The first Ultralase clinic was opened in January 1991 at the Clatterbridge Hospital near Chester. At the time, all treatments performed were Photorefractive Keratotomy, or PRK, until the Lasik procedure was introduced in 1995.

With the introduction of Lasik, and the clear advantages it demonstrated for certain patients, Ultralase went through a period of dramatic growth through 2002.

2003 Ultralase introduced the revolutionary UltraPlus treatment with Wavefront technology, giving patients visual outcomes far surpassing those of standard laser treatments. Ultralase became the first provider to have all treatment outcomes verified by independent audit.

In March 2009, the commitment to clinical excellence led Ultralase to become the first UK provider to have all Great Britain surgeons certified in Laser Refractive Surgery by the Royal College of Ophthalmologists (RCOphth).

Ultralase Prices

Ultralase comes in second place in our list of the best laser eye surgery clinics in the UK for price, just after Optical Express. That’s because this clinic offers the full shebang: transparent prices, 0% finance options, free consultations, and competitive prices.

The cost of eye surgery at Ultralase ranges between £1,1695 and £2,995 (per eye), depending on the treatment type that you agree upon in discussion with a surgeon. These prices are in line with the average cost of eye surgery, but not quite as low as Optical Express.

Treatments Offered

You can count on Ultralase for the main laser eye and lens replacement surgery procedures. These include: LASIK and LASEK with Wavefront options, as well as refractive lens exchange (RLE), implantable contact lenses, and cataract surgery.

Is Ultralase Right for You?

With nearly 3,000 overall positive reviews from independent customers in the UK, Ultralase is one of the best-rated laser eye surgery clinics by patients. People value this clinic for its:

  • Friendly prices – Fixed and reasonable prices help you know what to expect.
  • Nationwide clinics – Ultralase has 20 clinics in the UK, including in London, Reading and St Albans.
  • Decent aftercare – Ultralase provides free aftercare – one check-up and drops for the first three months.

Despite glowing reviews, however, it’s worth reading the fine print if you do choose Ultralase. In 2015, BBC’s Watchdog exposed the problems countless laser eye surgery patients have experienced accessing their lifelong aftercare.

Most user reviews on Lasik Eyes show happy experiences, but then again most people never need to take advantage of their lifetime guarantee. If you would like to find out whether Ultralase is the top-rated laser eye surgery clinic near you, we’re here to help.

Has anyone had Lasik at the Manchester Clinic. If so I would like to hear from you. Thanks Viv

I had my eye treatment in the Leeds clinic at Easter and I thought that it was wonderful at first. I was recommending this treatment to other people because my sight was wonderful at first. I know that there is a period of settling down with the eyes and I don't know if my eyes have settled yet. I have had various appointments for check-ups, all with different people, which isn't nice, I don't know there names as I only get an appointment card with a time on it. I don't know whether these follow-ups are performed by opticians as non of this has been explained to me. My sight is deteriorating and they are keeping an eye on this, but every time I go to an appointment I am told something different. At the one before last I was told that I would have to have some tests and to make an appointment which would last more than an hour. This was fine but I had to find a babysitter as children won't sit still that long and I live about half an hour away from the clinic. When I arrived I waited to see the 'person', when I finally got in to the consultation room a very abrupt young man looked at my eyes, didn't mentiong the testing that I was supposed to be there for and told me to use artificial tears for a while because this could be causing the pobblem. I left after ten minutes and was told to make another appointment in a couple of months, which I am just about to do. I feel that I just don't know what is going on with my eyes. I have no information as to whom I have seen. At first I felt wonderful about my eyes but now I just don't know if I am being given the run around to keep me quiet. To make another appointment and then to come out not knowing what is going on is very frustrating, I just wonder how long this is going to go on for. I hope that I get sorted out as soon as possible. I will keep you posted.

I had my LASIK treatment with ULTRALASE in Chester on 22.12. and I'm more than pleased with the results. I researched for quite a while and expected at least some mild forms of side effects like glare or halo during the first few weeks - well, I did not experience any side effects whatsoever!! The day before the treatment I went onto lasikdisaster.com and got really really scared. But surgeon and staff are absolutely spot on, you couldn't wish for anything better - they are also a very cheerful bunch, which put my mind at rest that they wouldn't be "quacks". Surgery itself is not painful at all, but I was terrified when they "switch your lights off". Also to relax and at the same time "do not move while we apply the laser" was the hardest thing I ever had to do. But my "lifeline" was the frienly lady assistant's voice during every step of the surgery. So reassuring and she even praises you!! Well done Ultralase Chester and thanks for everything - I am still not getting over being able to see so well without any discomfort at all !

Having been for a consultation at another laser treatment provider a year ago and having being unimpressed with their service I was nervous about trying again. However, Ultralase have exceeded all of my expectations. Their customer service, care and personal service to 'you' as an individual is second to none. I would have no hesitation in recommending Ultralase to anyone. After 16 years of wearing glasses and being completely dependent on them from the moment I wake up to when i go to sleep, the level of sight I now have after treatment is beyond my wildest dreams. Thank you Ultralase for everything!

Extremely happy with my treatment. Everyone was friendly and helpful. The treatment is painless and quick and not having to wear glasses at all now is fantastic.

An excellent service and result. The staff were extremely helpful, friendly and professional. The procedure was exactly as they described it and painfree. The results were better than I'd hoped for.

I had LASEK at Ultralase Hammersmith on Nov 21 under the 'watchful eye' of Vinod Gupta. In summary - it was the best money I ever spent. There's no price on the gift of sight. Two small hiccups before the procedure involved a mix-up with the interest-free credit option and scheduling of the surgery. I was offered 24 mos. interest-free credit by the clinic which i accepted, but less than 24 hours before the operation Ultralase called for my previous address history (apparently this is how credit checks are done by the company they employ and not based on how much they earn or their credit rating with the bank) and I was refused because I didn't own a property - that despite the fact that I earn over 50k a year and have never been in debt in my life. What was most distressing was all this happened with less than 20 hours to go before the op. Then the next day, I was notified with six hours notice that my appointment was cancelled. I almost considered not going ahead with the op, given the mess to date. A customer services manager called me back, apologising and I was 100 off the cost of the procedure - very generous! Anyway went ahead with the op the following day (I had waited almost two years for my eyes to stabilise to get this damn thing done - I wasn't stopping now). Clinic staff were v. helpful. I wasn't expecting to see the scraping (surgeon uses an instrument similar to what a dentist uses to remove plaque) of the corneal cells - my prescription was -8 R and -7L. The anaesthetic drops numbed any feeling. The scraping took about 10 mins. The actual laser itself about 45 seconds intermittantly on each eye. I had trouble with my left eye to focus on the beam and was scared the eye wouldn't be corrected as good. Right after I could see pretty good - cloudy vision - thanks the the contact lense bandages. After 20 mins went home - but it was pretty uncomfortable to keep eyes open. Went home took a sleeping pill and woke up the next day. Vision was much better. Day 2, 3 and 4 with contact lenses in became more and more uncomfortable and vision more misty. Day 4 was unbearable and stayed in bed all day. Watching TV and reading was almost impossible. There was no pain - just discomfort from the lenses (I was used to wearing daily disposables 16 hours a day for 7 years so I could normally tolerate lenses). The biggest relief was getting the lenses out - it was like being able to breathe again. Right away vision was pretty good. Decided to go to work that way but was a big mistake. Vision became really bad later that afternoon and clinic told me this was normal. Once the lenses are out, the eyes start to heal on their own. Sleeping and resting them is the best thing. Waking up on Day 5 (first night without lenses) was already good - less cloudy and more sharp. I noticed every time I put the anti-inflam. drops in, the vision was perfect for 5 mins before the liquid was absorbed. This was the first indication I had what the vision would improve to. I could drive one week after the op, but night driving was tricky and bright lights hurt a bit. One week after contact lenses came out, I was 20:20 in both eyes on the sight test and improving! Reading was much more comfortable. Now three weeks later - vision is still not 100% sharp (told this will improve in weeks ahead), but pretty close. Light sensitivity is gone and it's very exciting to wake up at night and see the clock and my bedroom. After 17 years of glasses (I'm 27 now) I can see again!

16 Dec 2003

Just amazing. I can see everything so clearly. It has changed my life in so many ways. I researched for two years and know I made the right decision choosing Ultralase.

16 Dec 2003

Unbelievable! The freedom from glasses is great, to be able to wake-up in the night and to be able to read the clock without fumbling around is brilliant! .

16 Dec 2003

My expectations were managed very well and the surgery results exceeded those expectations. No pain, minimal discomfort and a bed side clock I can read! Every single Ultralase member of staff have been brilliant and I urge anyone to get the treatment.
