Mr Rodney Blumenfeld B.Optom, MBBCH, FCSOphth

An experienced Ophthalmic Surgeon, Mr. Blumenfeld has experience with some of the most advanced refractive lasers in the world including the VISX S4IR and has performed more than 4,000 procedures. He is registered with the General Medical Council (GMC) and is a fully trained Ophthalmologist who has undergone additional specialist training in refractive surgery.

He is a full time Ophthalmic Surgeon with Optical Express and is an active member of various affiliated bodies and societies such as South African Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons. Twice every year, Mr. Blumenfeld attends International Medical Advisory Board (IMAB) Conferences and is annually assessed by this board. The panel consists of several of the world's most eminent Refractive Surgeons including Mr. Steven Schallhorn, former Head of Ophthalmology for the US Navy, Professor Jan Venter, a world leading Ophthalmic Surgeon, and Mr. Jeffery Machat, co-founder of TLC Vision, one of the largest laser vision correction providers in the world.

Mr. Blumenfeld was born and educated in South Africa where he qualified as an Optometrist in 1989 and went on to study medicine at the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg. He graduated as a medical doctor in 1995 and during his training he won the coveted Monty Baranov medal for the best student in Ophthalmology. He proceeded to become Registrar in 1997 at Africa's largest eye hospital, the St John Eye Hospital in Johannesburg, during which time he completed five years of specialist ophthalmology training with emphasis on anterior segment surgery (oculoplastics, cataract, glaucoma surgery), as well as diabetic laser surgery.

Mr. Blumenfeld's UK ophthalmic experience includes; the Western Eye Hospital, Kent County Eye and Ear Hospital, Royal Victoria Infirmary and Stoke Mandeville Hospital in addition to an advanced LASIK course at Moorfields Eye Hospital. Mr. Blumenfeld regularly attends conferences and seminars about laser eye surgery and cataract surgery allowing him to stay abreast of all developments in the advancing field of Ophthalmology.

    Had my eyes treated via the Lasik AND Lasek method. Found him very curt, non-empathic and impatient the first time round (I was extremely nervous and beside myself with anxiety) but when I went back for LAsik, I told him how I'd felt the last time and he was MUCH better. His South-African accent can make him sound a little harsh. More...

    I had my Lasik surgery done last year at end of July. My Rodney has been very nice during the surgery and talk me through the process. Although after the surgery, I have suffered through a week of painful experience but the result came out rather great. Now I have visual sight of 1.5 (right eye) and 0.75 (left eye). More...

    I had surgery (Intralase, wavefront and lasek) on 25/08/08 with Rodney Blumenfeld. I was extremely nervous prior to and during the surgery but Rodney and his team put me at ease and talk me through everything they were doing.     Rodney and his team at Optical Express are marvellous. When Rodney asks if you have any questions you don't really because the pre-surgery consultants have already explained everything clearly. So you know exactly what to expect. In fact the whole procedure wasn't as uncomfortable as I thought it might be. Rodney explains everything he is doing and his confidence and personable manner make you feel as if you are in very safe hands. Which of course, with his credentials, you are! It's only been 4 days since my surgery and I already wish I'd had it done sooner. If you're considering having it done, stop considering and just do it.     I was extremely nervous prior to the surgery but was in safe hands and didn't feel a thing, absolutely nothing to worry about. Excellent surgeon. Have better than 20/20 vision now. Best money ever spent! More...
