the really pretty consultant. The after care is a hassle with the night goggles, and drops I have to keep putting in, but its all worth it, to get rid of glasses and contacts.

Leeds Clinic - Treatment May 2001 I was very nervous about undergoing LASIK but reassured by talking to friends who had already been treated with good results. Leeds clinic was busy but very professional and I felt under no pressure to proceed. The process itself was, as promised, painless and the same evening I had great vision. The aftercare is a bit of a chore but doesn't last long. Now more than eighteen months on I still enjoy the fact that I never have to remember where my specs are!
