The first Ultralase clinic was opened in January 1991 at the Clatterbridge Hospital near Chester. At the time, all treatments performed were Photorefractive Keratotomy, or PRK, until the Lasik procedure was introduced in 1995.

With the introduction of Lasik, and the clear advantages it demonstrated for certain patients, Ultralase went through a period of dramatic growth through 2002.

2003 Ultralase introduced the revolutionary UltraPlus treatment with Wavefront technology, giving patients visual outcomes far surpassing those of standard laser treatments. Ultralase became the first provider to have all treatment outcomes verified by independent audit.

In March 2009, the commitment to clinical excellence led Ultralase to become the first UK provider to have all Great Britain surgeons certified in Laser Refractive Surgery by the Royal College of Ophthalmologists (RCOphth).

Ultralase Prices

Ultralase comes in second place in our list of the best laser eye surgery clinics in the UK for price, just after Optical Express. That’s because this clinic offers the full shebang: transparent prices, 0% finance options, free consultations, and competitive prices.

The cost of eye surgery at Ultralase ranges between £1,1695 and £2,995 (per eye), depending on the treatment type that you agree upon in discussion with a surgeon. These prices are in line with the average cost of eye surgery, but not quite as low as Optical Express.

Treatments Offered

You can count on Ultralase for the main laser eye and lens replacement surgery procedures. These include: LASIK and LASEK with Wavefront options, as well as refractive lens exchange (RLE), implantable contact lenses, and cataract surgery.

Is Ultralase Right for You?

With nearly 3,000 overall positive reviews from independent customers in the UK, Ultralase is one of the best-rated laser eye surgery clinics by patients. People value this clinic for its:

  • Friendly prices – Fixed and reasonable prices help you know what to expect.
  • Nationwide clinics – Ultralase has 20 clinics in the UK, including in London, Reading and St Albans.
  • Decent aftercare – Ultralase provides free aftercare – one check-up and drops for the first three months.

Despite glowing reviews, however, it’s worth reading the fine print if you do choose Ultralase. In 2015, BBC’s Watchdog exposed the problems countless laser eye surgery patients have experienced accessing their lifelong aftercare.

Most user reviews on Lasik Eyes show happy experiences, but then again most people never need to take advantage of their lifetime guarantee. If you would like to find out whether Ultralase is the top-rated laser eye surgery clinic near you, we’re here to help.

Still, Ultralase features in several of Lasik Eyes’ lists of top-rated eye surgery:

I had treatment 3 weeks ago and I bitterly regret it. I can't complain about the treatment day and how I was looked after although after I was told they do about 14 a day in Guildford I felt that I was on a conveyor belt. I couldn't open my eyes for about 6 hours but that was expected, no complaint there. What I really regret is because I have problems with both long and short vision I was told they could not fix both problems. But I could have one eye done for long and one for short. This sounded bizarre to me and made that comment, so without further consultation the consultant ruled it out. I opted for both eyes to have my long vision corrected. I was told that I would still need reading glasses and decided if it was just for reading that it would be worth while. "Reading Glasses", my view on this was I would need glasses to read only, just like my wife. In reality I need them for everything within 6 feet. From eating a meal to using a monitor to seeing the dash board of my car. Everything with in my operational environment. As soon as I look up and out of this environment I have to take the glasses off. So I now have to carry a pair of specs with me wherever I go. If this had been explained to me in full I wouldn't have had the treatment. I kick myself that I didn't investigate further and ask more questions. Looks like I've spent £4,700 only to have to revert back to vari-focal glasses, reading at the bottom, clear at the top. I now have headaches most days and every morning my eyes water for about an hour, I'm hoping this will go in time. It could have been explained better, the one eye long vision and one eye close vision option was dismissed very quickly just because I voiced that it sounded odd. This should been explored more. They could have suggested contact lenses like this to see how I got on but they didn't. I know they are a business and need to have volume customers, but they should put a bit longer in between consultation and treatment to give people a little longer to consider the options. Nice people though ! My final comment, if you have both long and short distance problems think very hard if treatment is for you.**ULTRALASE RESPONSE** “After reading Mr Byrne’s comments, we felt it was vital to monitor the situation and are working to help this patient further.”

Had my consultation at Exeter and my treatment at the Bristol Clinic 2 weeks later. What can I say? Outstanding from start to finish. Incredibly professional, accurate, helpful, etc. I was quite nervous about the actual procedure (or more the risk of infection afterwards etc) but was put at ease by the team, and it was totally effortless. Was 20/20 the next day, and better than 20/20 within a few days. Now have near perfect vision, it's better than it has ever been, even before I started to wear glasses or when I was wearing 'spot on' contacts - the night vision is the most amazing improvement. My aftercare specialist was extremely pleased (they recommended Ultralase to me as well), and the Optomitrist was so impressed with the outcome and how 'clean' the heal was etc, he was almost lost for words and said it's pushed him to get it down now also. I can 100% recommend treatment with Ultralase. My life is so much simpler now, and each day I find myself going WOW whilst looking 2 miles across the land and seeing what colour curtains the cottage has - it's freaky! I used this site to help inform my decision, so thought it only fair to place a review to future readers. Go for it!

I decided that I wanted to look into laser eye surgey after finally having enough of my contact lenses. They wee becoming irritable to wear and glasses just wern't a full time option for me. As I researched I came across Ultralase and due to their popularity and location of their clinics decided to go for my consulation there. In hindsight I wish I had researched around more. The staff at Chester were really friendly and made me feel confident in my decision. Although I was initially put off my the price tag I decided to go ahead as I knew it would be worth it in the long run. I had my treatment at the Liverpool clinic as they only do surgery on crtain days at certain clinics. Unfortunately the treatment on my left eye did not go according to plan. The laser is supposed to cut a flap which is then lifted, however with my left eye this was not done correctly and my surgeon had to manually use a blade. Without trying to scare people I have to admit I was absolutely petrified and devasted that something had gone wrong. Although the surgeon remained calm I couldn't and I do wish someone had expained to me at the time what had gone wrong (it was only on my 3rd check up back at Chester that someone actually informed me). I had to have a bandage lens on my left eye to help it heal. I could tell straight after treatment that my right eye was going to be perfect. Unfortunately at this time the fact that I couldn't even open my left eye overshadowed this. When I got home, and the anaesthetic drops had worn off, I was in immense pain. The next morning I woke up to look in the mirror and discover it looked like I had been butchered. One thing I wish the clinics did advise is actually how much the aftercare affects you. I don't feel this was fully explained and I wasn't ready to dedicate the time that needed for this. For me it was a longhealing process but I am pleased to say that now, 2 months on, I have perfect vision. I am absolutely amazed with the results and do not regret my surgery one bit. This review is not meant to scare anyone considering surgery, only to provide a realistic view of what can happen. It's very easy to get carried away with the perfect sugar-coated reviews, I only wish I had the opportunity to read a reveiw like this first. My final point would be that anyone considering laser eye surgery should go for it. I would recommend Ultralase and I would definately go through what I have again to be able to see like I can now.

I can thoroughly recommend having treatment done. It sounds cheesy but it is life changing! I have a demanding career physically and having near perfect vision has freed up that side of my life. The service throughout has also been excellent. Many thanks!

Having required glasses since i was 3 years old, the treatment has been a life changing experience for me. Contact lenses gave a welcome break from wearing glasses, but nothing can compare to this. My vision is actually better than it was when i wore my glasses or lenses. Thank you!

I would have liked to have my eyes done when i was 59. When my husband and daughter had theres done, but at that time they couldn’t do anything for me. They kept me in their files and contacted me six years later to say they had advanced with that their technology and if i would like to be tested again. So i was given intralense when i was 65 and im so happy i was eventually treatable. They redid my left eye and again it made me feel much better. I would recommend ultralase to anyone and i do. I wouldn’t trust anyone else with my eyes.
