The first Ultralase clinic was opened in January 1991 at the Clatterbridge Hospital near Chester. At the time, all treatments performed were Photorefractive Keratotomy, or PRK, until the Lasik procedure was introduced in 1995.

With the introduction of Lasik, and the clear advantages it demonstrated for certain patients, Ultralase went through a period of dramatic growth through 2002.

2003 Ultralase introduced the revolutionary UltraPlus treatment with Wavefront technology, giving patients visual outcomes far surpassing those of standard laser treatments. Ultralase became the first provider to have all treatment outcomes verified by independent audit.

In March 2009, the commitment to clinical excellence led Ultralase to become the first UK provider to have all Great Britain surgeons certified in Laser Refractive Surgery by the Royal College of Ophthalmologists (RCOphth).

Ultralase Prices

Ultralase comes in second place in our list of the best laser eye surgery clinics in the UK for price, just after Optical Express. That’s because this clinic offers the full shebang: transparent prices, 0% finance options, free consultations, and competitive prices.

The cost of eye surgery at Ultralase ranges between £1,1695 and £2,995 (per eye), depending on the treatment type that you agree upon in discussion with a surgeon. These prices are in line with the average cost of eye surgery, but not quite as low as Optical Express.

Treatments Offered

You can count on Ultralase for the main laser eye and lens replacement surgery procedures. These include: LASIK and LASEK with Wavefront options, as well as refractive lens exchange (RLE), implantable contact lenses, and cataract surgery.

Is Ultralase Right for You?

With nearly 3,000 overall positive reviews from independent customers in the UK, Ultralase is one of the best-rated laser eye surgery clinics by patients. People value this clinic for its:

  • Friendly prices – Fixed and reasonable prices help you know what to expect.
  • Nationwide clinics – Ultralase has 20 clinics in the UK, including in London, Reading and St Albans.
  • Decent aftercare – Ultralase provides free aftercare – one check-up and drops for the first three months.

Despite glowing reviews, however, it’s worth reading the fine print if you do choose Ultralase. In 2015, BBC’s Watchdog exposed the problems countless laser eye surgery patients have experienced accessing their lifelong aftercare.

Most user reviews on Lasik Eyes show happy experiences, but then again most people never need to take advantage of their lifetime guarantee. If you would like to find out whether Ultralase is the top-rated laser eye surgery clinic near you, we’re here to help.

I had the surgery 3 days ago and have to say that I have been extremely please with Ultralase throughout the entire procedure. From the initial consultation, I felt that they were rigorous in their safety practices and this is true to the actual surgery and the after-care. The consultation was not 'salesy', was very thorough and I left thinking they had the best interests for my sight; rather than just trying to sell me a lesser product so that the surgery was within my budget. I mention this because I also went for an optical express consultation (I had heard they were cheaper) - but from the start the entire appointment made me feel that they were less caring, less rigorous in their practices, and worst of all - instead of trying to offer me the treatment I wanted at a reasonable cost; they tried to push me into having a lesser treatment (no wavefront, no intralase) to get the costs down. Although on the day of my surgery; the Tottenham court road laser broke and I had to be ferried to the Hammersmith surgery to have the treatment (it took a fair few hours in total) - I felt that the staff dealt well with it and while I was frustrated at the wait; their service levels did not slip. They paid for my taxis to Hammersmith and then back home; and the surgery itself was not too rushed despite the delays. The surgery itself was pretty intrusive as you'd imagine; but Sumith Perera the surgeon put me at ease and I felt was both experienced and very capable; whom I trusted entirely. In terms of after-care; I cant give a full opinion yet until I'm fully healed - but I would definitely recommend Ultralase & Sumith Perera.

I did not find this to be a hard sell - though they do insist on the Ultra Elite.. who's going to take second best when it's your eyes?? The staff are professional, but the run up to my actual surgery was a mess. I went from having 2 eyes done (Lasik), to oh no we can't do your right eye - except with Lasek.. to not being sure they could even do that. They changed the date and time of the appointment 4 times, and given I was coming over from Belgium this was a major stress. However, once I met Mr Gupta I was reassured and the surgery (on left eye only, as I didn't want to be rushed into Lasek when I wasn't sure about it for my correction) was a huge success. I am now considering Lasek at Christmas, if my left eye is still great after 6 months. Refund for the right eye that I had already paid for took ages and was a right mess, but I got it in the end, and all follow ups have been incredibly professional. No complaints once you are there, but the organisation and internal communication could be better!

Leeds Ultralase were very efficient and professional from my consultation to the procedure in Nov 10 and follow up checks at 24 hrs, 1 month and 6 months. My sight is now better than 20;20 having been short sighted since my 20`s ( I`m now 51), and I just now wear +1.50 reading glasses for close up work which I hadn't previously needed but was told that I would need after the treatment. I am extremely happy with the result, so much so that a friend has since had Lasek, and my husband is currently discussing dates for treatment with Ultralase -he has to go to the London clinic for his prescription. The procedure itself was quick and pain free (approx 12 mins), and the after effects were as described, stinging for a few hours and then dry and slightly uncomfortable for around 2 weeks, but the eye drops given help relieve and can be used when required.I am self employed and could take time out - I wouldn't have wanted to have been in an office environment in a/c and / or working on PC, as that would have made my eyes really uncomfortable in those first 2 weeks. Overall, a great result, and I am very happy I`ve had it done... I was offered an available time slot at short notice as I was able to be flexible and hence the greatly reduced price of £2000 from the £4850 quoted!

Awesome. Least 'sales-like' consultation and directed my to this site and another for independent reviews and discussion. Regular re-assurance that all would be ok. Answered all questions fully and promptly Surgery day - treated within 30 mins of arrival, on way home within 90 minutes! Next day follow up visit - better than 20:20 vision!!! Can't fault them!!

I attended for my free consultation and after all the measurements and assessments was informed I was suitable for laser eye surgery. My prescriptions are moderate, my cornea are thick enough etc. We discussed prices and dates. Phoned back 4 days later to be informed that the surgeon had reviewed my scans and my eyes are not suitable for ANY type of treatment. The girl who phoned me could not answer my questions and was not keen for me to speak to the surgeon as I requested. I spoke to the optometrist who had said I was suitable and had an explanation that wasn't entirely clear to the nature of the problem. Very disappointing to have my hopes raised and then dashed. Optical Express also said I was suitable now waiting for them to review my scans once more :(

Simply superb from strat to finish. Consultation was thorough and information without being sale'sy or pushy whatsoever. They explained the procedure, the aftercare, took pictures of my eyes and described what they would do, why they would do it, and what I should expect afterwards. I got information on the surgeon they recommended for me so I went home and Googled him, such impressive reviews! Overall its been 1 month now and today I had a follow up appointment, everything is going very well and my sight is better than when I wore my contact lenses (I was near 20/20 with my contact lenses, and now I am better than 20/20!). I was at the Hammersmith branch, the reception staff, optometrists, personal advisor's, nurses and everyone there are superbly presented and approachable. I would have no hesitation picking up the phone to discuss any queries with any of them. The aftercare has been thorough, I followed through all instructions to the T - which of course you must! I suffered dry eye as expected but it was particularly in the mornings and evenings, but it was explained that it may well go away once I stop my 9days of prescription eye drops, which it has done. I'm delighted with my results, and happy I didn't go for anywhere cheaper. I'm disappointed to read that a few people haven't had such a great experience at other branches. I can only speak from my experience at Hammersmith which has been nothing short of brilliant...I do hope if there are any problems with certain staff members at other branches that they brush up because Ultralase have been brilliant with me. I can seeeeeeeee everything!! :-)

Had a consultation a couple of weeks ago, i was quoted £3,900 vERY HARD SELL, Sarah was the market person. We were told one price suits all, When asked if there was any discount at all,we were told no. One week later i received a call offering £1,000 discount. i still hadn't decided. Today i received a call fro Sarah, who displayed a very amateurish poor, telephone manner. she offered hung up abruptly when i told her that i had agreed for the procedure to be carried out by Optical Express, she said she would price match....so much for the one price suits all treatments. i didn't and don't believe a word that girl says. i will inform all of my friends of this shoddy treatment i received, thank goodness i didn't decide to have the procedure with you Ultralase

I'm so glad I went with Ultralase, for 2 main reasons. 1. I have heard stories from my friends who went with Optimax and the surgeon sold them a higher product on the day of surgery "recommending" it to them while they were in a very heightened emotional state. 2. I had complications in that my right eye didn't take too well and I had to have a re-treat a year later. (This was my body trying to heal itself to it's prior state of being, not through any fault of Ultralase) Throughout the whole year and a half all the staff have been amazing, offering me additional appointments to comfort me (because I was a bit worried!) supplying me with replacement glasses until the re-treat, supplying me with loads of costly eye drops. They have bent over backwards to ensure I receive the best treatment. I'm now 3 months post the re-treat and I'm still really happy. They may cost a bit more than the high-street options, but well worth it if yours isn't a straight-forward case.
